26 days to go

I know it seems like we’ve waited an eternity already, but this infernal waste of space in the rugby calendar that goes by the name of the “off season” will soon be a thing of the past! No longer will we be forced to be content with inferior sports such as football or (shudder) cricket when the Sharks take the field once more!

While both the Super Rugby and Vodacom Cup squads are now fully back in training, with the big-name additions to the former (Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Conrad Hoffman and Meyer Bosman fitting in well), we will need to hang on until 1 February to see the Sharks take the field for the first time. This is the date of their Neo Africa Tri-Series game against the Lions, which kicks off at Newlands Stadium at 19h00 on that Tuesday evening. This will be followed by another big derby game when the Sharks take on the newly-renamed DHL Stormers at 17h00 on Saturday 5 February. Those of you lucky enough to be in the Mother City can start looking out for tickets for those games at Computicket from 17 January on.

We’re hoping that the games will be streamed on the internet in some way, much as they were last year – or at the very least be on TV.

The first Super Rugby game for the Sharks is, of course, two weeks after that as they take on the Cheetahs at Kings Park on Saturday 19 February, starting at 17h05. You can check out all the Super Rugby fixture for 2011 here.

The Sharks XV will need to wait a little longer for their taste of action, with their opening game in the 2011 Vodacom Cup – a tough away match against Griquas – scheduled for 2 March. We mustn’t forget that we now also have a team in the expanded Varsity Cup B Section (known as the Varsity Shield), with UKZN playing their first match, away against UWC, in Tygerberg on 31 January. Anyone heading down to the Cape to catch the Neo Africa Tri-Series game the following day could easily add in the UKZN match as a curtain raiser.

  • Interested to see how the Super 15 format pans out for the SA teams. We seem to have got over the travel thing, but does this mean more derbies and we love climbing into each other a lot more that we do to the Kiwis or the Aussies strange phenomenon, surley we would rather kill them than each other?? BUT NOOOOOO not South African’[email protected]robdylan (Comment 3) : You dont have to worry about that never going to happen  Hope you can do better than last year we only have to win one game to improve so not that much pressure, HA-HA

  • @Whindy (Comment 6) : I think it’s due to the rivalry between the SA teams in the CC. None of the teams are willing to give the other an inch. But yes, a pity they don’t always show the same determination against the Aussies and Nzl teams.

The Super Rugby tournament will consist of 15 teams spread across three conferences as follows:

    South African conference
    Australian Conference
    New Zealand conference
    Bulls
    Bumbies
    Blues
    Cheetahs

    Hurricanes
Each team will play a total of 16 regular season matches, eight home and eight away. Each team will play all four of the other teams in their conference twice, both home and away, and play against four of the five teams in each of the other two conferences
    Internal Conference Matches – a team will play each of the four other teams in its conference on two occasions meaning a total of eight Internal Conference Matches. With one match against each team played at a home venue and one match played at an away venue this will result in four home matches and four away matches;
Cross Conference Matches – a team will play four of the five teams from each of the other conferences on one occasion meaning a total of eight Cross Conference Matches. In playing the four teams from each of the other conferences, two of those matches will be played at a home venue and two matches will be played at away venues for a total of four home and four away. These six teams in the extended playoffs will be made up of the Conference winners and the three next teams (Wildcard Teams) with the highest total number of points. Each Conference will have one winner and therefore Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will each be guaranteed to have one team participating in the finals.Playoff schedule:

  • Might not be over yet but I hope it isIn the Lions camp, president Kevin de Klerk said yesterday that they had not given up on attempts to lure Bok prop Tendai Mtawarira to the union despite reports from Durban yesterday quoting Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl saying they had a valid contract with the player and that he would represent the Sharks in the Super Rugby series. Mtawarira signed a three-year contract extension with the Sharks late last year, but later signed a lucrative deal with the Lions after being approached by the union’s big-spending equity partner, Robert Gumede.

De Klerk revealed that they had based their moves to acquire the player on the fact that he does not have a “complete contract” with the Sharks. He said the technicality in his contract was similar to that which allowed Bok loose-forward Willem Alberts and fullback Louis Ludik to escape from their contracts with the Lions last year.

“We have not yet seen the counter-offer the Sharks made Beast (Mtawarira),” said De Klerk.

“But from our perspective, this matter is not over. Things could change in the next few days. That said, I guarantee that if the player had a valid contract with the Sharks we would not have negotiated with him because we believe in doing things the right way. But it is also important to state that Beast should decide where he wants to play. This is not about the union, it is mainly about the player.”

De Klerk also said he had no knowledge of the Sharks having brought an official complaint against his union for trying to acquire Mtawarira’s services.

  • Well I know this is a bit early and a bit of the topic but this I think will be (or hope)the starting line up for the Mighty Sharks.

    15:Louis Ludik
    14:Odwa Ndgunane
    13:Stefan Terblance
    12:Jacques Louis Potgieter
    11:Lwazi Mvovo
    10:Pat Lambie
    9 :Charl Mcleod
    8 :Ryan Kankwoski
    7 :Willem Alberts
    6 :Keegan Daniels
    5 :Steven Sykes
    4 :Alistair Hargreaves
    3 :Beast
    2 :Bismarck Du Plessis
    1 :Jannie Du Plessis

    My bench would be:

    16:John Smith
    17:Eugene Van Staden
    18:Ross Skeate/Gerhard Mostert
    19:Jean Deysel/Jacques Botes
    20:Meyer Bosman
    21:Jp Petersen
    22:Conrad Hoffman

Well that would be my dream team. Any suggestions?

  • Who cares about all of this when you can’t watch the f&*%^$g rugby

Rugbyzone has closed down so I don’t know how the hell I am going to watch the games that I want to. Every bloody Friday and Saturday is going to be an endless search on the net for a decent stream, which is nigh on impossible to find these days and mostly gets shut down after a while.

Why is there no decent quality online rugby available to people willing to pay for it?

Media rights owners (especially SKY) are evil MOFOS, because they buy the rights and then only show a third of the games, if that much. The IRB should make a law that non-televised games be made available on a non geo-blocked basis for anyone to purchase online or passed on to a free-to-air satellite broadcaster, such as the BBC, ITV or some such.

The current state of affairs is why rugby will never grow into a world sport. I’m so pissed off it hurts

It’s pathetic having 7 Sky Sports channels plus a Red button option and having to watch soccer, bowls, cricket, darts or WWE re-runs instead of a top-of-the-table Super rugby clash. THAT gets one frothing at the mouth.

I fail to see why Supersport can’t broadcast an online version of Supersport in HQ for SA passport holders in other countries. I, and I’m sure most other expats, would gladly pay for such a service.

How, for example, am I as Saffer in Germany affecting any media rights if I watch a game played in New Zealand???

  • But seriously Rob. We need to organise something ASAP. If just 20 of us expats contribute €10/month we could set up a nice Supersport sopcast and watch all rugby in good quality.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 150) : now that I think about it, though, UAE wouldn’t work, cos of all the bs censorship and filtering they do on the internet there. KSA would be worse

  • @Pokkel (Comment 143) :
Last year they showed the last game, – Stormers vs Sharks but didnt show the other games (involving the Force). Maybe with the Lions there it may be different.

Anyway not too much should be read into these games as there is a lot of experimenting and there will be plenty of holding back before the competition proper starts.

  • @robdylan (Comment 152) : I have no idea exactly how it works, but there are many people doing it so for someone a little techwise it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge.

I assume the basic logic is: Connection from satellite receiver to pc – sopcast software and media player on pc – streamed to website via broadband.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 155) : yes – but the server software doesn’t seem to be that easy to come by… you need to buy it off some dodgy oke in China by sending him an email. That would scare me…

Yes, I’ve seen those, but there are others that seem more pukka, such as Sopcast mentioned in my previous post.

Yeah, you just need to pray it works when you want it!
Have had endless problems with sopcast reliability.

Maybe less super rugby will make me a better golfer?

  • @robdylan (Comment 162) : Aha! I didn’t know a central server (dodgy dude in china’s) was necessary.

OK, I’m still searching then. There should be a simple solution that will allow someone to set up a live stream to their own website from a satellite receiver via laptop.

  • I have a brother and a cousin who’s really good with computers, I’m sure if we figure out a way to get the funding available to them to setup a live stream like this, they would be willing and able to do it for us.

  • @robdylan (Comment 170) : Of course.

I personally don’t endorse illegal tactics either but we didn’t make the bed. If the IRB provided a legal means for every rugby lover on the planet to watch the game I would opt for that without thinking twice.
