Sharks set to go all-out against Lions – Updated

Sharksworld has learned that the Sharks intend to field a formidable line up against the Lions in their opening Neo Africa Tri-Series encounter tomorrow night, with the combinations chosen probably showing a pretty good indication of who coach John Plumtree considers his first choice players.

Although a number of guys who would probably be a shoe-in for the opener on 18 February are currently unavailable – including Steven Sykes, who has missed the trip altogether – the side is pretty close to the strongest one available. Up front, John Smit will start at hooker, alongside Beat Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis. The fact that Bismarck du Plessis has played little part in training over the last week owing to a sore shoulder will have made this one a no-brainer, although the young Bok will no doubt be given the chance to impress against the Stormers on Saturday.

Sykes’s place in the number 4 jersey goes to Ross Skeate, who will start alongside Alistair Hargreaves in the second row. Jacques Botes, as the only fit opensider in the squad, starts with Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowski in a superbly balanced loose trio.

At the back, last year’s first-choice halfback pairing, Charl McLeod and Pat Lambie, will continue their partnership, with new boy Meyer Bosman coming in at inside centre to partner Stefan Terblanche. Lwazi Mvovo is another player carrying a niggle, so it’s the tried and tested wing combination of Odwa Ndungane and JP Pietersen that will wear 14 and 11 respectively. Louis Ludik is at fullback, with the remainder of the squad set to feature off an extended bench.

Update: We’ve just got the confirmed lineup, together with the replacements bench.

Sharks team:
15 Ludik, 14 Ndungane, 13 Terblanche, 12 Bosman, 11 Pietersen, 10 Lambie, 9 McLeod, 8 Kankowski, 7 Alberts, 6 Botes, 5 Hargreaves, 4 Skeate, 3 J du Plessis, 2 Smit(capt), 1 Mtawarira
Reserves: 16 Burden, 17 van Staden, 18 Mostert, 19 Adonga (Ojiambo), 20 Hoffman, 21 Potgieter, 22 Jacobs, 23 B du Plessis, 24 Bresler, 25 Engelbrecht, 26 Swanepoel, 27 Mvovo, 28 Richards

  • The team looks good – the only area where I have an issue is with lock.

I’m one of those people who believe in different players for different positions. Skeate and Hargs are too similar players to play together as a combination. Either Skeate or Hargs should play but never both. If Hargs is taken off, Skeate is his replacement and vice versa.

If Sykes can’t play, then the player in his place should be Mostert/Alberts.

I think there needs to be a balance in your lock combination with one being the athletic lock and the other, the enforcer. I know they’re Bulls but the best example of this is Matfield and Botha. At Bok level, it gets to me when they replace the 4 lock with Bekker.

Other than him being a Stormer, you’re throwing away your lock balance and while your lineouts might perform better, your scrums are going to suffer.

  • Its not the combos that interest me so much for this game but rather the individual tackiling, passing, kicking and rucking skills of the team. If those basics arent done well then it doesnt matter what combos you use it wont work. Get the basics right and the combos will sort themselves out.

  • @rekinek (Comment 50) : Yes our first choice XV has to have a start and game time, but thought that would happen for Saturdays game. We need to use these warm-ups smartly. Thought we would have tried out differenct combos etc.. Maybe leave our best on the bench to come on later. Or just give other players a run to see what we have in em. Anyhow just hope no injuries.

Really hoped to see what JLP, Hoffman and Dan Ojiambo could do.

That is why I was never critical of Bulls losing to Kings with mostly 2nd choice starters. Now they know what they have in them. They will be better prepared. No need to win these games or for that matter worry about the score board. Rather try out some of our other players and test them at this level. Think we will learn and improve more by doing that before we have to play Cheetahs.

  • I think the term “first choice 15″ has become somewhat meaningless with this Super Rugby format. In order for a team to be successful, they need two “first choice” players in each position. We as supporters need to get our heads around this, because I don’t think any Sharks 15 that runs out can be called the “first choice 15″, not anymore.

  • @Mocho (Comment 66) : It is not unusual for New Zealanders to come play in SA, not to mention coach. Plum played in SA, Putt, Tony Brown, etc. And now with Mitchell and Plum we have two NZers coaching in SA in Super Rugby. I really don’t think that it is a big deal for a NZer to come to SA, I just don’t think that any NZer that has a shot of making the AB squad for RWC 2011 would ever consider leaving this year.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 2) :

To me it shows that Plum knows what he wants and who he’s best players are. Unlike other coaches he does not need to test and try combinations with these warm-up games….very much inline with the champion sides from NZ like the Saders – you dont see them testing and trying – they know by now who is who in the zoo…

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 77) : Herbst is injured, but he was cut to the Vodacom squad anyway. Seems Plum is happy with the props he’s got. Nhlapo looks to be next in line if there’s an injury

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 72) : perhaps lions are after a big name. somebody who’s been tehre done that and in crunch time on the field will have ability to settle the youngsters. Now that they lost Fourie, perhaps Wikus is not able to get this by himself.
    dunno. just speculating a bit.

  • @Puma (Comment 53) : hear ya.

perhaps lions games was considered easier or it’s a first one so lets see how it goes and we will decide whether the boys need another run in stormers game.
