Sharks will be forced into changes

I’m not sure what John Plumtree’s selection strategy was going to be for the warm-up game against the Stormers this weekend, but a number of injuries resulting from last night’s game against the Lions will force his hand to some extent.

Most serious of the knocks picked up is the lower-back injury sustained by Bok lock Alistair Hargreaves, rumoured to be a slipped disc. The former SA Under 19 skipper was stretchered off the field in the first half and is understood to still be in hospital, awaiting a prognosis on the extent of the damage. Early indications are far from encouraging, with a lengthy spell on the sidelines anticipated for Plumtree’s first-choice number 5. Adding insult to injury (or is that injury to further injury) is the broken finger sustained by the other starting lock, Ross Skeate. The former Stormers man is on a fair bit of pain and we would imagine that he’ll now be in a race against time to get fit for the Sharks Antipodean tour, which starts in week 3 of the competition.

The Sharks are, of course, already missing Steven Sykes due to a calf injury and are now perilously close to the sort of “lock crisis” that had tongues wagging last year, when Gerhard Mostert and Johann Muller both picked up injuries in the opening game. Mostert will start against the Stormers alongside Anton Bresler, a player who Plumtree has always rated due to his physicality, pace and non-nonsense attitude. The 22-year-old let himself down last night by picking up a yellow card, but will no doubt be keen to make amends this weekend and prove that he has the aptitude for Super Rugby.

Finding a lock replacement for Saturday’s game will be tough, but with Dan Adonga struggling a little at loose forward last night, perhaps the big youngster could be pressed into service as a second-row option if required.

John Smit will play no part in the game, as he’ll be attending long-time friend (and former house mate) Butch James’s wedding. Bismarck du Plessis will hopefully be fit to play some part in the game, but expect Craig Burden to start the match at hooker. The other players to sustain minor injuries, Louis Ludik and Jacques Engelbrecht, should both be fit to play, with the latter hoping to build on a solid 15-minute outing against the Lions. In another bit of good news, utility back Luzuko Vulindlu is expected to join up with the team ahead of Saturday’s match, having recovered from a hamstring injury picked up in last week’s practice match.

  • No doubt the depth will be tested.Perhaps there will come a point where some of the “sloppy seconds” that so thoroughly smacked your Boks last night, would have come in handy.Nah,perhaps not. They are clearly not good enough for your super team!LOL!!

  • Thanks Rob.They are few and far between!Must say i am really happy with Whitely. He’s a good one who i guess was never going to be selected ahead of Kanko.Proof though that not all rejects belong on the scrap heap. Some just need to move to get the oppurtunities. Hope your boys get well soon.

  • @wade (Comment 4) : look – I’ll never hold it against a player who moves to another province to get gametime and despite everything that has happened, I’m really glad to see guys like Warren, Pat and the rest of them succeed.

What really pissed me off earlier in the year was the way you guys were trying to sign our first-choice players after already signing the second-stringers. That, to me, shows remarkably poor faith.

But hey, it’s water under the bridge. The Lions seem to have a good thing going now and the Sharks are going to have to up our game before we meet them again.

Rob – any idea who’s the next lock in line for the Sharks – Jandre Marais :?:

  • @beet (Comment 7) : It’ll be disappointing for Big Vic if he has to play Lock, I’m sure he was hoping to make his mark at flank or 8th Man with the WC around the corner… I guess not as disappointed as Hargreaves is going to be though.

  • @beet (Comment 7) : Wilhelm is at cheetahs…plus i don’t really rate him. Best option would be to use Ojiambo/Adongo at lock…did well for the u/21′s there, plus he is super mobile. 1.96 and 110kg+ not bad for lock. Alberts can also cover lock if needed…hopefully this is good news for Engelbrecht…opens some holes for him the squad. Really hope we get pen to paper concerning Jacques.

  • I feel worried now about our Lock situation. Game cost us huge last night with injuries. Something we all hoped would not happen. Least of all to one of our top players in Hargreaves. A broken finger takes about 4 maybe 6 weeks to heal. So Skeate will be out for the Cheetahs and Blues game. Now just hope we have no injuries on Saturday.

Pleased to read that Zuks will join up with the team, should have been there anyhow.

How is Ludik? Hope he is totally over that ankle injury otherwise not worth the risk to play him on Saturday. Rather have him ready for the Cheetahs game.

Hope we work on our defence, we must have been shocking in defence last night. Also our discipline needs to be a lot better.

Rob, yeah I also thought of Dan to shift to play Lock.

Anyhow all the best to Hargreaves, a slipped disc is bloody painful. I know I have a slipped disc in my lower back. I just have had traction a few times for it. So hoping that all he needs and not a op.

  • @Puma (Comment 18) : Ludik had a haemotoma, which is almost like a bruise, on his thigh I think. He should really be fine for the Cheetahs game but I doubt he’ll play on Saturday to give him some more time to recover.

I know what a haemotoma is, sometimes it takes a few weeks to go as well. So doubt if Ludik will play this Saturday, but he will be ready for the Cheetahs game.

Probably Stefan will start at FB then this Saturday.

  • @JJR (Comment 11) : Sorry I meant Willem (not Wilhelm) Alberts not Steenkamp. Groot Willem could continue to start as blindside and move to lock for the last 20min.
We saw the worst of Wilhelm Steenkamp last year. I think he was a bit demotivated after falling below J.Kruger and Fudge in the Bulls pecking order. I think he believed that he was good enough to challenge F.vd Merwe for a spot last yr. I expect that he’ll show his old form this year + Cheetahs usually have good setpieces and are able to bring out the best in even the most avg locks eg. Corniel van Zyl, David de Villiers,Nico Breedt so it shouldn’t be difficult for Wilhelm to star.
    I guess time will tell.

  • How about this Option:

Stefan, JP, Adi !!, Lambie, Mvovo, JLP, Hoffmann, Vleis ( swd option ), Adongo, Alberts, Mosterd, Botes ( needs game time ), Jannie, Burden, Van Staden.

Then send on the rest with 10 minutes to go: Smit, Bissy, Beast, Bressler, Kankow, McLeod, Lindeque, Odwa, Richards and Vulindlu

Smit and Bissy to get 10 min each in the second half.
On second thought, Alberts will be crucial for us . . . send him back to Durban, no need to risk him now.

We’re just saying short term, he’s an option at lock. Right now we are down to our last 2 specialists, after that we don’t have a specialist with experience.
