Westville Old Boy Tian Meyer is currently training with the Sharks Super 15 squad, while the management team is understood to be working behind the scenes to thrash out a loan deal with his current employers, the Pumas.
Meyer, who played scrumhalf for the Sharks at every age group level before leaving to join the Pumas at the beginning of last year, enjoyed a pretty useful season for the Witbank side in the 2010 Currie Cup. In addition to regular appearances in the number 9 jersey, he showed his utility value in slotting in at flyhalf and even centre when required as well.
Should the negotiations prove successful, Meyer will play for the Sharks in the Super 15 only, before returning to the Pumas for the Currie Cup. He is contracted there until the end of next year. We’ll keep you posted on developments as they unfold.

eish
that is good news so we might just get him next year 4 the CC 2013
and give him a full contract with the Sharks from there onwards
Hi Rob. Any news on whether the Beast trained with the Sharks yesterday?
@Pokkel (Comment 2) : trying to find out
@robdylan (Comment 3) : while you there my friend when did i start on SW
This does not make much sense, unless the Sharks are going to try and get him permanently later, actually he would be more needed in the currie cup
@war1 (Comment 5) : morning
who are the studies going did well 2010 i hope
Weeeessssttttvvvviiiilllleeee!! This guy was brilliant back in school. I will never forget our backline one year. Tian Meyer, Chris Mickelwood and Waylon Murray doing post matric. Our backline was quite hot that year. What happened to Chris? In school he was one of the most feared flyhalf in the country, until they made him headboy and in matric he missed all his kicks. We used to call him Chris-Miss after.
@chaz (Comment 4) : start what?
@Mocho (Comment 7) : Didn’t he go play in Italy? I think he might have wondered down to SWD after that…
@robdylan (Comment 8) : when did i join SW last year
@robdylan (Comment 9) : no wait – thinking of someone else. I think he’s with Newcastle
@robdylan (Comment 9) : last I saw he featured 4 Boland or was it Border?
@Mocho (Comment 7) : he’s at boland, search for louis koen and in that article it shows the first division teams for that week. @Mocho (Comment 12) : apparently boland
@chaz (Comment 10) : you registered on 2009-09-26
@Mocho (Comment 12) : you’re right… Boland!
@robdylan (Comment 14) : ok thanks but i think i only started to comment on SW just before the 1st game in the S14
@chaz (Comment 16) : why is this important?
@robdylan (Comment 17) :
well it would be so nice to receive my 1st platuim star within a year of my BD on SW wouldn’t it
@chaz (Comment 18) : I think I just bit a hole straight through my tongue.
@robdylan (Comment 19) : eeeeeee
@chaz (Comment 20) : chaz – how can I put this delicately? The stars are meant to be a recognition of contribution to the discussion, rather than a goal…
They were never intended to encourage people to spam as many comments as they can in the shortest space of time.
@robdylan (Comment 21) :
no more nonsense talking
just a little bit … please… pretty please ….it’s off season
@rekinek (Comment 22) : everything is relative
@robdylan (Comment 21) :
i know but it looks so great next to the name and it’s good to get awarded for a the contribution to the discussion don’t you think
@rekinek (Comment 22) :
thanks
@robdylan (Comment 23) : and then i must get my cups
next one i must win
eish pulling ur leg my friend
it so much fun gee the holidays made it hard and so quite
@chaz (Comment 1) :
You seem to know him or of him quite a bit…? I have no idea what he is like Chaz, how did he do in the previous years?
@Ice (Comment 27) : i don’t now him i just heard he is very good from friends of mine so i’m in the same boat as you my friend and i don’t think that the sharks will contract a player if he is not all that good and he did play for the Sharks so 4 me its good if we can get him all together don’t u think
9) McLeod, Hoffman, we let Kockott go.
10) Lambie, Potgieter, Bosman
Enough backup all over the place.
Just how much of a bad influence was Kockott, that we would rather get Meyer back than use Kockott??????
@Ice (Comment 27) :
@Ice (Comment 27) : I can’t remember him at all
@KSA Shark © (Comment 29) : kockett doesn’t love us anymore so we must look some where else
@Pokkel (Comment 31) :
Me neither – I would first like to see him play before I make a comment though!
@Ice (Comment 33) :
well then we will c how he plays at the S15 just hope it worth all that loan money they will be offering the Pumas
Meyer is a fine player… he regularly stood out for the Pumas, against good opposition too. Reminds me a bit of a combination between McLeod and Sarel Pretorius
@robdylan (Comment 35) :
Oh – thanks
@Ice (Comment 36) : it’s a pleasure, skat
@Ice (Comment 33) : he played for pumas last year cc, at centre . but i can’t really say that i remember much of his game.
I like him at scrummie, similar to kockett…won’t be bad at outside if he can maybe gain a few kilos…he has the potential. Nice to have in the squad for backup though.
I watched him play as centre at the Pumas against the Bulls and Lions, and he outshined both his opposition.
@Mocho (Comment 40) : I also thought about that, but he tells me the Sharks want to use him at scrumhalf
@robdylan (Comment 41) : weird , so we have mcleod, ross cronje , hoffman and now meyer … seems crowdy.
@rekinek (Comment 42) :
Crowdy?
@Big Fish (Comment 43) :
i did mean crowded but crowdy will also do
“Many people, like crowded but more of an observation, adjective.
On christmas eve, while shopping the stores were very, very busy. I exclaimed “Wow is sure is crowdy today!” – from urban dictionary
Meyer was a good signing seen as tho kockett has left and both he and hoffman can cover other backline positions. He played well for us when he was here and was one of pumas better players. He will be ahead of Cronje in the pecking order
Sounds like a good signing..wonder if the sharks are looking at any other former u21s to invite to the training group?
Interesting that Meyer is seemingly rated ahead of Cronje… the latter is training with the Vodacom Cup squad.
@bergshark (Comment 46) : we’ve heard that Wynand Pienaar might be in the mix.
@rekinek (Comment 44) :
Backing your language usage with the Urban Dictionary is like justifying your legal argument by referencing a journalist.
@robdylan (Comment 47) : correct me if im wrong but cronje hasn’t even played currie cup yet whereas Meyer has shone (relatively speaking) for an understrength team so I don’t see it as much of a surprise he’s rated higher, although I don’t know wat the long term plans for both are
@RuckingFun (Comment 50) : and yet Cronje has a senior contract whereas Meyer was released to the Pumas
Meyer was surplus to requirements with ruan and kocket and mcleod all ahead of him prob dat why he was released. Not to sure bout Cronjes situation and da plans for him
Maybe the sharks management are trying their utmost to refute the malicious rumours spread by jealous and narrow-minded critics of the sharks success the past 20 years,by pointing @the cronje twins and saying:look,we have quality players in kzn schools”..but then again,tian meyer was a local boytjie..(Born?primary school?or scholarship?)
@bergshark (Comment 53) : unfortunately they don’t seem to give a damn about that. If that was the case they would they would have held onto barrit, murray, rhodes, cilliers, etc and actually take a look at our youngsters instead of going straight to the free state. Once in a while one does seep through the cracks (lambie) so lets hope the sharks actually take care of him. The outsiders who have played for the sharks have contributed greatly to make us what we are, no denying that. Would just be awesome if there were actually more natal boys in the team. rant over
@robdylan (Comment 48) :
@Big Fish (Comment 49) : appropriate language for approriate forum. it’s a social site plus as already mentioned offseason
you may think that your example is funny i actually came across sth like that in practice
@rekinek (Comment 56) :
Journalists are the most over-rated professionals ever.
@Big Fish (Comment 57) :i guess if all the principles that the journalists are taught were implemented they would be the most honourable profession. but same can probably be said about most professions.
@rekinek (Comment 58) :
Its not even about the ethics. Its about the biased reporting and the pretend knowledge on subjects they are commenting on.
They are treated and portrayed as sharing gospel truth and understanding their subject-matter, but that is seldom true.
