Sharks 2011 Season, a Crystal Ball approach

Super Rugby is almost upon us, only two more agonising weeks to go but chin up, we have lots to look forward to this year!

I`m not going to re-hash the Neo Africa warm up laps here. Yes we came stone last but we have positives and negatives to take from it. Plumtree could just be the most professional coach in SA today, he`ll know what to make of their Cape Town sojourn.

So here is my humble opinion of what we can expect from this year :

In round one we host our bogey side the Cheetahs who had a good result against the EP Kings. Their problems are well documented, mainly a lack of depth in most positions. This being the first match of the season, that won`t really come into play.
If the sharks showed us anything in this Neo Africa series it is that we`ve got the right forwards for this competition and this is exactly where we`ll take them on. Yes Coenie and WP should hold their own and they should compete well in the loose with Brussouw and the best 7 in the country but that is all they`ve got. Also bear in mind, we have a proud record in Durban to uphold. We will grind out a result here to start us off with a win.

The Blues will visit our stadium next and they shouldn`t be a that big a threat in Durban. Result number two and suddenly we`re on a bit of a roll before our tour starts.
Our first match on tour is against the Force in Perth. Our guys are still relatively fresh, it`s the first week on tour, motivation is high and there should be some local support for the sharks as well. If we`re serious about a successful super 15, we should take the 4 points on offer here.

But wait it gets better, now we`re on a high, Sharks undefeated going into round four! The Rebels are an unknown factor. Yes they`ve invested heavily and shouldn`t be complete pushovers but seriously, in their first season of super rugby the sharks should use their experience to overcome these newbie’s.

Now the series heats up for us. Sitting pretty on the log, halfway through our tour and the first real tester. The Chiefs got a result against us in Durban last year. Yes it was a dubious call by Keith Brown but they still got the win. They will come at us with everything they`ve got. This is our third match on tour, there might be some injury concerns on our part, this could be a difficult one for us, but if we pull this one through our tour is a huge success already.

The Crusaders are our last tour fixture. Yes they usually start slow but I believe in week six they would`ve found some shape. It`s our last match on tour, our guys might have one foot on the plane already. Might be the right time for Plum to pull a rabbit out of the hat here. Field a Wednesday team against them, guard against injuries, test our depth a bit and conserve our big guns for the onslaught back home. The Crusaders should finish on top of the New Zealand log with relative ease, if we “ hide” our big guns from them here we might catch them by surprise come semi final time!

Back home already, the guys saw their families again and now we face the much fancied Stormer side in our back yard. They haven`t got a good record against us in super rugby but they come off a big win over the Force at Newlands so their confidence is up. Another tester for us but our home support should see us through again. Also remember they won the Neo Africa series, they might underestimate us and Plumtree had a real good look at them already.

The Lions are up next, in Durban. Yes they won their last outing against us. They will probably come off a loss against the Reds at home though, almost mid-way through the competition depth will come into play here and we`ll have their number, with relative ease.

There you go, halfway through the competition and we only lost against the Crusaders and possibly the Chiefs. We could quite conceivably find ourselves in second or third spot on the log overall!
This should motivate the squad and the fans for a hugely successful home sprint.

We`ll leave the latter part of the round robin stage prediction for a later stage, but if we want to be around at the business end, we need a much better start than last year. I wrote the script, now follow it to the letter guys!

  • You cant go and play a weaker team just for the sake of anticipating a loss (read Crusaders). That’s like throwing the game. That’s why the Cheetahs suck at Super Rugby. No confidence in themselves.

  • Don’t wanna be pessimistic, but we have lost to the Reds and Force in the past, both of whom is or was considered easy wins at the time. And the Rebels might surprise as all.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 8) : I don’t think you’ve been controversial enough in your Crystal Ball approach. Here at Sharksworld if you want the 100+ hits you should say stuff like:
The game against the Cats will be over as a contest by the 20th minute or
For the Cats game Plum will definitely rest ALL his key players or
The Stormers without the likes of Vermeulen (citing committee suspension) and Januarie (conditioning programme)will be forced to add off the ball to their long list of areas where they don’t offer much resistance.
It also seems like it wouldn’t hurt to mention that when injuries state to mount, Plum turns to Vodacom Cup players like AJ Jacobs.

Seems like they’ve either run out of ammo or become immune to OC’s “friendly fire”. Just thought that if he wanted the extra 60+ hits, he was gonna have to be more imaginative, bring out the big guns and spice things up a bit with his fortune-telling. No harm intended tho.

  • looking at this years fixtures the sharks have no reason to complain. they probably have the best fixture list possible. getting out of durban early is a blessing as the humidity kills the sharks expansive game. then they go eastward slowly meaning less time is wasted in planes and travel sickness is less intense. they also play the easier teams first getting more intense as the tour progresses. then after a must win crusaders game they are back home for points building time. this is the sharks best chance at world domination, hopefully they take the opportunity with both hands.

  • i disagree with original on taking the foot off the gas against the crusaders. it is vital that the sharks beat both the crusaders and waratahs as both teams should be vying for top of the overall log and automatic home semi. we cannot let them get easy points that will put us in a away playoff situation. so waratahs, bulls, crusaders and hurricanes are must win games.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 49) : It’s probably higher. McCaw, like Smit, has a huge effect on the teams he leads and they’re going to feel it. If Carter drops out as well, the Crusaders will be vulnerable.

I also think that our run into the final in 2007 was built on the belief we had in ourselves after we managed to come back from behind in the last few moments and beat the Crusaders. If we can knock them over in their own backyard, it’ll be monumental for our confidence and our campaign.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 70) : in nz the union holds the players contracts so they have a say. in sa the unions do and they want to get maximum out of their players. but it will be interesting. sharks are lucky as the bok front row can be rested. it is the bull stormers and free state players that are going to get burnt out.

  • @try time (Comment 72) : actually i am talking nonsense, the boks also have contracts with a core group of players. but still don’t have as much say as nzru has over its players.

Judging by the comments here and my new knowledge of the our refs for these matches I should have said ” SHARKS 2011 IN THE EYE OF SAURON”
