Super Rugby 2011: Round 2 preview and predictions

Having managed to gain a small indication of early-season form after the first round, let’s hope our second round predictions prove more accurate! Not that we did too badly in round 1, mind you. Despite our margins being way off in most cases, the Highlaners upset over the Hurricanes was the only result we got wrong. Six from seven is not a terrible way to start.

We’ll update this thread as missing team lineups are announced.

HIGHLANDERS VS CHIEFS, DUNEDIN, FRI 08:35

We start off with another New Zealand Derby in Round 2 and it remains to be seen what impact, if any, the tragedy on Christchurch has on this match. I would imagine it will be played in a sombre mood, with many of the players’ minds elsewhere, as is apt at a time like this. The Highlanders showed that they can grind out a win against opponents with an inferior pack last week and my gut feel is that they will do the same here, playing at their Carisbrook fortress. I’m going with a Highlanders win, by 5 points.

Highlanders – 15. Ben R Smith, 14. James Paterson, 13. Kenny Lynn, 12. Shaun Treeby, 11. Kade Poki, 10. Lima Sopoaga, 9. Jimmy Cowan, 8. Nasi Manu, 7. Alando Soakai, 6. Adam Thomson, 5. Josh Bekhuis, 4. Jarrad Hoeata, 3. David Te Moana, 2. Jason Rutledge, 1. Jamie MacKintosh (Captain)
Subs: 16. Mahonri Schwalger, 17. Bronson Murray, 18. Joe Tuineau, 19. John Hardie, 20. Aaron Smith, 21. Robbie Robinson, 22. Siale Piutau

Chiefs – 15 Mils Muliaina (Captain), 14 Lelia Masaga, 13 Jackson Willison, 12 Dwayne Sweeney, 11 Sitiveni Sivivatu, 10 Mike Delany, 9 Tawera Keer-Barlow, 8 Liam Messam, 7 Tanerau Latimer, 6 Scott Waldrom, 5 Isaac Ross, 4 Hayden Triggs, 3 Nathan White, 2 Aled de Malmanche, 1 Toby Smith.
Subs: 16 Ben May, 17 Daniel Perrin, 18 Culum Retallick, 19 Steven Setephano, 20 Brendon Leonard, 21 Stephen Donald, 22 Tim Nanai-William.

REBELS VS BRUMBIES, MELBOURNE, FRI 10:40

There can only really be one winner here. The Rebels showed last week that they’re well off the pace in this competition, in going down 43-0 to the Waratahs in Melbourne. With a side lacking grunt upfront and looking a wee bit long in the tooth at the back, I simply cannot see how they can reverse the slide against the Brumbies. It’s going to be a long season for the new boys, that’s for sure. Brumbies to win by 20 or more.

Rebels – 15 Mark Gerrard, 14 Lachlan Mitchell, 13 Stirling Mortlock (Captain), 12 Julian Huxley, 11 Cooper Vuna, 10 Danny Cipriani, 9 Nick Phipps, 8 Gareth Delve, 7 Michael Lipman, 6 Jarrod Saffy, 5 Kevin O’Neill, 4 Adam Byrnes, 3 Greg Somerville, 2 Ged Robinson, 1 Nic Henderson.
Subs: 16 Heath Tessman, 17 Laurie Weeks, 18 Alister Campbell, 19 Tom Chamberlin, 20 Richard Kingi, 21 Afusipa Taumoepeau, 22 Luke Rooney.

Brumbies – 15 Pat McCabe, 14 Henry Speight, 13 Adam Ashley-Cooper, 12 Robbie Coleman, 11 Francis Fainifo, 10 Matt Giteau (Captain),9 Josh Valentine, 8 Ita Vaea, 7 Julian Salvi, 6 Mitch Chapman, 5 Mark Chisholm, 4 Ben Hand, 3 Dan Palmer, 2 Steve Moore, 1 Ben Alexander.
Subs: 16 Huia Edmonds, 17 Salesi Ma’afu, 18 Peter Kimlin, 19 Colby Faingaa, 20 Patrick Phibbs, 21 Matt Toomua, 22 Andrew Smith.

CHEETAHS vs BULLS, BLOEMFONTEIN, FRI 19:10

As reported elsewhere, the Cheetahs will be immeasurably stronger now that they have their captain, Juan Smith, back in tow. Will he be enough of a difference to help them turn a 15-point loss against the Sharks into a win against the champion Bulls? On paper, the home side has no hope, with a creaking front row, rookie locks and a flyhalf who doesn’t seem able to get their backline going. Then again, the Cheetahs always raise their game against the Bulls and the champions themselves looked decidedly vulnerable to the high-paced game employed by the Lions in the second half last week. My take is that their is too much experience in this Bulls team to lose to the Cheetahs, though, so I think the Bulls will take it, by around 10 points.

Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Philip Burger, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Rayno Benjamin, 10 Naas Olivier, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Kabamba Floors, 7 Juan Smith (Captain), 6 Frans Viljoen, 5 Waltie Vermeulen, 4 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Francois Uys, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Riaan Viljoen.

Bulls – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Jaco Pretorius, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (Captain), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Gurthro Steenkamp.
Subs: 16 Derick Kuun, 17 Rossouw de Klerk, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Danie Rossouw, 20 Ruan Snyman, 21 Francois Brummer, 22 Stephan Dippenaar.

HURRICANES vs CRUSADERS, WELLINGTON, SAT 08:35

This game has been called off as a sign of respect to those who lose their lives in the Christchurch earthquake this week. It will be scored as a draw, with each side taking two log points.

WARATAHS vs REDS, SYDNEY, SAT 10:40

Ah man, the state of the union match (or whatever they call it)… don’t you just hate trying to call these encounters? It’s true that the Aussie Derbies tend to be even greater levelers than in-conference matches in South Africa or New Zealand and picking a winner between these two sides has always been a lottery, even in the days when the Reds couldn’t buy a win against the blind school. The Queensland boys were off their game against the Force, though and pretty fortunate to sneak a win, whilst the Tahs hit their straps early – and well – against an admittedly woeful Rebels outfit. I’m going to go with the obvious here, and back the home side, by a whisper. Waratahs by five points, but don’t hold me to that!

Waratahs – 15 Kurtley Beale, 14 Lachie Turner, 13 Rob Horne, 12 Tom Carter, 11 Drew Mitchell, 10 Berrick Barnes, 9 Luke Burgess , 8 Ben Mowen, 7 Phil Waugh (Captain), 6 Dave Dennis, 5 Kane Douglas, 4 Dean Mumm, 3 Al Baxter, 2 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 1 Sekope Kepu.
Subs: 16 Damien Fitzpatrick, 17 Benn Robinson, 18 Sitaleki Timani, 19 Chris Alcock, 20 Brendan McKibbin, 21 Daniel Halangahu, 22 Ryan Cross.

Reds – TBC

SHARKS vs BLUES, DURBAN, SAT 17:05

Another tough one to call. The Blues really set the early pace by upsetting the Crusaders, themselves often slow starters in Super Rugby, it must be said. The Sharks were far from perfect, but ultimately comfortable victors against the Cheetahs. In years gone by, the Durbanites have had the upper hand over the Blues, based mostly on forward supremacy and while the Aucklanders have named a side with a very impressive forward complement, I back the Sharks to maintain that dominance. It’s not going to be a day for running rugby and the Sharks should have the defensive game to shut down the dangerous Blues backs, although it is vital to kick less balla way this week. Expect the home loosies to rattle Stephen Brett with some pressure tackles and the Sharks should win, by between 3 and 7 points.

Sharks – TBC

Blues – 15. Isaia Toeava, 14. Joe Rokocoko, 13. Jared Payne, 12. Benson Stanley, 11. Rene Ranger, 10. Stephen Brett, 9. Alby Mathewson, 8. Chris Lowrey, 7. Daniel Braid, 6. Jerome Kaino, 5. Ali Williams, 4. Anthony Boric, 3. John Afoa, 2. Keven Mealamu (Captain), 1. Tony Woodcock
Subs: 16. Tom McCartney, 17. Charlie Faumuina, 18. Kurtis Haiu, 19. Luke Braid, 20. Toby Morland, 21. Luke McAlister, 22. Sherwin Lee Stowers

STORMERS vs LIONS, CAPE TOWN, SAT 19:10

Finally, the Stormers have the chance to gain some log points by actually playing, rather than watching TV! All jokes aside, the home team have named a side lacking in firepower in a number of key positions, flyhalf being the most crucial. The Lions lost badly at Newlands in pre-season but are looking menacing these days and came within a whisker of beating the Bulls. That said, the Stormers have far more experience in players like Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie and also have the gamebreakers needed to pull off that moment of magic which should seal a win. This is going to be edge-of-your-seat stuff, but I’m backing the Stormers to win by about 5 points.

Stormers – 15. Conrad Jantjes, 14. Daniel Johannes George Poolman, 13. Jaque Fourie, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Gary Jacques Van Aswegen, 9. Ricky Januarie, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Francois Louw, 6. Schalk Burger (Captain), 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Rynhardt Elstadt, 3. Brok Harris, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. CJ van der Linde
Subs: 16. Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17. Jozua Malherbe, 18. De Kock Steenkamp, 19. Pieter Louw, 20. Dewaldt Duvenage, 21. Peter Grant, 22. Juan de Jongh

Lions – 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies La Grange, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Josh Strauss, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe (Captain), 4 George Earl, 3 Patrick Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg
Subs: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Kevin Buys, 18 Wikus van Heerden, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Rory Kockott, 21 Burton Francis, 22 James Kamana

The Bulls went to sleep in the 2nd half and even with a dubious try awarded to the Lions and playing at home they still lost.

  • @Talent (Comment 20) : The Lions will be competitive this year indeed, but it is a big call to see them beat The Stormers. I wouldn’t mind them beating them, but its a big call… They do have 80 minutes more than The Stormers, but @ Newlands, hmmmm not so sure, however if the pivot fails then the game opens up… I do like the loose trio of the Lions Josh, Warren, Derrick – and they have that mongrel… The more I type, the more I look forward to this game. I can see why you give The Lions the advantage, but I think The Stormers will take it home.

  • I honestly fail to see why the Lions are being talked up like this.

They have pretty much the same group of players who last season couldn’t win a single super rugby match.

They are playing away from home against a team that finished 2nd last season. A team with largely the same group of players and coaching staff plus a few talented youngsters & one old head added.

A team whom they haven’t managed to beat home or away in super rugby since Noah stepped off the ark.

  • @McLovin (Comment 27) : You make valid points, but this team has the belief they can win, and with that belief they will always be tough opposition, they may not walk away the victors too often, but from a general season point of view, these guys pose a real challenge to all teams… Truth revealed when they go on tour and when their confidence is down…

They have a very technical coach, with Balie Swart and Johan Ackerman up front addressing key issues, and The Jackal (King Carlos) working with the backs, I rate The Lions coaching staff…

They will be competitive this season – they may not win all their games, but they will be competitive.
Divvy had superstars at his disposal and had a dismal year – any team is as good as their coach’s ability to:

    A) Motivate
    B) Manage
    C) Technical Know-How…

  • Chiefs have such a dangerous backline, could they really lose against the lowly Highlanders?
If their handling improves by just a little bit they should have too much out wide.

I compared the Lions side to the Stormers and stormers should edge it, but it probably won`t be a runaway score.
Dickenson will help the Stomers cause, I think they know his interpretations very well by now.

Let me just be clear here ..not a single Lion supporter on this blog is talking their chances up ..

Iv seen this on numerous blogs and its in actual fact other supporters talking them up in the hope to get under stormer supporters skin.

Winning at Newlands is extremely unlikley and I’m hoping for a well structured game and possibly a bonus point will do me fine.

We are a long way off from being a team that beats teams like the Bulls,Stormers and Sharks ..

  • @McLovin (Comment 48) : Ali VS Mitch,
Proudfoot VS Johan Ackerman & Balie Swart, Rob Fleck VS Carlos Spencer – your boon (Stormers) is your defensive coach who has done exceptional work. ITO players at each teams disposal it is obviously no question that The Stormers have better personnel. I don’t foresee Lions beating them, but as I said, generally Lions are a different unit this season. They could do with more stars yes, but there are some stars definitely developing in their loose trio.

The game that they have played puts them in good stead, but I think the Newlands faithful / key players experience will see The Stormers through – the weak link in Stormers set up is first half halfback pairing… If Lions can exploit that, Grant will be on sooner than later and he might not be that sharp… Interesting game.

I don’t think anyone is expecting champagne rugby – but we can play an efficient tidy game… And take it! We need to be certain of our lineout and keep a close eye on Braid / Kaino / Ranger… Defensively I think we are a better unit. SHARKS!

  • That Stormers team certainly doesn’t inspire a huge amount of confidence. Yes, they have a quality centre pairing but they will only come into play if the forwards give them go forward ball. This Lions side is being talked up because they are a LOT fitter than last season, better coached and have some very dangerous runners. My main concern with the Lions is that they play too much rugby, especially close to their own line which sometimes is suicide. They are also still a little too porous ie. defence can be weak ..witness the GVDH try for the Bulls.

However I’m putting my money where my mouth is this week and lumping on the Lions on the handicap!!

Stormers defence a different beast to the Bulls.
The Lions played well because they played a loose game which worked against the less mobile Bulls. Looser rugby is bread and butter for the Stormers boys.

  • @Rahul (Comment 129) : Rob does a good Job with the layouts. :)

I gather you have not seen the update in the rules.

A draw is no longer scored as a win. You have to pick a WINNING team now.

If the match is a draw picks for both teams will be eliminated.

    training wheels are history :)

    YEEEHAAAAAA

The King has returned from an extended recovery after an operation and has given the whole Kingdom the day off on Saturday. (Thu/Fri/Sat) Weekend.

i’ll be seeing MOST of the games. Have to take Aimee to khobar this morning so that she can go and work on a science project with a friend.

Kette will be playing secretary in the passenger (your seat :) ) seat on the way there and back, keeping me up to date.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 113) : Scoring it as a draw with no points scored would have been nice for FL, but the problem is, neither side named a 22… so I have no option but to score it as not played.
