I know it seems like we’ve waited an eternity already, but this infernal waste of space in the rugby calendar that goes by the name of the “off season” will soon be a thing of the past! No longer will we be forced to be content with inferior sports such as football or (shudder) cricket when the Sharks take the field once more!
While both the Super Rugby and Vodacom Cup squads are now fully back in training, with the big-name additions to the former (Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Conrad Hoffman and Meyer Bosman fitting in well), we will need to hang on until 1 February to see the Sharks take the field for the first time. This is the date of their Neo Africa Tri-Series game against the Lions, which kicks off at Newlands Stadium at 19h00 on that Tuesday evening. This will be followed by another big derby game when the Sharks take on the newly-renamed DHL Stormers at 17h00 on Saturday 5 February. Those of you lucky enough to be in the Mother City can start looking out for tickets for those games at Computicket from 17 January on.
We’re hoping that the games will be streamed on the internet in some way, much as they were last year – or at the very least be on TV.
The first Super Rugby game for the Sharks is, of course, two weeks after that as they take on the Cheetahs at Kings Park on Saturday 19 February, starting at 17h05. You can check out all the Super Rugby fixture for 2011 here.
The Sharks XV will need to wait a little longer for their taste of action, with their opening game in the 2011 Vodacom Cup – a tough away match against Griquas – scheduled for 2 March. We mustn’t forget that we now also have a team in the expanded Varsity Cup B Section (known as the Varsity Shield), with UKZN playing their first match, away against UWC, in Tygerberg on 31 January. Anyone heading down to the Cape to catch the Neo Africa Tri-Series game the following day could easily add in the UKZN match as a curtain raiser.Tweet
