Several Sharks stars performed well during the SA Under 20 trial game played at Riebeeck West High School on Saturday. Baby Bok coach Dawie Theron has trimmed his squad to 30 players and all of the Sharks, bar the injured Siseko Jatfa, have made the cut.

Centres Heimar Williams and Piet Lindeque were two of the stars for the white team, which recorded a 20-15 victory over the blue team. Lindeque scored one of the tries, along with Sharks winger Mandla Dube. Other Sharks player singled out for praise were loose forward Marcell Coetzee and big Hilton College winger Emil Schwartz. Jaco van Tonder, playing fullback for the blue side, made a number of promising attacking forays, “regularly piercing the defence”, in the words of a SARU press release.

Lindeque, Williams, Schwartz, van Tonder, Dube, Coetzee and prop Nick Schonnert all retain their places in the trimmed-down squad, which will play a final trial game against Western Province on Thursday.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 4) : it’s so nice to see so many three quarters in there… in fact, we have two centres, two wings and a fullback. Not just props and locks this time around

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : he did, ja… poor lad is somewhat bleak at the moment – understandably so.

    He’s young, though – he’ll bounce back

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : I must admit that knowing that there are some potential in the backline coming up the ranks, makes me feel all warm inside. The question is will we retain them, or will they be snapped up by other unions?

  • @Farlington (Comment 9) : Good chance of retention IMO.

our Midfield (Terblanche, Jacobs) are nearing the end of their carreers and I think Odwa doesn’t have tooo many more seasons left in him.

So there IS a chance that these boys will be looked at as keepers.

  • Hopefully you can keep the Lions money boys at bay. They are in the market for any player now.

  • Well done to all the Sharks players in the squad. For Marcell Coetzee who comes from a small school and plays in the most hotly competed for position in SA rugby, to come this far this quickly and beat out so many already well-known youngsters in the process, amazing achievement. Also hats off to Theron and co for rewarding a quality player Heimar Williams. I think Heimar is upping his game all the time and it’s going to be good to see how Dwayne Jenner responds to this when he gets his shot.

  • @beet (Comment 15) : well – based on a recent interview that Sean Everitt did with Craig Lewis, it sounds like he’s not expecting Williams and Lindeque to be available for much of the Vodacom Cup. Jenner and Pretorius will probably be the starting centres, so they’ll have ample opportunity to impress

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : So I guess this means Theron intends keeping the u20 squad together for the next few months. If so, I wonder if this approach has been adopted before in prep for the junior RWC.

  • @beet (Comment 17) : well – I wonder. It would probably make sense, wouldn’t it? If they’ve organised a proper set of warmup games.

You know what would be awesome? Seeing the under 20 side included in the Vodacom Cup

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) :
I’m just glad that we seem to be more proactive this time around. I think this approach will work wonders for some of the “C”’s . Confidence, Cohesion, Communication coz of the time together. I would have liked an u20 tournament to run alongside the V/C, so that some of the guys that missed out like Francois K, who I think you said is injured could have got a shot. It also would have given Theron a chance to pick form players. With Theron running the show and his selections I’m starting to feel confident that we are going to do well aka beat NZ.
I don’t think I’d be brave enough to put u20s up against some of the better V/C teams but they’d gain a ton of experience if it were to happen. Maybe they should introduce an u20 allocation system – like each V/C team has to field at least 3 or 4 SA u20 players.
