A physical FNB Maties side took on the Stormers at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday morning, with the defending champions eventually going down 0-19 to last season’s Super 14 finalists

Varsitycup.co.za reports that the Stormers scored three tries to nil against a game Maties side who were led from the front, quite literally, by Western Province hooker Callie Visagie.

Visagie and lock Hugo Kloppers – who was rested today – are the frontrunners to land the Maties captaincy this year and the former’s performance would have done his chances no harm.

Stellenbosch fronted up well up front on the day, showing plenty of physicality at the breakdown and their hard-running centres impressed with their direct approach. Scrumhalf Donald Stevens – who did not play in last year’s Varsity Cup, after helping his side to the 2009 title – made a welcome return in Maties Maroon, combining well with last season’s first-choice No.10 André Kemp.

For the Stormers, Stellenbosch winger Tythan Adams – a member of last year’s Varsity Cup-winning side – scored two tries, with centre Michael van der Spuy also touching down.

The Stormers led 7-0 at half-time, before scoring two more tries in the second half, with players like Ruan Kitshoff, Lionel Cronjé and Marcel Brache all impressing for the ‘visitors.

The teams:

FNB Maties: 15 Ruan Combrinck, 14 Ryan Nel, 13 Stokkies Hanekom, 12 Louis Jordaan, 11 Heinrich Steyl, 10 André Kemp, 9 Donald Stevens, 8 Meyer Swanepoel, 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Helmut Lehman, 5 Andrew Prior, 4 Shaun McDonald, 3 Suan Havenga, 2 Callie Visagie (captain), 1 Kenny Langeveld.

Stormers: 15 Marcel Brache, 14 Tiger Bax, 13 Burton Klaassens, 12 Michael van der Spuy, 11 Tythan Adams, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Willem van der Wal, 7 Tertius Daniller, 6 Wimpie van der Walt, 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Buhle Mxunyelwa, 2 Sidney Tobias, 1 JD Moller.
Replacements – from: Albe de Swardt, Tom Botha, Hilton Lobberts, Reniel Hugo, Nic Groom, Lionel Cronjé, Willie Le Roux, Reuben Johannes, Garrick Matthee, Kurt Coleman, Quinn Roux.

  • Hilton Lobberts?? Is he still in the mix?

How many of these guys who played for the Stormers WILL actually be Stormers come 18 February?

  • So Meyer Swanepoel has found a new home. You will remember he played Sharks under 21 last year.

Callie Visagie has allegedly signed for the Bulls for later this year.

That is what I thought. I can HARDLY see the purpose of this team being called the Stormers. I would have said this was a VC trial match.

A surprise inclusion above Yaya Hartzenbergh??

Also surprised to see Stormers risking Lionel Cronje now. If something should happen to him they`re in trouble . . .

Was about to ask the question abt Meyer Swanepoel.
Not happy with him leaving the Sharks, but then again, there is so much depth among the loosies AND the Sharks buy from outside as well. It irks me that every Sharks fan wants us to buy Heinrich Brussow.

Watch out for Lambert Groenewald, though… a big kid who is very aggressive on the field. Might just be our next Deysel.

On Sport 24 they mention that this was 3rd and 4th choice players mostly. Could be that he is ABOVE this group in the pecking order.
