No shocks as Sharks name their squad

The official 30-man Super Rugby squad has been named by Sharks coach John Plumtree.

It’s a fairly predictable unit, with prop Sabelo Nhlapo and lock Anton Bresler the only real newcomers. There’s depth aplenty and it is unlikely that the coaches will need to look outside of this squad for the time being. John Smit and Stefan Terblanche have been named as captain and vice captain respectively. Aside from the two youngster already named, only a handful of players – Conrad Hoffman, Meyer Bosman, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Ross Skeate and Eugene van Staden – were not part of the Super 14 squad last year.

Of the 30 players named, only Skeate and Jean Deysel are confirmed as unavailable for the opening match this weekend, while there is also some doubt as to whether JP Pietersen will be able to play. Skeate should be fit in time for the second-round match against the Blues in Durban, while Deysel will only return once the Sharks have arrived back in South Africa in week 7.

Here is the 30-man squad, as named on Sharksrugby.co.za a little while ago.

1. Willem Alberts
2. Meyer Bosman
3. Jacques Botes
4. Anton Bresler
5. Craig Burden
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Jean Deysel
8. Bismarck du Plessis
9. Jannie du Plessis
10. Alistair Hargreaves
11. Conrad Hoffmann
12. Adrian Jacobs
13. Ryan Kankowski
14. Patrick Lambie
15. Louis Ludik
16. Charl McLeod
17. Gerhard Mostert
18. Tendai Mtawarira
19. Lwazi Mvovo
20. Odwa Ndungane
21. Sabelo Nhlapo
22. JP Pietersen
23. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
24. Ross Skeate
25. John Smit
26. Riaan Swanepoel
27. Steven Sykes
28. Stefan Terblanche
29. Eugene van Staden
30. Luzuko Vulindlu

  • @rekinek (Comment 2) : he is – and there is no third scrummie named.

I feel that’s a mistake. They’re going to have to take Cronje on tour.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 5) : ja, agree… but it will be more of a surprise when players from outside of this squad are named in the tour group :)

if you’re only going to take 28 players on tour, you simply have to have 3 hookers and 3 scrummies.

Sharks are lucky that John allows them to use him as both hooker and prop, meaning Nhlapo will probably miss out.

I also reckon that either Bresler or Skeate (depending on fitness) will miss out on the tour… no way they’ll take 5 locks.

So that leaves a squad of 28 with no backup scrummie. That means someone… possibly Zuks… will miss out in favour of Cronje.

  • @rekinek (Comment 7) : we are faaar too quick to write them off. I remember watching Guy in the Currie Cup two years ago and thinking he played bloody well. I would have actually been quite all right with us NOT buying Hoffman and letting Ross and Cobus duke it out for the backup scrummie spot.

As for flyhalf, well… Guy is very unlucky, in that we have two phenomenally talented young men in Pat and Fred Z coming through the system at the same time he is.

My gut feel is that Guy will leave to join the Bulls or WP.

  • @rekinek (Comment 9) : his early-season form has not been inspiring. I’d almost be tempted to let Ross or Cobus sit on the Super Rugby bench and let Conrad play himself in via the Vodacom Cup.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : Ross went on tour in 2009 to carry the bags mainly and then suddenly sent back to vodacom cup next year. bit weird though considering that at the time both pienaar and kockott were in – i guess it was difficult to get through but i got the impression that he really fallen out of favour.

as to guy Sharks are usually thin on flyhalves so i guess letting him go would not be a good idea. Pat will need cover considering the length of the season plus he would be hoping to make Boks.
I know we have JLP now (not that happy about him but I guess he will bring experience to the position) but we will need more cover.

Don’t know anything about Fred though.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 16) : it’s not even like we have the luxury of another player who could be a makeshift scrummie, like the Lions do in Doppies. There is nobody else in the squad who could play there.

Other than Keegan Daniel, cos he has the skills to play anywhere.

  • @Crock (Comment 23) : In the case of a tour ending injury, will SANZAR pay to fly out the replacement? If not, how can they stop a team from bringing any players they want along on tour. Surely they can just choose their match 22s from the 26 approved players on tour, while the others train and carry tackle bags. Just not sure how SANZAR can prevent a team from flying out their own support personnel.

  • This SANZAR limitation of 26 players seems a bit unfair. SA sides have to tour for 4 games. NZ&A teams come to Africa for 2 games – when they play each other they can fly home straight after the final whistle – 26 isn’t a problem for them. This can’t be right.

I’m bracing myself for a start-stop game with many early season handling errors, which could suit the Cheetahs coz they’re usual good at the setpiece. If the overall standard of play is above this expectation I’ll be thrilled. But an ugly win without a bonus would make my evening.

Here in Feb the overcast brings with it far higher humidity. Not sure if it will be cooler either cause if the overcast, but if there is rain about it will cool it down a wee bit. Feb here in Durbs is just bloody hot..hahaha.

Othen though the weather forecast is wrong. Either way it will be humid. Tough to play in these conditions.
