The referees for the opening rounds have been announced and as usual the top SA refs are used for non SA games.

I have to question the wisdom and financial impact of flying top SA referee Mark Lawrence to Australia to officiate in an Aussie derby and flying a referee from the ARU, Steve Walsh, to South Africa to referee a South african derby.

South Africa have produced four of the top referees who officiate in the SupeRugby tournament yet we don’t get the benefit of this becasue the wealth has to be spread around thus leaving some SA teams to suck the hindtit with below par Kiwi and Aus referees. The Sharks have once again got Keith Brown, thankfully there has been no sign of Paul Marks.

Bryce Lawrence who had a very good ITM Cup season is rewarded with the opening game of the tournament.

Referee: Pro Legoete (South Africa)

NOT a Super Rugby level referee. so let him ref an all important conference game. :?: :?: :?:

How many top level games has he had after being dropped from the S14 panel last year after his attrocious display in Durban?

And the WAY superior Jason Jaftha has to run touch??????????????

  • My main concern is biased refs. U should not ref a game where your country is involved against another country, even at provincial level.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 3) :

I am also against that to a certain extent. An NZ/SA/Aus ref might over compensate and be stricter on the NZ/SA/Aus team he is reffing for fear of being accused of bias.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 4) :

There’s a term for that sort of behaviour. mostly small people who have it.

he is a good guy, but I am not keen on his reffing, he seems to take things very personally and become “short” and abrupt with players who commit offences as if they commited them against him personally.

  • ooooooh fwak! there goes the sharks chances at a great start. steve walsh twice and keith clown. talk about using refs to even out teams strengths. all 3 of these games the sharks should easily win, but these refs could change all that.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 8) : are you being sarcastic? last year some other team was complaining about his shocking refereeing. was it england? it was about a penalty try or try that shouldn’t have been let me see.

  • Week 1 and 4 weve got Steve Walsh and James Leckie running touch. Isnt James Leckie the guy that screwed us over somewhere last year? and dont get me started on Walsh!!

  • he admitted getting it wrong in the bulls sharks 2007 final. last year he admits he got it wrong in the waratahs brumbies game. and was even pulled from reffing the next game. so i’ll put walsh on the dodgy list.

  • Everytime I look at this list I notice another hurdle for us.

Walsh in the FS match shouldn`t be too much of a problem, unless he know FS shouldn`t be a factor later on in the competition he better help them out now and hold us back from the get go . . .

By the time we meet the Rebels he`ll be in top form so we`re gonna have to start John Smit, maybe he`ll demand some respect from Walsh?

We also have Pro Legoete for the Stormers match. He is definately for the Afrikaans sides . . . might be all they need to slip past us.

To summerize, the referee`s have to potential to take us out of this super 15 all on their own.
