Dawie Theron’s SA Under 20 trial group will play their final trial match against a Western Province side in Belville this afternoon. Theron has named a starting fifteen containing four junior Sharks players, while two others will make an appearance off the 14-man bench.

The Sharks are once again well represented among the three-quarters, with wings Mandla Dube and Emil Schwartz starting, along with outside centre Piet Lindeque. Port Natal eighthman Marcell Coetzee is the fourth Sharks representative in the starting lineup, while inside centre Heimar Williams and prop Nick Schonnert should get some game time in the second half.

Theron confirmed that “this will be the final game our trialists will have to play as a unit before they join their provincial sides during the Vodacom Cup and their tertiary institutions in the Varsity Cup. Our intentions as coaches will be to monitor as much from these competitions as possible, but for now it’s a great opportunity for the guys to make a mark against a side like DHL Western Province.”

    I agree with you!

We have to push to take the team to the top. And if it means giving them a few players from within the ranks, then its a small price to pay..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Lets see how the Vodacom Cup goes, maybe the Sharks can sacrifice the VC, send some guys down to the varsity cup side and get those boys promoted??

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : the problem is that ukzn is based in pmb, and pmb has its own academy so don’t know how it’d work

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : don’t think the problem is with giving them players ,its the varsity cup rules, don’t the majority of the squad have to be full time students at ukzn? And sharks academy have a partnership with varsity college not ukzn

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I was slowly starting to buy into your idea of the u20s taking part in the Vodacom Cup after someone else suggested the same thing. Now I’m back off again. :???:
I’ll like to read the match report or the where it all went wrong report.

  • @beet (Comment 10) : I must be honest, I’m very surprised at that result.

Reckon it was a case of men against boys, particularly upfront.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Thanks Rob. One can never underestimate the difference 1 year makes at that level in terms of natural strength and experience.
After hearing this result, I really hope they pull Kitshoff out of tomorrow nights game, irrespective of what he benchpresses. It just doesn’t seem worth the risk esp. in the prop position where some guys only peak when they’re 30 e.g. Eugene v Staden. There’s no need to rush him.

  • @beet (Comment 13) : exactly. It could get very ugly very fast. No problem with picking teenagers amongst the backs, but forwards need to put on some “grown-up bulk”

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Reckon you’re right. Apparently they were dominated at the collisions.

    Also gave away 21 penalties.
