Coach John Plumtree has named his squad to play the Cheetahs on Saturday evening, and it looks very similar to a team that our own Rob Otto predicted a few days ago.

Captain John Smit slots into the loosehead role and packs down next to the du Plessis brothers in the front row. Steven Sykes and Al Hargreaves both make comebacks from injury to start the Super Rugby season. The loosies combo of Botes, Alberts and Kankowski is both bulky and pacey at the same time.

The Currie Cup winning halfback pairing of McLeod and Lambie continue with debutant Meyer Bosman playing in the inside centre. Currie Cup captain Stefan Terblanche slots in at 13 to make an experienced midfield combination.

The back three sees Mvovo and Ndungane on the wings and Ludik at fullback. JP Pietersen not being able to play through an injury. The bench is made up of the experienced Beast Mtawarira, Eugene van Staden, Anton Bresler and Keegan Daniel for the forwards, and new acquisition Conrad Hoffmann and JL Potgieter joining Adi Jacobs as the backline reserves.

The Sharks:

15. Louis Ludik
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Stefan Terblanche
12. Meyer Bosman
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Patrick Lambie
9. Charl McLeod
8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Willem Alberts
6. Jacques Botes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
4. Steven Sykes
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. Bismarck du Plessis
1. John Smit (C)

Replacements
16. Tendai Mtawarira
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Anton Bresler
19. Keegan Daniel
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
22. Adrian Jacobs

  • Most interesting selection is Botes ahead of Daniel. In my mind it’s a combination of the need for more of a fetcher and Keegs recently struggling with injury.

I like Botes in the team.. between him and Bismarck we have two very good ball protectors and fetchers..

Keegan will always make an impact off the bench, whether he comes on for Kanko, Botes or Alberts

  • At last, some decent rugby to look forward to. Rugby in the UK is missing some vital ingredients – skill and entertainment being two examples – which makes it a pain to watch. I am expecting a lot now, though there will be the usual rusty moments. And it promises to be a long, hard struggle this year. But I am overtly confident of some marvelous results from The Sharks which will have me pining for the sunny shores of SA again.

Important to note my follow up comment, it will be fine against the Cheetahs, but I would change that soon.

I don’t think how much momentum Keegan gives you okes and puts you on the front foot, hybrid loosies is the ish under the current laws.

  • Stef should be fine against the Cheetahs, but not against the top teams.

A modern 13 must be an attacking threat, and Stef is not; his defence is good, strong in the tackle and has good hands, but he is not going to cause any jitters. Much better at 15.

Other than that, this is a very good team.

Oupa Stef is vital for the Sharks, but I would play him at 15 more often than not.

You cannot tell me he is a better 13 than Adi.

Controlling things at the back when teams will kick more (given the refs were instructed to bring the penalties between attacking and defending teams down to 50/50 from 80/20 last year) I think Stef must go back, and Ludick is a great strike runner and can be easily and effectively used on wing.

Odwa able and valuable from the bench covering wing and 15
