Easy does it, Sharks

The risk you run with the sort of warm-up game that the Sharks have in store tonight, is that you can easily get ahead of yourselves and end up not accomplishing very much at all.

We as fans are clearly all champing at the bit to get a bit of rugby on the go again – and I know that for the players the sense of excitement and anticipation is no less keen. They just want to get those jerseys on, get onto that field and start showing the coach what they can do. In order for tonight’s match to be meaningful in any way, the coaching staff needs to find a way to temper that enthusiasm and harness the excitement by setting some clear goals for the encounter.

It’s one thing to just let the players get out, get some contact and try some moves, but the absolutely most crucial objective of this opening encounter should be to get all 28 players through the game without injury. Given all the nonsense that has gone on in pre-season, it’s perhaps understandable if the boys want to get stuck in and give the Lions some proper food for thought, but if that comes at the expense of a serious injury to any man in the squad, I’d say it’s simply not worth it. While one never goes out to intentionally lose a game – and while, on paper, the Sharks should have the beating of the Lions tonight – we need to bear in mind that the result of this game really is of no importance whatsoever. We want the guys to give it a full go and try to fine tune their game, but this is not, I repeat NOT, the time for heroics.

It’s especially important for the young players in the squad, though, to prove that they can add to the side and make meaningful contributions in a game environment. With that in mind, I hope that John Plumtree gives Anton Bresler, Mark Richards, Conrad Hoffman and Dan Adonga/Ojiambo a reasonable opportunity to show how they fit in with the seniors. Another guy who really needs a proper run to show his mettle is on-trial SWD loose forward Jacques Engelbrecht and hopefully he’ll be afforded a good 40 minutes to use his bulk and pace to good effect.

The game won’t be on TV, but we’ll have a number of faithful lads at the game tonight, so we’ll do our best to keep you all updated as the match progresses. Go out and have fun tonight, Sharks, but remember not to get hurt. That is the golden rule for tonight.

  • oh well whilst in agreement with you on principle one must also not panic too much about injuries. it is a contact sport after all and that’s why you have a squad and not just individuals.

I hope he cant read Afrikaans.
Die Burger carried an article on him on Friday, something to the tune of ‘Sharks to release giant on Stormers” calling him a Lomu. It made for some impressive reading.

  • i don’t think we have to worry about anything. the sharks are professional enough to look after themselves. the only guys we need to worry about are the younsters in the team that want to force there way into the squad. But the super 15 is a long tournament most if not all these players will get a run. no team is going to make it with 22 players.

Looks like he’s probably going to settle on Adonga, which means I should probably start calling him that.

  • A warm-up game is there to determine whether or not certain combo’s will work together. I really don’t understand why you would risk all you “key” players in these warm up games. Hopefully they will only play in the first half before the replacements come on.

  • @Farlington (Comment 20) : because there are new combinations in the top players that need to be seen. john smit back, ross and hargreaves together, pat to meyer to stefan. jp back after a long break. all these players need to get a feel for eachother again, then during the game change a few more to see how the new combinations effect the momentum. no point being 30 points up against the cheetahs in the first game, throw on a new player that doesn’t combine well with players around him and a huge hole in defence is opened and we lose the game. the players need to be comfortable with all the players around them, and that comes with gametime.

  • the bulls learnt little in their warm up game on saturday, because brummer wasn’t played with fdp inside him. the props looked poor, but with matfield and bakkies they might scrummed better. you need to try out the new guys in the matchday setup, not in the sharks xv setup.

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : Thanks. If I was his agent I’d suggest he stick with Oijambo! He can’t really be likened to Lomu but he has got explosive speed. I think I’d compare him more to a Radike Samo back in his first season with the Brumbies. I pretty much expect the Lions to pay a dear price if they give him ½ a metre of space, so it’s how he plays when he doesn’t have the ball that’s going to be worth finding out – stuff like his tackling, his defensive awareness, supporting the ball carrier, clearing out, workrate etc. etc.
