With Super Rugby FINALLY set to return to our screens on Friday morning, let’s have a look at the Round 1 match-ups and see if we can pick the winners. This thread will be updated with all the team sheets as they are confirmed.

HURRICANES vs HIGHLANDERS, WELLINGTON, FRI 08:35

An all-New Zealand clash gets things going on Friday morning and this game will provide a good opportunity for the winner to set an early marker. While the Highlanders are always competitive against their countrymen, there’s simply no comparison between the two teams on paper and the fact that the Canes are playing at home to boot, means that they should walk this one. Go with the Hurricanes by 10 or so.

Hurricanes – 15 Cory Jane, 14 Julian Savea, 13 Conrad Smith, 12 Ma’a Nonu, 11 Hosea Gear, 10 Aaron Cruden, 9 Tyson Keats, 8 Victor Vito, 7 Jack Lam, 6 Mark Reddish, 5 Jason Eaton, 4 James Broadhurst, 3 Michael Bent, 2 Andrew Hore (capt), 1 John Schwalger.
Subs: 16 Dane Coles, 17 Neemia Tialata, 18 Faifili Levave, 19 Serge Lilo, 20 Chris Eaton, 21 Daniel Kirkpatrick, 22 Andre Taylor.

Highlanders – 15 Ben Smith, 14 James Paterson, 13 Kendrick Lynn, 12 Shaun Treeby, 11 Kade Poki, 10 Lima Sopoaga, 9 Jimmy Cowan, 8 Nasi Manu, 7 Alando Soakai, 6 Adam Thomson, 5 Josh Berkhuis, 4 Jarrad Hoeata, 3 David Te Moana, 2 Jason Rutledge, 1 Jami Mackintosh (capt).
Subs: 16 Brayden Mitchell, 17 Bronson Murray, 18 Joe Tuineau, 19 John Hardie, 20 Aaron Smith, 21 Robbie Robinson, 22 Siale Piutau.

REBELS VS WARTAHS, MELBOURNE, FRI 10:40

Next up on Friday is the opening game in the Aussie conference, with perennial runners-up the Waratahs heading to Melbourne to face new boys the Rebels. While Rod MacQueen’s side looks ok on paper and were encouragingly good in pre-season, I simply cannot believe that they will have gelled sufficiently as a team at this stage of the season for a win over the settled Waratahs to be a possibility. Aussie derbies tend to be scrappy affairs and the presence of old heads like Sterling Mortlock in the Rebels side will prevent a rout, but the Waratahs should take this one, by around 7.

Rebels – 15 Julian Huxley, 14 Lachlan Mitchell, 13 Stirling Mortlock (capt), 12 Cooper Vuna, 11 Luke Rooney, 10 James Hilgendorf, 9 Sam Cordingley, 8 Gareth Delve, 7 Michael Lipman, 6 Hoani Macdonald, 5 Kevin O’Neill, 4 Adam Byrnes, 3 Greg Somerville, 2 Ged Robinson, 1 Nic Henderson.
Subs: 16 Heath Tessmann, 17 Laurie Weeks, 18 Alister Campbell, 19 Jarrod Saffy, 20 Nick Phipps, 21 Danny Cipriani, 22 Afusipa Taumoepeau.

Waratahs – 15 Kurtley Beale, 14 Lachie Turner, 13 Rob Horne, 12 Tom Carter, 11 Drew Mitchell, 10 Berrick Barnes, 9 Luke Burgess, 8 Ben Mowen, 7 Phil Waugh (capt), 6 Dave Dennis, 5 Kane Douglas, 4 Dean Mumm, 3 Al Baxter, 2 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 1 Sekope Kepu.
Subs: 16 Damien Fitzpatrick, 17 Benn Robinson, 18 Sitaleki Timani, 19 Chris Alcock, 20 Brendan McKibbin, 21 Daniel Halangahu, 22 Ryan Cross.

BLUES vs CRUSADERS, AUCKLAND, SAT 08:35

There are two factors making this game interesting – one being the fact that New Zealand derbies are always hard to call and the other being that the mighty Crusaders are without inspirational captain Richie McCaw. While it’s tough to call, history will show that the Saders often build up a head of steam slowly in Super Rugby, whereas the Blues tend to explode out of the starting blocks, only to fall off later in the race. I sense an upset here and I reckon the Blues are going to win by about 5 points.

Blues – 15 Isaia Toeava, 14 Joe Rokocoko, 13 Jared Payne, 12 Benson Stanley, 11 Rene Ranger, 10 Stephen Brett, 9 Alby Mathewson, 8 Chris Lowrey, 7 Daniel Braid, 6 Jerome Kaino, 5 Ali Williams, 4 Anthony Boric, 3 John Afoa, 2 Keven Mealamu (capt), 1 Tony Woodcock.
Subs: 16 Tom McCartney/Ash Dixon, 17 Charlie Faumuina, 18 Filo Paulo, 19 Luke Braid, 20 Toby Morland, 21 Lachie Munro, 22 Sherwin Stowers.

Crusaders – 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Adam Whitelock, 11 Tu Umaga-Marshall, 10 Daniel Carter, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Kieran Read (capt), 7 Matt Todd, 6 George Whitelock, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Brad Thorn, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Wyatt Crockett. Subs: 16 Francis Smith, 17 Ben Franks, 18 Chris Jack, 19 Jonathan Poff, 20 Willi Heinz, 21 Matt Berquist, 22 Tom Marshall/Tyler Bleyendaal.

BRUMBIES vs CHIEFS, CANBERRA, SAT 10:40

The only cross-conference game of the first round and this one is pretty difficult to call. The Chiefs are a good side, but they don’t look like being among the best that New Zealand has to offer, whilst the Brumbies are a useful outfit themselves. With a game as close as this one, the smart money has got to be on the home side, so I reckon Brumbies by 7 (but not with a huge amount of confidence!)

Brumbies – 15 Pat McCabe, 14 Henry Speight, 13 Adam Ashley-Cooper, 12 Robbie Coleman, 11 Francis Fainifo, 10 Matt Giteau (capt), 9 Josh Valentine, 8 Ita Vaea, 7 Julian Salvi, 6 Mitch Chapman, 5 Mark Chisholm, 4 Ben Hand, 3 Dan Palmer, 2 Steve Moore, 1 Ben Alexander.
Subs: 16 Huia Edmonds, 17 Salesi Ma’afu, 18 Stephen Hoiles, 19 Colby Faingaa, 20 Patrick Phibbs, 21 Matt Toomua, 22 Andrew Smith.

Chiefs – 15 Mils Muliaina (capt), 14 Tim Nanai-Williams, 13 Dwayne Sweeney, 12 Tana Umaga,11 Sitiveni Sivivatu, 10 Stephen Donald, 9 Brendon Leonard, 8 Fritz Lee, 7 Tanerau Latimer, 6 Liam Messam, 5 Romana Graham, 4 Craig Clarke, 3 Nathan White, 2 Aled de Malmanche, 1 Ben May.
Subs: 16 Toby Smith, 17 Daniel Perrin, 18 Hayden Triggs, 19 Scott Waldrom, 20 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 21 Jackson Willison, 22 Lelia Masaga.

SHARKS vs CHEETAHS, DURBAN, SAT 17:05

Surely if the Sharks are going to live up to the hype, they must start off with a win against the Cheetahs? We expect the Sharks to name a side that’s a fair bit stronger than their rivals’ on paper, although history has taught us that reputations mean little to the Cheetahs when they play their coastal rivals. The absence of talisman Juan Smith, coupled with two good wins over a similar outif tin the Currie Cup sees me pretty confident in giving this one to the Sharks, by about 10 points.

Sharks – 1. John Smit (Captain), 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 4. Steven Sykes, 5. Alistair Hargreaves, 6. Jacques Botes, 7. Willem Alberts, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 9. Charl McLeod, 10. Patrick Lambie, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 12. Meyer Bosman, 13. Stefan Terblanche, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 15. Louis Ludik.

Replacements: 16. Tendai Mtawarira, 17. Eugene van Staden, 18. Anton Bresler, 19. Keegan Daniel, 20. Conrad Hoffmann, 21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22. Adrian Jacobs.

Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Philip Burger, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Ryno Benjamin, 10 Naas Olivier, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Kabamba Floors, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Frans Viljoen, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Francois Uys, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (cspt), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Waltie Vermeulen, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Riaan Viljoen.

LIONS vs BULLS, JOHANNESBURG, SAT 19:10

This game looks like it could be a real banana skin for the defending Super 14 champions. While it’s the Lions who have played the most impressive rugby – probably of any of the South African franchises – in pre-season, they’ll name a team that has less than a quarter of the number of Super Rugby caps that the Bulls do. That experience has got to count for something and while the Lions will entertain and give a good account of themselves, I reckon beating the Bulls is a bridge too far for them at this stage. Bulls to take it, by around 10.

Lions – 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies la Grange, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Josh Strauss, 6 Derrick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe (capt), 4 George Earle, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Subs: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Kevin Buys, 18 Wikus van Heerden, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Rory Kockott, 21 Burton Francis, 22 James Kamana.

Bulls – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Stephan Dippenaar, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (capt), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Gary Botha, 1 Gurthro Steenkamp.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 Rossouw de Klerk, 18 Danie Rossouw, 19 Derick Kuun, 20 Ruan Snyman, 21 Francois Brummer, 22 Jaco van der Westhuyzen.

REDS vs FORCE, BRISBANE, SUN 08:40

The easiest game of the round, for me. The Reds are a superb team these days, the Force a ragtag bunch of no-hopers who’ll do well to end above the Rebels. Reds to walk it, by 12 or more.

Reds – 15 Peter Hynes, 14 Rod Davies, 13 Will Chambers, 12 Anthony Faingaa, 11 Digby Ioane, 10 Quade Cooper, 9 Will Genia, 8 Leroy Houston, 7 Ed Quirk, 6 James Horwill (capt), 5 Rob Simmons, 4 Van Humphries, 3 James Slipper, 2 Saia Faingaa, 1 Ben Daley.
Subs: 16 James Hanson, 17 Greg Holmes, 18 Scott Higginbotham, 19 Beau Robinson, 20 Ben Lucas, 21 Mike Harris, 22 Aidan Toua.

Force – 1. Pek Cowan, 2. Ben Whittaker, 3. Tim Fairbrother, 4. Ben McCalman, 5. Nathan Sharpe, 6. Matt Hodgson, 7. David Pocock, 8. Richard Brown, 9. Brett Sheehan, 10. James O’Connor, 11. David Smith, 12. Gene Fairbanks, 13. Mitch Inman, 14. Nick Cummins, 15. Cameron Shepherd
Subs:16. Nathan Charles, 17. Kieran Longbottom, 18. Sam Wykes, 19. Tevita Metuisela, 20. James Stannard, 21. Alfie Mafi, 22. Rory Sidey

  • Blues v Saders, Brumbies v Chiefs and Sharks v Cheetahs are the tricky ones imo that could go either way. I think home ground will definitely be the deciding factor.

  • I actually called Blues/Saders the other way on Superbru… made my picks 2 days ago. Now that I think bout it, though, I really do think the Blues will win.

NOT confident at all about a Brumbies victory, though.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 5) : I think they could all go either way, except for Reds-Force. Only one winner there. And Canes-Landers is also likely to be one-way traffic.

  • Blues or Saders? Think that is the toughest pic this week. Went with Saders.

Then how will the Rebels play? That is tricky. Went with Tahs.

Sharks or Cheetahs? Went with our team. Sharks should take it. Hoping.

Lions or Bulls? Bulls should win but think Lions could pip them by 1 or 3. Went with Bulls though.

Brumbies or Chiefs? Tough one this, but went with Brumbies only cause it is on home turf for them.

The rest are more or less easy.

Ja, let it not be said I have any particular problem with the Lions coach or players. I’m a big fan of Mitchell and the way he’s got them going. I just don’t like the guys at the top. And it’s actually just de Klerk and Reynecke. I quite like some of the things Gumede is quoted as saying.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 44) : Unfortunately the ‘fans’ who give the team a bad name are not the same ones who stick with the team in the hard times or even times when a team loses a game or two. Every team has them, and maybe the arrogant Sharks hangers-on needed a couple of pre-season losses to shut them up. Loftus when the Bulls are not doing so well is a fantastic place to watch rugby, no booing, respect to other teams fans an everyone applauding good rugby.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 44) : please don’t go there, Shaz :) Seriously. De la Rey leads to politics and we don’t discuss that here.

  • I’m hoping that the Lions can turn the Bulls over.

The Lions are my so called 2nd team because I’m mates with a few of them. So it’s difficult not to wish them well against everybody but the Sharks.
