The Lions have replaced the Western Force in the pre-season Super Rugby tri-series in Cape Town in January and February.

After a successful inaugural tournament, WP Rugby and Club Newlands will again host the event, which this time round will feature the Stormers, Sharks and Lions.

The tournament serves as a pre-season build-up for the Super Rugby season that kicks off on February 18.

The tri-series will take place from January 28 to February 5 and will see some of South Africa’s top players do battle.

Cape fans will get the chance to see some of the country’s top talent including Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana, John Smit, Pat Lambie, Elton Jantjies and Jano Vermaak.

This will also be the first opportunity for the Stormers’ players to face the team that defeated them in October’s Currie Cup final, when they take on their rivals from the Sharks.

Tri-series fixtures:
Friday, January 28: Stormers v Lions (19.00)
Tuesday, February 1: Lions v Sharks (19.00)
Saturday, February 5: Stormers v Sharks (17.00)

  • This tourney is just a warm-up..it’s all about getting combos going..would be nice to beat those two teams, but we must keep our intensity for super15 proper.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 1) : You laugh. If this player transfer continues, the Sharks and Lions will be merged in future super rugby tournaments to accommodate the Kings!!
