Varsity Cup Rules

The Varsity Cup starts Monday 7 February and brings with it a few interesting rules that I thought might be of interest, should you not have been aware.

First and foremost, every team consists of 23 players, 15 on the field with 8 substitutes. Of the 8 substitutes, each team is forced to have 2 props and a hooker.

Front row players are not allowed to be replaced by any player other than a front rower.

The team that causes uncontested scrums is forced to finish the match with 14 players.

There is also something called a strategy break that will last 2 minutes in each half and will be called at the referee’s discretion between the 18 and 22 minute mark. Coaches are allowed onto the park in these few minutes.

As for eligibility rules:

Players must be 25 years old and younger. Players may turn 25 during the competition.

At least 15 of the 23 match day players must be bona fide registered students of the university.

A player must have been part of the 23 man match day squad twice to be eligible to play in the semi final or final.

The games begin in two weeks time and we are sure to be entertained!

If I remember correctly the prop thing was tried in some french comp. I think. And reduced uncontested scrums dramatically.

That’s good though, nobody wants to see uncontested scrums!

  • Pity that all the players are not required to be registered bona fide students. It sort of defeats the object of being a students competition. What would the reasoning be behind it?

I am also excited for that to happen.

A 5/3 split of forwards and backs will greatly help..

I suppose it brings in the big names that aren’t necessarily registered at a varsity, like Tim Whitehead and last year Conrad Hoffmann.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : Well isnt that defeating the purpose of the Varsity Cup being a talent idenification process? I think every player should at least be a registered student! I dont see the point of guys like Whitehead and Hoffman playing VC…do they need to be rediscovered or something??
If you dont have to be a student then dont call it Varsity Cup…call it a club competition as in effect thats what it is!

Look, I hear what you are saying and I agree to a certain extent.

I am not sure why exactly every single player should not have to be registered. A you say, it is a talent finding mission at the end of the day.

  • I also dont see the point of having a strategic 2 minute stoppage. What can you really say in 2 minutes that is already not being communicated on to the field via the water boys/ medical staff?
It seems like its a way to break the action to show some adverts!
I guess money really does talk!

  • @McLovin (Comment 1) : They have been using 23 man squads in the Heineken Cup (or H Cup in France), Amlin Challenge Cup, Top 14 and the english premiership, as well as Magners League. It seems to work pretty well.

  • Now that I think of it, we saw quite a few penalty tries from scrums this season in the NH so far.

It really allows for the scrum to be used as an attacking option.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 27) :

After each 2 minute strategising session, a pink ball will be played with for 3 minutes.

If the home team can score a try with the pink ball, all the home crowd, sporting the necessary gear ofcourse, can claim a free Carling Black Label at a Spur the next day.

    Its a crowd thing.

Its a good idea in theory..

Its a lot of admin though, and another stop in play to get rid of the pink ball..

Each captain will also wear pink shorts.. this is a campaign to keep the aggro on the field.. and all be merry after the match..

  • I have to admit that I made a mistake earlier.

The pink shorts are for the captains in only the first game. There after it will be worn by each of the four man if the matches from the previous round.

The whole idea is to get people to know about violence against women and to raise awareness.

Each man of the match will also get a bunch of roses to give to the most important woman in his life, be it his mother, wife, sister, lecturer.

Just wanted to point that out.
