Officials from cellular network operator MTN and the Lions Rugby Union confirmed a rumour that has been circulating since the weekend at a press conference in Johannesburg today.
MTN will be the Lions’ title sponsor for three years and will aim to use their technology offerings as a means to improve interactivity between the Union and its fans. This in addition to pouring further cash – rumoured to be R20 million a season – into the Lions’ coffers.
Together with the massive financial injection the Lions received from equity partners Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichkowitz, the MTN sponsorship money puts the Gauteng team at the top of the pile in terms of resources. That wealth has yet to result in any notable player acquisitions ahead of the 2011 Super Rugby season, however.Tweet
