Have any of you hear about the 102kg outside centre that’s been spotted training with the Sharks?
Bet that got your interest, didn’t it? Well, I’m afraid to say it’s not actually anybody new who’s joined the squad, although there was a media report late last year indicating that the Sharks are still looking for some more depth in that position. No, this is a bit of news that has almost slipped by – Stefan Terblanche has, according to John Plumtree, gained 6 kgs during the off-season.
When I read that at first, I wasn’t all that worked up about it. I mean, it’s great that Stef has added some muscle, but so what? Then I went and did the maths and realised that if a player who already weighs 95 or 96, puts on that much extra bulk, he all of a sudden turns into a bit of a monster! While it admittedly doesn’t quite put him into the Sonny Bill Williams or Ma’a Nonu category, a 100kg+ Terblanche does start to look far more evenly matched against more moderately-sized outside centres like Jaque Fourie, Waylon Murray, Stirling Mortlock and so on.
What is, though, possibly even more encouraging, is the fact that far from winding down as his retirement looms, the 36-year-old Terblanche is quite clearly motivated as all hell for this season and appears determined to force the coaches to pick him regularly at 13. While he may have lost the out-and-out pace needed to really excel in the outside backs, Stef has always been explosive and his good hands, fair turn of pace and now the bulk to punch through tackles should make him an incredibly handy option in the midfield.
Good to have you with us, Stef… let’s keep the magic going!

6 kilos in the offseason.Bah we been having it!Ok mine isnt exactly muscle
Interesting point. I like centres to be over 100kg. Reckon Fourie and Murray are about the same weight as Nonu and Billy-Bob.
Sjoe.
It is like Claytie getting excited if Ricky loses 6 KG’s…
Just hope he did not lose any pace and hope that he does not get an injury,because that is usually what happens when you put on so much muscle in a short amount of time,the ligaments take a while to get use to it.
1.87m 102 kg..about the same stats as tana umaga in his prime ..
Any news on meyer bosman and his conditioning? If he can gain 8kg muscle ,he will be 1.92m 110kg ..sonny bill williams is down as 1.93m 109 kg.
He did look rather staunch when I spoke to him..
Perhaps a combo of pure muscle and water
@bergshark (Comment 7) :
Like my friend says; ‘Of hy is net te lui om te kak’
Not that sione lauaki is pure muscle,but that bulk is difficult to contain..
@Big Fish (Comment 2) : they’re listed as 105 each
@Honey Badger (Comment 4) : Stef has been doing this stuff long enough that I’m sure he’s done it safely.
honestly, I reckon they must have a lifegaurd on permanent standby every time they take Stef swimming. With that oke’s body fat percentage, I don’t know how he can stay in the water for more than 10 minutes without getting hypothermia.
@robdylan (Comment 10) :
2 or 3kg less than Williams?
Wait for Big Dan to run over these sissies.
Lindeque has the perfect combo of pace and size for 13: hope he lights it up this year.
Stephanus must have scoffed down quite a bit of creatine
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 14) :
Or a few pampoenkoekies!
There was an arti in a sasi edition,where jake white was going on about conditioning..made the point that when the boks lost to the irish in 2004 on british tour,the irish were about 4kg heavier than when the boks played them in sa @ beginning of 2004 int season..irish bulked up specifically for their rematch with boks(also had the luxury of being more rested than boks)
@Richard Ferguson (KCM) (Comment 15) : Hehehe Kind of like me and the chicken nuggets at Newlands, or Morne and the alcohol free beer.
Creatine with the morning oats..
i will have a look at him tomorrow as i,m attending a coaching seminar at kings park tomorrow where i think john plumtree and the sharks guys will be involved.should be interesting to see how big he has got…
Stef is getting prepared for Crusaders midfield pairing of SBW (108kg) and Robbie Fruean (104kg)
@Honey Badger (Comment 4) :
I hope he doesn’t turn into a Trevor Halstead who tried to crashball anything and everything.
I loved Halstead the center, strongly disliked Halstead the crashballer.
Good for you Stef. Oud maar nog nie koud
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : pity Swannie isn’t 105 anymore…
@robdylan (Comment 23) :
Did he lose weight?
@robdylan (Comment 23) :
Whoever partners Stefan (I don’t like using the name Stef anymore
) is going to have to be a defencive monster when we play the Saders.
@Big Fish (Comment 24) : yes… isn’t it obvious? I’m trying to find out how much, but nobody will tell me
@KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : that comment on the other thread about being a grown-up refers…
@KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : Just stick with Oupa!!
And Smit lost 7kg in the off season. Although his off season was a bit longer. Still wants to lose 2 more before the S15 starts…. But then again, I caught this on KEO
Is the rumour true that the Sharks will be training somewhere else -not in Durbs, not even in KZN – during next week?
Rob said they heading to rustenburg area
@Big Fish (Comment 24) :
I didnt even recognise him at the wedding..
Scrap that, I didnt even know he was there..
Oupa is awesome! They don’t make them like that anymore.
@SharksRTB (Comment 30) : Rustenburg it is… I suspect you knew that
@robdylan (Comment 34) : Are you sure its not sun city? It would make absolutely no sense training in Rustenburg, but sun city or somewhere in pilanesberg would make sense.
@vanmartin (Comment 33): He is great and a fantastic role model – I think the young’uns like Pat Lambie are taking note of his work ethic.
@war1 (Comment 35) : the royal bafokeng sports palace would make the most sense, but then again thats not in rustenburg either
@war1 (Comment 35) : it might be “near Rustenburg” rather than actually in it
@war1 (Comment 37) : yip the stadium is in bafokeng but they say its rustenburg. The stadium is just outside rustenburg
@robdylan (Comment 38) : Did you see Ross Skeate’s Tweet on also being in the Stade Francais calender as December?
So now he’s old and fat.
He’s put on 6 kilos? Pfffft!
@robdylan (Comment 38) : @Ben (Comment 39) : royal bafokeng is at least twenty kilos out of rustenburg, not really ‘near’ in my books, in fact you pass through another township before you get to phokeng where it is. Ok, rant over.
@war1 (Comment 43) : Feeling better now?
@war1 (Comment 43) : yeah that other township is part of rustenburg so basicly its about 5 to 10km from when you leave rtb. So no its not far been there allot
@Ben (Comment 45) : Its called thlabane. And its still part of rustenburg
@Ben (Comment 45) : Neither are part of rustenburg. But anyway, Ive heard the bafokeng sports palace has really top class facilities.
@war1 (Comment 47) : Where do you stay?
@war1 (Comment 47) : Have seen better but its a very nice stadium.
@war1 (Comment 47) : Imo thlabane and phokeng is part of rustenburg. Even with the world cup the venue showed as; Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg
@war1 (Comment 43) :
I hope you feel much better now.. lol..
@Ben (Comment 50) :
That’s cos Rustenburg is pronounceable..
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 52) : hahaha yes true but also because its very close to rustenburg
@Ben (Comment 53) :
But its not in Rustenburg.. Thats the point we are trying to make.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 54) : Read my comment 45 I know its not in rustenburg. The arguement is how far out of rustenburg
Bloody hell you okes must be bored to spend so much time and effort on where the stadium really is
@Pokkel (Comment 56) :
Is this the cartography thread?
Allow me to shed some light
–>@Ben (Comment 55) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 54) : Thlabane is part of Rustenburg. It is right on the towns “border”. From there its about 10km to Phokeng. Where theres nothing in between. Almost through Phokeng, on the Sun City side is the RBSP. So its about 15km OUTSIDE Rustenburg.
@SharksRTB (Comment 59) :
Thanx for the geography lesson
Man, would love to get a jersey signed…. we don’t get much opportunity here…
@SharksRTB (Comment 61) : Would be awesome
@SharksRTB (Comment 61) : I doubt you’ll get a chance. Seems like there will be lots of tactical planning which means that training sessions will probably not be open to the public.
@war1 (Comment 63) : Hope the fences aren’t to high then!
@Ben (Comment 64) : royal bafokeng was the base for the england team in the football world cup, i think security measures will be in place
the sharks vs stormers warm up game will be on supersport…thinks its the 5th of feb…
aren’t there a few fantastic golf courses and game reserves in the area. could it be that they are focusing on mental preparation !!
@war1 (Comment 65) : Will take a loooong ladder with then!
@prgdad (Comment 67) : Obviously there is sun city is close by. 2 great golf courses there!
Watching sharksbite..team looking good,training hard..
Oupa is pure class, glad he is still in the Sharks team, the man who slipped through the Bok selectors fingers for some reason through the years.
@Treehugger (Comment 71) : what do you mean? He played 37 tests?
he should have played a lot more, didnt know it was 37 games thou, why was he dropped, and yes i know he played overseas, he should have been in the bok team this past season, age discrimination ?
@Ben (Comment 69) : are you from close by?
@SharksRTB (Comment 74) : I stay in rustenburg
Go oupa stef make us proud
so what is a few pounds niks and its mussles
the other teams are in for it
and i must make my way to RTB can anyone tell what time they will be having their practice
@chaz (Comment 76) : No one knows where when and if we’ll be able to watch them!
Just hope Stefan doesn`t go through the same transition process that Percy went through.
Remember he couldn`t put a foot wrong when he returned from UK, had an outstanding season and the next year he just lost shape, Stormers didn`t select him anymore.
Hope it`s not an age thing . . .
