Lions, MTN confirm partnership

Officials from cellular network operator MTN and the Lions Rugby Union confirmed a rumour that has been circulating since the weekend at a press conference in Johannesburg today.

MTN will be the Lions’ title sponsor for three years and will aim to use their technology offerings as a means to improve interactivity between the Union and its fans. This in addition to pouring further cash – rumoured to be R20 million a season – into the Lions’ coffers.

Together with the massive financial injection the Lions received from equity partners Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichkowitz, the MTN sponsorship money puts the Gauteng team at the top of the pile in terms of resources. That wealth has yet to result in any notable player acquisitions ahead of the 2011 Super Rugby season, however.

  • Yeah and according to some we are as Sharks supporters extremely jealous of the lions getting this sponsir

See you can have someone pouring in money, but if they dont get results they take away the smarties

Club rugby in JHB is a mess , and a union needs a strond feeder system, they dont have.

they dont have a Academy, again they fail in that department.

And i dont mean this in a bad way at all, good luck to the lions and their endevours, but you wont get the crows back unless your systems are right and results come in

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : The thing is that the average fan will think that because they have all this money available, they should perform… and perform well. It would also appear that putting an “academy” together is the last thing on the unions mind. They head hunting players, but as you mentioned are yet to sign a big name player.

  • @Farlington (Comment 11) : if i had that amount of money, i would go out and buy up all the up and coming schoolboys for this year for example: Goosen, Haupfleish, Small-Smith etc. and build a young team around the current crop of talent theyve got. with the amount they offered beast, they could have bought the whole SA schools side for the next 3 years…

  • Wow,the amount of interest and concern for the Lions on this site moves me to tears. For a Union with abysmal management the Lions still managed to bring through the likes of Habana,Fourie,Alberts,Vermaak,Ludik,Deysel,Taute,Jantjies x2,Big Joe etc, etc. Now with new direction and having learnt from their recent past(seemingly),the process to put in place the neccessary structures has begun. It’s amazing how on the one hand you criticize Lions fans for having unrealistic expectations and then with the other, beat the union for not being ready to take on the world only 4 months into the new dawn! Some perspective please.Yes the Lions won’t get close to winning the super 15 but trust me i’m far happier as a Lions supporter today than BM(before Mitch).Best the Sharks work on their own “feeder systems” as the one in Jo’burg is about to run dry and we will be competing for those out of Bloem too.How the wheel turns!!Got to love it!

  • @VanWilder (Comment 13) : problem is without experienced campaigners around to win games and teach you to win, the best talent will get wasted. it is a double edged sword. but i agree wasting that money on one player is daft. i would keep some money and use it to get boks that are retiring this year to do short training contracts next year. get them to train the age group players for a month or two. victor and smit could be invaluable there.

They remind me of Man City football club who are signing the top players in the world and yet their youth teams are not that great and once the UEFA Spending Regulations start (this year I believe) they wont be able to spend like they are the moment!!

To me they are not being wise but rather foolish (The Lions)

  • @wade (Comment 16) : we are giving the lions such a hard time because they now think everything will fall into place… yip, you guys produced alot off talent through the years, but theyve been winning currie cup at other unions… not much worth to the lions. remember, you guys got cash at the moment, but you still have got the same management at the top that cost you guys a few players through contract etc. i just see it with still daft management, now only theyve got money too…

i do believe you guys will feature better in the future than youve done lately, and its also in the best interest of SA rugby that you do, but i still feel for the BEST way forward you guys need better top half management. o yes, and thats only my opinion!

The key here is to create the environment that allows them to blossom and build sustainable success. I hope all the stakeholders there have the necessary patience to let that happen.

out of the one mentioned only Vermaal and Jantjies are still Lions. IMO Vermaak only because there is a surplus of scrummies in all unions.
