John Plumtree has named a strong Sharks team to take on the Stormers in the final Neo Africa Tri-Series match, kicking off at 5pm on Saturday at DHL Newlands. Stefan Terblanche will captain the side, from which John Smit is missing.

The regular skipper has been given leave to attend good mate Butch James’s wedding – in fact, the Sharks arguably got the better deal here, since the Stormers will be missing two of their key men, Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers, for the same reason. Bismarck du Plessis has been named to start at hooker, but has been bracketed with Craig Burden, since he’s still carrying a bit of a shoulder problem as a result of a farming accident. Should du Plessis not be deemed fit enough to start, Burden will run out in the number 2 and probably play virtually all of the match. Either way, don’t count on more that half an hour from Bismarck at the very most. Brother Jannie and Beast Mtawarira continue as the props, with the versatile Eugene van Staden providing cover off the woodwork.

Injuries to Ross Skeate (finger) and Alistair Hargreaves (back) have forced Plumtree to pick a brand new lock partnership, with former Lion Gerhard Mostert joining young Anton Bresler in the second row. The unchanged loose trio of Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowksi leaves the relatively inexperienced duo of Dan Adonga and Vleis Engelbrecht to cover the second and back rows off the bench. It’s something of a blessing in disguise, I would say, since both players will now enjoy an extended run out and a chance to impress the coach.

Louis Ludik is missing – thanks to a knock to the thigh against the Lions – and a back three reshuffle sees Odwa Ndungane take over in the number 15 shirt, one which many pundits feel may well be most suited to him these days. Lwazi Mvovo comes in to partner JP Pietersen at wing, while the centre combination of Terblanche and Meyer Bosman is left unchanged. Pat Lambie and Charl McLeod are retained at flyhalf and scrumhalf respectively and it’s been a long time since the Sharks have been able to name an all-Springbok backline, even though McLeod has not been capped at Test level.

Zuks Vulindlu unfortunately didn’t recover sufficiently from his hamstring strain to make the trip down to Cape Town, but the Sharks still have more than enough backline cover on an enlarged bench that includes Conrad Hoffman, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Adrian Jacobs, Riaan Swanepoel and speedster Mark Richards.

Sharks v Stormers:
15. Odwa Ndungane
14. JP Pietersen
13. Stefan Terblanche (Capt)
12. Meyer Bosman
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Patrick Lambie
9. Charl McLeod
8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Willem Alberts
6. Jacques Botes
5. Gerhard Mostert
4. Anton Bresler
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. Bismarck du Plessis / Craig Burden
1. Tendai Mtawarira
Replacements
16. Craig Burden / Bismarck du Plessis
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Jacques Engelbrecht
19. Daniel Adonga
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
22. Adrian Jacobs
23. Riaan Swanepoel
24. Mark Richards

  • Strong line up. However, I would love to see a bit more pace in the midfield. For the last two season, Sharks have relied on slow, bulky and aging midfield combo. Stefan has been a great servant to the union, but the coach needs to think about the low strike rate in the Sharks.

  • As the risk of sounding disloyal, I’m really looking forward to watching van Aswegen, Sadie and Wimpie in action tomorrow. I also hope Daniel OA can up his game from the other night and show Sharks fans some skills to get excited about.

Looking forward to seeing this game.

  • I actually seriously like the look of this back 3… I’m quite happy for Odwa to be the 3rd wing/2nd fullback in the squad… he’s gonna get plenty game time across both positions. Let’s leave Pat to concentrate solely on flyhalf

  • While I’m a little unsure of his kicking game, and while he’s probably a bit lacking in the pace department (a criticism that could be levelled at the majority of our backline players), I really rate Odwa’s playmaking-, positioning- and linking abilities; he has the knack for showing up in the right place at the right time, and making the right decisions. Personally, I think Odwa at fullback may yet turn out to be one of the year’s big success stories.

Just hope Tuesday night was the mother of all hustles, and that the Stormers who are attending Bitch James’ nuptials are going to wish they stayed home instead. (If u ask me Schalk is scared of another embarrassing hand-off!)

  • It really isnt a big surprise to see Odwa at fb as he has played there before for the Sharks during the Currie Cup a few seasons ago. If im not mistaken it was his form at fb that made everyone take notice and say he should be in the Bok reckoning.
He seems a lot more intelligent player now and his boot is fairly decent.
I would have given JLP a run at fh this game. It just seems as though Lambie is starting to become “untouchable” in terms of dropping him. JLP is a very good player and I would have liked each of them to have got a good run at fh in the preseason games.
But hey Plum has his own ideas and he will be judged accordingly.
Win or lose on sat, ill still be at Mr Price Kings Park come the first game!

Lambie just wants to be on the field but I think he is starting to realize that his best position is 10.

But I believe that it is more difficult to find a great flyhalf than a great fullback (and we already have a great fullback in Ludik)
