Sharks get their Park back – for the right Price

The Sharks today revealed that headline sponsor Mr Price has extended their backing of the team by coming on board as stadium sponsor as well. After being somewhat unexpectedly dumped by ABSA late last year, the shark tank will now officially be known as Mr Price Kings Park.

After a number of years of going under the characterless moniker of “the ABSA Stadium, Durban”, the Sharks’ home ground has now recovered a large part of it’s heritage by going back to the name it held for the better part of a century, Kings Park. The bills must be paid, of course, and Mr Price’s name will always be added to that, but I for one don’t mind one bit. Sponsors come and go, but the budget clothing chain has stuck by the Sharks through and through and proved that their blood is black and white.

So a big thanks to the new (old) sponsor and a hearty well done to all involved in securing this deal. Now let’s go watch some rugby at Mr Price Kings Park!

  • good stuff from mr price. nice to see big companies sometimes give the fans what they want.

too often big companies change the names of stadiums, and they don’t even realise how much sentimental value a stadium’s name has for supporters.

i would not be fond of any company changing the name of loftus, so i am sure you guys feel the same about kings park.

whenever i am at a braai, if i am talking about your stadium, i always refer to kings park anyway. so, kudos to mr price.

Just wish they could call the surf contest The Mr Price 500 instead of Pro.

Pretty happy Kings Park is back.

Good on Mr.Price for giving our stadium name back. Respect to them, they will no doubt get plenty respect from Shark supporters. Though all the Shark supporters I know have always called it Kings Park or the Tank never Absa Stadium. Absa made a huge mistake by renaming our under their name ONLY! Actually pleased they no longer our sponsor.

    Well done to Mr. Price.

  • The best stadiums in the world, is not the biggest or the fanciest, but the ones with the best atmosphere. The ones where the crowds sing a long . One wishes Kings Park was like this. Sadly we Natalians are not none for our singing abilities at matches. Why not get our rugby playing schools whose atmosphere far out does any rugby stadium to come and have war cry Stand offs and make it a competition at Kingspark. They play before the Sharks play and contest while the sharks play. That’s 2000 students plus about 4000 parents or so will watch the match. Which means more revenue for the Sharks.
