Cilliers starts for Lions

Former Sharks prop Patric Cilliers will start at tight head for the Lions against the Sharks in a Neo Africa Tri-Series warm up match at Newlands on Tuesday night. Cilliers, who excelled for the Sharks in the number 3 jersey before a knee injury some years ago, comes in to replace the injured Jacbie Adriaanse.

Baby Bok Jaco Taute, who played in the unfamiliar inside centre position against the Stormers on Friday, is back in his favourite number 15 shirt, with Michael Killian moving to the wing and Deon van Rensburg taking over as Waylon Murray’s midfield partner. Another former Sharks, Rory Kockott, picked up an injury against the Stormers, meaning a return to the number 9 shirt for Jano Vermaak.

In other news, the Lions are set to announce a big-name signing at a hastily-convened press conference at Lanseria Airport tomorrow morning. Persistent rumours suggest that Butch James might be the player in question.

Lions team:

15 Jaco Taute, 14 Tonderai Chavhanga, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Deon van Rensburg, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Andre Pretorius, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe (capt), 4 George Earle, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg

  • Don`t be too quick to knock the lions scrum guys, they didn`t look half bad Friday night. Of course it was only against the stormers . . .

Taute back at fullback and Killian on the wing should also be an improvement.

  • Cilliers versus Beast? My money is easily on the Beast.

    Pretty handy Lions side though.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 7) : Couldnt agree more. Pat is handy in the loose, but has never been close to dominant at scrum time. Simply put, I would put good money on the fact that Beast will crush him. Badly.

  • @Morné (Comment 15) : You think? It seems like the Sharks are going to play their ‘B’ team against the Stormers….it’s a pity because that is the only one I’ll see although we know what we have in the ‘A’ side so it will be interesting to see what the other team can do!

  • I’d just be happy if we can cross the tryline and put some points on the board.

That monkey on our back not being able to finish off on attack needs to be removed if we are goin to have any success this season.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 16) :
    Copied from another thread:
To me it shows that Plum knows what he wants and who he’s best players are. Unlike other coaches he does not need to test and try combinations with these warm-up games….very much inline with the champion sides from NZ like the Saders – you dont see them testing and trying – they know by now who is who in the zoo…
