For those of you who don’t know, I had the pleasure and honor of attending Steven Sykes’ wedding on Friday night. Thanks must go to Rob and Steven’s agent Anthony for arranging this wonderful opportunity.
The wedding reception was held at the beautiful Caledon Boutique Hotel in Ballito, and what an evening they got! I was the first to arrive to champagne and canapé’s out on the deck whilst watching the sun go down. It was a great evening, and to put this in perspective, it had been raining every other day that week.
The first of the stars to arrive was Stefan Terblanche, who was also MC for the night, and what a friendly and approachable guy. The rest of the big names there were John Smit, JP Pietersen, Jean Deysel, Gerhard Mostert, Willem Alberts, Adi Jacobs, Keegan Daniel, Ryan Kankowski, Alistair Hargreaves, Skipper Badenhorst, John Plumtree and Grant Bashford.
I did not attend the church ceremony, but was told that Willem Alberts was one of Steven’s groomsmen. Skipper Badenhorst was also down to be up there next to the big man, but this did not happen. Skipper did give a very nice speech before dinner.
As we settled into our seats, which I might add I had a very good one indeed, Stefan informed us that the couple had arrived and what a sight it was seeing the newlywed Steven and Velene Sykes entering the room. Velene looked absolutely amazing and as for Steven, he cleans up nicely for a tight forward.
Soon after their arrival, starters were served. A creative take on quiche Loraine was served with a rocket salad, and it must be said that it did not touch sides. During the starters, the couple went to every table to have a photo taken, and this my first opportunity to introduce myself to the couple. Steven was heluva nice for a groom at his own wedding, asking me if everything was to my liking. I also got to meet Anthony, Steven’s agent, who is a really nice guy and made me feel completely at home.
The buffet dinner was up next, with a variety of choices to suit anybody! There was chicken & mushroom pie, red wine & rosemary leg of lamb, roasted potatoes, pumpkin fritters (or as they were known on the night – pampoenkoekies) and some seasonal vegetables. In my attempt to write a proper report I had to taste all the foods available! The food was really good!
As is customary at any wedding, there were speeches, and quite a few of them. Stefan Terblanche’s Supersport commentary gig stood him in good stead as he MC’d like a master, being the funny in between man. Velene got us started with a tear jerking thank you to her parents. As mentioned above, Skipper Badenhorst also had a few words. The most interesting speech was that of Steven himself, who ordered all the young men to move their seats up close to the podium, where they chirped and yelled and threw him various objects as he tried in vain to deliver his speech. They all ended the speech with a shot of tequila!
My moment of the evening was while standing at the bar waiting for a glass of Luyt Lager, when Steven came up to me and we spoke for around 15 minutes (this on his wedding night!?!). After an insightful chat with the man of the moment, I was duly introduced to Gerhard Mostert. And so it went for the rest of the evening, chatting to a handful of other players including Jean Deysel and Willem Alberts.
The desert menu looked great with Peppermint Crisp tartlets, Malva pudding and Chocolate Wedding cake as options. After a few beers, the last thing I felt like was something sweet, but I would have regretted it had I not tried the Peppermint Crisp pudding, which was awesome!
After the bouquet was thrown and the garter retrieved (very delicately and efficiently with his hands tied behind his back) the lights dimmed and the DJ started pumping the music. The DJ gladly played the Afrikaans classics like Kaptein and Babychocklits, making for some entertaining dancing going down!
To end, I have to compliment the Caledon Hotel staff for arranging a beautiful venue and for their fantastic service throughout the event. It was a great evening that was organized by a professional outfit. Thanks again to Steven and Velene for allowing me to share their special evening with them.Tweet
