Transfer Windows

It is almost January and January marks the opening of the football transfer market! It always made me think that maybe they should bring transfer windows into rugby, wouldn’t that make life easier with all the sagas going on at the momemt.

Anyway I’m always interested to see which football player joins which club and as this is more of a rugby site and I’m more of a sports fan not just a rugby fan, I thought we could speak a little about the transfer structures in place with football and to share the transfer rumours that you have heard about.

It is always interesting to see how many millions those clubs spend to get a player to their club. And here we go on and say there is no loyalty in rugby. I think in football its no secret that there’s absolutely no loyalty seeing as that so many players play for clubs outside their home country.

Merry christmas to everyone and if your traveling please do so safely and get back home in one piece! May all your dreams come true in 2011!

Thanx to Ben for the insightful article.

  • Thing is we can all sit here n say the lions this n the lions yet but super rugby is a different kettle of fish..to go n beat the crusaders in christchurch or the waratahs is not a easy task..even managing a win at loftus or kings park can prove tricky..the lions need to make ellis park the fortress again..if u can’t win your home games I can’t see them beating the big boys overseas…

  • @grant10 (Comment 12) : Agree Grant, Lions going to be a formidable team if they get all those players. Remember Beast, Bekker and De Jongh all are still on the Lions shopping list. Even if they don’t get those players Lions I feel could be the surprise of the SA teams, they could top the log here next year. Lions could beat any of the SA teams on their day with the players and the gameplan they playing right now.

I for one hope that Beast stays with the Sharks, will be a sad day to see Beast moving away from Durbs. But that is the professional era and we will see more and more of this happening. Unions with the most money will have the strangle hold.

Slow your roll there, big dawg.

A team is built over time – not in an off-season of furious buying. Even if they make all those acquisitions, the Lions will still not have the class line-ups of ze Bulle, Stormers and Sharks.

And let’s not forget that this is any many ways a shot at redemption for Spencer and Mitchell – they were on the road to nowhere until getting a shot in Jozi.

Lions will be an annoyance, as usual next year, but I don’t see them finishing in the top 6. Maybe the top 8.

Yes agree, a team takes time to build and especially building with the youngsters. But Lions played well without the big names they are trying to recruit right now in the CC. Will have to see how they go in the S15, but I can tell you they not going to roll over for any team next year. Wont be surprised to see them beat the big 3 here, Bulls, Stormers and Sharks. We must not take them for granted next year.

  • @puma: would like jdj @the sharks also, but will he chase after money(lions) or a proven track record of success in superrugby and cc (bulls)?what is there to convince him to sign for sharks?(Seeing that money and or successful team seem to be the major criteria players look for)..
Jdj would def add heaps to the sharks..people often forget what one good signing can do for a team.his attacking and tackling skills will add plenty..
Sometimes one signing is all you need(in the sense of how that signing affects the team dynamics on the field)..a genuine threat with ball in hand in the backline, who also does more than his share on defence

Exactly what i predicted earlier this month and Richard was a bit astonished. The CC might well be in JHB next year, not just because of the calibre of players they are signing, but with the RWC next year, i think that a lot of the boks might get extended rests/conditioning. That would mean that WP, Bulls and Sharks will have the majority of their players on “leave” and that would give the Lions (or Cheetahs) the opportunity to get their hands on the CC. But that said, if they buy all these high profile players, then they would boast to contribute the majority of players to the Bok squad…..and then they have an excuse for not getting the CC after all

    Timely boost for Sharks

    Tags: new contracts, Sharks
The Sharks have announced that quite a few of their squad have extended their contracts with the union. This news comes at a good time as the build up to the semi final against the Blue Bulls intensifies.
This speaks volumes of the spirit in the camp especially as many of the players have had offers from other unions with reportedly quite lucrative payment attached to them. Particularly exciting is the contracts given to younger players who understandably would have had contracts offered to them from other unions and it is great to see the Sharks retaining these great players.
The contracted squad for 2011 onwards looks, as it stands, as follows:
    Props:
Tendai Mtawarira (new 3 year contract), Dale Chadwick (new contract), Wiehan Herbst (new contract), Julian Redelinghuys (new contract), Jannie du Plessis, Eugene van Staden
    ******************************************************************

I’m assuming that this is bollocks???
