Stormers named for Boland warmup

Stormers coach Alistair Coetzee has named an interesting lineup for this weekend’s final warmup game against Boland, with the selection of Elgar Watts (ahead of Lionel Cronje) at flyhalf the one most likely to get the tongues wagging.

The team shows a fair few changes to the unit that narrowly beat the Sharks on Saturday, with stalwarts Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers returning to the side after missing out over the weekend. Tim Whitehead joins de Villiers in the centres, leaving Paul Bosch on the bench and Juan de Jongh on the sidelines. The first choice wingers, Bryan Habana and Gio Aplon are also omitted from this understrength backline, although Ricky Januarie and Conrad Jantjes have both been retained.

Up front, Rynhardt Elstadt moves into the second row after playing at flank against the Sharks, while CJ van der Linde moves to his favourite position of tighthead prop, after wearing the number 1 jersey against the Sharks. There’s a welcome return to the side for number 8 Nick Koster, who has had a nightmare run with injuries over the last few years and has also had to suffer an ill-fated attempt to turn him into a wing.

Stormers:
15. Conrad Jantjes 14. Danie Poolman 13. Tim Whitehead 12. Jean De Villiers 11. JJ Engelbrecht 10. Elgar Watts 9. Ricky Januarie 8. Nick Koster 7. Pieter Louw 6. Schalk Burger (Capt) 5. De Kock Steenkamp 4. Ryhnardt Elstadt 3. CJ Van Der Linde 2. Tiaan Liebenberg 1. Wicus Blaauw

Reserves:16. Siyabonga Ntubeni 17. Steven Kitshoff 18. Frans Malherbe 19. Adriaan Fondse 20. Quinn Roux 21. Francois Louw 22. Ruan Kitshoff 23. Siya Kolisi 24. Nic Groom 25. Lionel Cronje 26. Paul Bosch 27. Johann Sadie

  • Nick Koster returns….for how long though?? I really hope this kid can stay injury free for a while so I can see what all the fuss was about!

  • After seeing all CJs off the ball crap on Saturday I wish he would move into retirement.

Glad to see Siya Kolisi back in the squad, I want that youngster to get some more game time, Tim Whitehead is lightyears ahead of Paul Bosch, Bosch just weighs a bit more.

  • how many of the cast of 1000s that Coetzee likes to pick are actually contracted to WP? Surely they can’t afford to pay quite this many guys?

  • I thought Elstadt played very well with ball in hand against the Sharks – good speed and ball skills. I looked at his stats – he’s 1.98m tall so if he can jump and put in a decent effort in the scrums, SA rugby could have quite a good 2nd row player in the making.

Deep down I can tell you that WP and Stormers supporters are absolutely broken by the fact that they don’t have the shiny Currie Cup in their cabinet at Newlands.

How we would have loved to be in the Sharks shoes right now, and swop their cabinet with ours.

I mean just imagine if we could have done that?

A cup, which even the Cheetahs have managed to win in the last 3 or 4 times in the last 6 years next to the Varsity Cup.

Oh wait, Natal does not have a team that competes in that competition they are down in the Shield section…

Imagine… to have that Cup next to the U/19 Currie Cup trophy. Oh wait, that is not in there either.

Imagine… to have the Cup next to the U/21 Currie Cup trophy. Ooops, my mistake.

Imagine… to have the Cup next to the runners up Super 14 medals. Damn…

Imagine… to have the Cup next to the invitational Tri-series cup. Uhm…

    This does not make sense…

Why would WP want to invent another meaningless Cup?

I mean, given the space, the Sharks should rather create a trophy between them and their Super rugby member unions… oh wait, they can’t, they don’t have any…

I guess WP will have to scrap this idea of meaningless cups, where teams play one another without their first choice players for much of the tournament, or the competition or matches are too lobsided to even imagine that Cup meaning anything.

I mean what is the point of having a cup in your cabinet on display in which the competition for that Cup is meaningless ,the competition watered down which makes an absolute mockery of what a Cup really stands for and means other than for their fans?

I suppose it does serve as a sense of self-worth to any union’s fans, to keep them coming back and fill the stadiums year after year, or at least fill those stadiums to 50% capacity in important matches when the business end of these rather meaningless cup semi’s come along. I mean as long as the fans believe that Cup actually means something, the union can at least bargain on 50% capacity in the play-offs.

Because there is absolutely no way any union can hope to attract fans week after week filling a 50 000 seater stadium with 40 000 odd supporters if they do not create these meaningless cups can they?

Somewhere along the line there has to be a Cup won to incentivize fans!

So yes, we are broken as fans.

How I would love to see Newlands packed week in and week out for home games… You cannot buy loyalty like that in today’s age with the professional game.

I wish we could invent a real meaningless cup like you okes have to see that again.

  • Hey I’ve only seen this response now.

    Let ME respond.

Doesn’t Maties fall under Boland? Therefore the Varsity trophy would be in the Boland cabinet. UCT is the WP team in the Varsity cup isn’t it.

Or do they both fall under WP? What better way to ensure you get trophies
    1) Enter 2 teams in the comp and double your chances.
    2) Play a S15 side versus a 1st Div CC side and get a trophy for the comp.
