Vodacom Cup woes for defending champs

The Sharks XV kick off their Vodacom Cup campaign against the Blue Bulls in Durban next Saturday. While the side from Pretoria, as defending champions, are always tough to beat, a few factors might just play into the local lads’ hands this time around.

Needless to say, the defection of coach Nico Serfontein to the Lions a month ago has left the Bulls’ usually-solid junior ranks in a bit of disarray. The fact that Commercial Director Ian Schwartz has been off ill hasn’t helped matters either and the usually smooth-sailing ship that is lower-level Bulls rugby seems to have veered alarmingly off course in recent weeks. It started with an understrength Bulls Super Rugby team (the Vodacom Cup side in all but name) suffering an embarrassing 7-23 defeat to the Southern Kings a few weeks ago and has seemingly continued as the Vodacom Cup side proper went down 12-17 to Namibia this weekend.

The Blue Bulls have yet to confirm a replacement for Serfontein and the side is being looked after by Denzil Frans in a caretaker capacity. To add further to their woes, regular captain Gerrit-Jan van Velze suffered an injury this weekend which looks likely to keep him out of action for the opening weeks of the campaign.

For Sean Everitt and his Sharks XV squad, the fact that the Bulls will travel to Kings Park without either their regular coach or captain, means that there has to be a seriously good chance of toppling them and claiming a vital opening win in the Vodacom Cup. The match serves as a curtain-raiser to the second round Super Rugby clash between the Sharks and the Blues and as such should hopefully attract a strong – and partisan – home crowd to support the boys in white and black.
