With the Varsity Shield starting a week prior to that of the Varsity Cup, we bring you the UKZN squad that will take part in this inaugural tournament.

The side is to be coached by Beans Bateman, a man that brings with him experience that is worth gold. He will be assisted by the young Dylan Campbell.

Bateman started his coaching career at the Pietermaritzburg varsity in 1988, and went onto bigger things quickly, moving to College Rovers in ’93 and taking them to Moor Cup Champs a few times and going to the Club Champs. He also coached the Wildebeest side for a few years. Campbell is a young 23 year old who will hoping to make the most of his chance to learn from such a great mentor.

Bateman will have a bunch of his former schoolboys that he coached at Maritzburg College in his ranks as he takes on the challenge of Varsity Shield.

  • @JJR (Comment 6) : Its a bit harsh judging him on his primary school abilities, hopefully he has learnt to catch in the last7 or so years. ;-)

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 7) :

I was about to say the same thing..

I am sure the man can catch a ball if he is in the UKZN team.

And generally cowards don’t make it that far as rugby players, so I am sure he got over whatever he was scared of..

  • @JJR (Comment 13) : JJ – I know this isn’t subtle, but I’m just gonna come right out and say it…. I think you want to be a bit more careful of passing judgements on these guys. You’d be surprised how many of them read this stuff. I’ve already had to deal with a number of complaints – or rather queries from people wanting to know who you are!

I realise that you know a lot of these guys from school and though you may not personally rate many of them all that highly, some acknowledgement of the fact that they have been selected for representative sides is probably in order.

  • Wish i was in Durbs, what a opportunity to play some rugga on TV. This shield thing is a great chance for those guys who are in and out of rugby…they could catch a break playing in this tournament.

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : No problem; i never mean any of it to be personal it is rather a friendly joke than meant to be insulting…u can tell me who complained if you wish so that i could personally say sorry. Can only think of hargreaves who might be upset, but i said some things at the time, because i was more dissapointed in their performances than anything else. Sorry…maybe i am a bit too honest and need to put a filter in my head.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : what can you tell me about Mavro? He lives down my road. He was awesome back in school. Super humble guy in person. Studying at my campus as well. What can you tell me about Breynard Stander? He was pretty good back in school. Made SA U18 as well as Shane Savage? Two other Westville Boys are in America, in Shaun Davies and Dylan Lubbe. last I heard they were hopeful to make the American rugby team.

  • Nice to see Justin Meanwell in the mix. He captained the Maritzburg College 1st team a few years ago.

Would be great to see the standard of UKZN rugby improving with this exposure.

I have chatted to Mavro on facebook a bit. Nice guy. Seems down to earth.
