We received a press release from the Sharks this morning, confirming the availability of the new official Super Rugby home and away jerseys.
We shared the first pictures of the new jerseys about a month ago and I think it’s fair to say that the response has been favourable, with many fans rushing out to buy replicas at the Sharks Cage, Sneakers and other outlets. The design concept behind the jerseys was to retain the traditional black and white colours now synonymous with the Sharks, but to introduce some fresh elements, such as the radiating pattern of lines which represents the Sun rising over the East coast.
“We are delighted with the new look for the 2011 season,” said Alastair McArthur, chairman of Sharks sponsor Mr. Price. “As title sponsor of The Sharks, and as a leading fashion retailer, the jersey’s modern, fresh look embraces the latest in sport design trends. This, coupled with the technical properties, and research that has gone into specially manufacturing this jersey, makes The Sharks the stand-out team of the year. We are proud to be associated with them and wish them all the best for the Super Rugby season ahead”.
“It was a collaboration between Mr. Price, The Sharks and manufacturers, Reebok,” added Sharks CEO Briyan van Zyl. “This ensured that all the latest product technology and new design features have been incorporated in the match kit. Ultimately our aim was to create a jersey that allowed the players to perform at their best. To do this, we had to incorporate a number of technical features to enhance player performance which makes it easier for players to wear and move in, as well as ensuring comfortability and a body hugging fit.”
The Sharks will wear the black home jerseys for all home games, and the white away jersey for all away games, provided there is no clash with the opposing teams colours. This implies that the Sharks will wear their black jerseys for the away game against the Cheetahs, but should be in white for the remaining 7 away fixtures.

Looks cheap.
Oh wait, I did not see Mr. Price there for a second…
We’ve had better ones.
I actually like it.
Does that mean that the jersey I bought before it was officially launched is therefore unofficial?
My only problem with the jersey is logic. “The design concept behind the jerseys was to retain the traditional black and white colours now synonymous with the Sharks, but to introduce some fresh elements, such as the radiating pattern of lines which represents the Sun rising over the East coast.”
If they mention East Coast specifically, my mind automatically puts a map of South Africa on the shirt and I find that the sun now actually rises in the West. But that’s probably me overthinking it.
The MR PRICE is waaaay better than a certain DHL logo….. :p
@jessi (Comment 4) : The Mr Price logo fits with the jersey. Imagine throwing a yellow and red sponsors logo onto the Sharks jersey or any jersey other than a plain white, yellow or red jersey and you’ve got a monstrosity.
WeerProbeer should’ve negotiated to leave the yellow out and only put the red DHL figures. It would’ve looked a lot better.
Speaking of jerseys, does anyone know when the Bulls and the Cheetahs are unveiling their jerseys?
The Cheetahs are probably easy at the moment – just a plain white t-shirt until they land a sponsor.
ok now i am confused the picture before showed the jersey as if it lightened in the middle, but looking at these pics the black is the same. it must have been the camera flash that gave it that impression. looks really good.
@Butchie34 (Comment 6) : and their theme song “hey there delilah”
the worst thing about it is the ridiculous supeRugby logo. must have been an aussie design. super ugby. uggboots. they try to sell super 15 as graet, but then call it ugby. dumbasses.
That is the first time I’ve noticed that the Supersport logo is integrated into the Sharks badge
Could almost be Harks
Its nice tho, looks very cool.
I really like the jerseys, let’s hope it will bring us home that super trophy we really deserve. I will still be wearing last years cc jersey but will still count I hope… GO SHARKS!!!
@molly (Comment 10) : that’s how you can tell the official players’ jersey from the replica… as far as I know the replica doesn’t have the supersport S
@Butchie34 (Comment 6) : seen the bulls jersey at sneakers..nothin different to last year..
@robdylan (Comment 12) : Ah… makes sense. Have the replica makers not cottoned on to this?
I like these jerseys, way better than our previous ones. Nice to see us wear the white on all away games…the white looks shweeet. GO Sharks!!! Well done Reebok…
@molly (Comment 10) : it has been on the player jerseys for years now but not on the fans jersey. it was a way to tell the dirrence between the replicas and the jerseys the team actually wore. might be the same this year.
@robdylan (Comment 12) : damn i see you answered. oh well.
@JJR (Comment 15) : i would like to see them wear the white ones at home in feb and march because of the heat. the black jerseys will probably be hotter.
@molly (Comment 14) : same manufacturer. but the team would like to have jerseys that are worth more. anyone can get a replica, but only players get the official. it is fair.
@try time (Comment 19) :
but the team would like to have jerseys that are worth more
So the players buy their jersey’s at Woolies and the supporters at Mr. Price…
I get it.
just looked closer and the embroidery is gone. everything is just stickers now. pity. i liked that about the old jerseys the sponsors name came off in the wash, but the shark remained.
@Morné (Comment 20) : basically yes. but as it is reebok it still costs way more than the majority of south africans earn in a week.
Does it not have the Investec Zebra Logo ?
If not why not ?
I thought the competition was known as the Investec Super Rugby Comp. or is that just in New Zealand ?
SOOOOOOOOO many questions !
Any thoughts on how Smitty looks. His jersey almost looks too big on him. He does not appear to be carrying any extra weight.
i must say john does look in good shape.cant wait to see him play.love the jersey
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 23) :
I reckon that is only in New Zealand bud..
@molly (Comment 10) : The jerseys worn by the players have been like that since about 2004. The replicas which us plebs can buy has a normal S.
@Morné (Comment 1) : Jealousy brings out the worst in people.
@try time (Comment 21) : I’ve already bought the replica and as far as I could see the Sharks logo is still embroidered on. That’s if I can still remember the jersey at home.
@Butchie34 (Comment 6) : Go to the cheetahs website and have a look at the player profiles.
they are wearing blue Puma training kit (puma are their kit sponsor) The design is actually pretty cool. I would not be surprised if their Jersey looks similar but with a white theme.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 28) :
Don’t get me wrong!
I bought almost all my clothes from Mr. Price.
Then I got a job…
@try time (Comment 21) :
@Butchie34 (Comment 29) :
Nope it is all screenprint except for the Super Rugby logo which is a vinyl/plastic stick on.
@Morné (Comment 31) :
Cappy is looking lean and mean though, excellent to see that.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 32) : Ok, that annoys me then. How many washes will it take before the screenprinting gets washed away and then that’s R599 down the drain?
Looks like the 2011 edition goes straight into a freaking frame.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 30) : No offence, but is your name Sheldon Cooper by any chance?
You appear to believe I am serious in all my sarcastic remarks.
@Butchie34 (Comment 35) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 32) : oh thats ok that will last longer than those vinyl stickers do. it will probably just fade a little. aren’t the mr price logos also vinyl. they look shiny in the photo?
@Morné (Comment 31) : i used to buy at edgars and truworths then i got a family. now i can’t afford to buy from mr price reject store.
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 23) :
Nope.
We have Vodacom Super Rugby
You have Investec Super Rugby (were the Rebelsport S14)
Convicts have Super Rugby (were Investec S14) I can’t find a name for their 2011 title sponsor anywhere.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 39) : maybe it is the same as the cheetahs.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 32) : @try time (Comment 37) : ok i looked at the hi res pic and you are right. the mr price is screen printed. looks bright for a print.
@Butchie34 (Comment 35) : The screenprinting will not wash away EVER. in the old days when screenprinting was similar to the current vinyl stick on stuff yes. Nowadays the WHOLE Jersey is screen printed. that is why the inside of the Jersey is white and the outside has the design on.
@try time (Comment 37) : on the sleeve I think so yes, but on the front it is all printed.
The Sharks should really try to be more creative with their away jersey, perhaps even venture away from the colour white.
@Butchie34 (Comment 36) : I didn’t for a minute think you were being serious. I was only giving my opinion on what I think their jersey would look like.
Don’t know if you guys heard but here it is…Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie has won the Sport24 Performance of the Year for 2010…well done Lammetjie…very proud of you.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 45) : No problem.
Those sponsorless jerseys are the best, so the supporters are at least in for a treat. The 2001 jersey when we couldn’t find a sponsor in time is my favourite jersey. I wear it the most. Maybe it’s so I don’t walk around like a human billboard.
@Nita (Comment 46) : He really does deserve it. Hopefully he can carry on the good work into 2011.
@Nita (Comment 46) :
I voted for him.
Voted for Bakkies as the Plonker and that Lingirie pic as the photo of the year.
@Butchie34 (Comment 47) : With the right coaches, team mates and SUPPORTERS behind him, I’m sure he can do even beter
well i own a couple of those jerseys and they very nice
@KSA Shark © (Comment 48) : The lingerie pic won but Plonker of the year went to Pieter De Villiers.
Just saw the jersey in Sportsmens. The Sharks logo is almost part of the ink-print on the jersey, so will fade with the color.
The other stuff on the sleeves are the stick-on stuff.
@Nita (Comment 51) :
ah thanks. Can’t access that from work to check.
BTW you must not forget that I have 4 tickets with your name on them for any one of the SRugby matches in Dbn.
This just in: the bulls new super 15 sponsors are Alpha Pharmacy- methylhexaneamine will be the logo on the shirts….
@Morné (Comment 52) : what about the main Mr Price logo on the chest?
Briyani van Zyl?
@robdylan (Comment 55) : everything except the sleeves are printed and will not come off in any washing machine unless one of the kids left a scissors in a pocket before putting the clothes in the wash.
@Butchie34 (Comment 3) : That was exactly MY first thought as well!
@klempie (Comment 58) :
What?
That you were ALSO overthinking it?
Did anyone hear this?
http://www.jacarandafm.com/kagiso/content/en/jacaranda/jacaranda-podcasts?oid=1055859&sn=Detail&pid=6093&Super-15–Sponsors
@Butchie34 (Comment 36) : I love that dude. Sheldon I mean, not KSA.
@klempie (Comment 61) : Who TF? Is Sheldon? He sounds like a Stormers supporter.
@robdylan (Comment 55) :
What OUpa said.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 62) :
Nah. He has more hand-eye coordination than the average Stormers supporter…
@klempie (Comment 64) : But he IS gay?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 65) : I would say he’s asexual.
@Morné (Comment 63) : thanks
@klempie (Comment 66) : a sexual what?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 68) :
@KSA Shark © (Comment 68) : failure… a bit of a role model for klempie…
@robdylan (Comment 70) :
You cannot get more off topic than that!
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 71) : Yes, but as I’ve said before. The Rules do not apply for the ruling elite around here.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 71) : I’m a bit of a legend, I know
@robdylan (Comment 70) : Hehehehe
@KSA Shark © (Comment 53) : I haven’t forgotten, we’re planning on making the trip, I’ll let you know…THANKS.
@klempie (Comment 72) :
Aah Klempie.. The ‘elite’ like picking on you.. its just one of those things you know.. Do you feel oppresed?
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 76) : Always.
Ok I have just looked at these photos on a regular PC screen and the white jersey’s SuperRugby logo is not plastic.
Another difference between the supporters jersey and the team jersey.
“such as the radiating pattern of lines which represents the Sun rising over the East coast.”
good thing the lines don’t radiate up the back of the jersey starting at the bottom. we definitely don’t want the players thinking the sun shines out their behinds.
@klempie (Comment 72) :
@klempie (Comment 77) :
i’ve finally figured out what klempie means. I think it is some sort of pig latin for “I have a complex”
@try time (Comment 79) :
sighs…
The tone of this website decreases with every passing day…
@KSA Shark © (Comment 80) : Your pig Latin clearly needs some work.
@klempie (Comment 81) : hey klempie, i was talking about people that think the sun shines out their behinds.
@try time (Comment 83) :
Def gonna get me one of these!
Like last year’s, I like the white one more
