Welcome to the first Windhoek Lager Team of the Week for the Super Rugby season. We have decided to make it an all South African team and base it only on the weekend match. So if your favourite player did not play on the weekend, he will not be in the team.

Thanks must go to Windhoek Lager for sponsoring this weekly Team. We will have a Team of the Year competition at the end of the season, so make sure to take note of certain players who consistently make the team.

So here we go:

1. Beast Mtawarira – Beast was fantastic in the scrums this week, and that against proper opposition. He made sure the Blues scrum was constantly under pressure.

2. Bismarck du Plessis – A strong come back after his rather average start to the season. His line outs were spot on and the he was all over the park.

3. WP Nel – Was great on the day and his presence was missed when he left the field, when the Chetahs scrum went to sleep.

4. Bakkies Botha – Solid performance from the big man, always a pillar in the line outs. Scored a strong try as well.

5. Alistair Hargreaves – He had a really good game in both the line outs and linking up on the run. Consistent in al facets of the game.

6. Derick Minnie – Like most Lions players, had an absolute stormer (pun intended) of a game. Has been in top form for a while now.

7. Willem Alberts – A lot of people will question his inclusion after his try botch-up, but we forget that he played another 79 minutes of normal Willem Alberts rugby.

8. Ashley Johnson – The big haired man was everywhere on Saturday and he is fast becoming an institution. Looking forward to seeing more from this exceptional player.

9. Charl McLeod – He was head and shoulders the best South African scrum half this weekend, with a quick pass and minimal error rate, he is on his way to making the Bok jersey a reality.

10. Pat Lambie – What more can be said? He was lucky in the try he scored yes, but he was in the right position and was trying something new, so credit to him. His kicking has improved vastly.

11. Rayno Bejamin – He was a real workhorse this weekend, looking for work and getting a few stabbing runs in.

12. Doppies la Grange – This centre combination may not feared over the world, but they make a heck of a combination. Doppies’ distribution and defence is great, just what the Lions need.

13. Waylon Murray – Has found some of that magic he had when playing outside Brad Barritt. This combination with Doppies will win the Lions a few games this season. They did not step back against the much hyped Stormers centre pairing.

14. Odwa Ndungane – A lot has been said about his lack of pace, but he sure had enough gas to catch Toeava and save a certain try.

15. Louis Ludik – He has made the Sharks fullback jersey his own, with great hands under the high ball and countering at full pace, he is the form South African fullback.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : Hope to catch some more games this weekend, nice seeing Rayno Benjamin in there, hope he can keep it up.Johnson was really a star for the Cheetahs, must really suck having the game of your life and your team throws it.

  • Good to see Waylon in stead of the usual suspects.

My international option for the weekend would`ve included Polato-Nau, Kurtly Beale and that little wing of the `Landers . . . Tipoki??

  • Also good to see Ali Hargreaves, can’t say I used to rate him very highly but if the man is stepping up then I’ll be the first to say good job

  • Having watched all three games this weekend this would be very close to my picks as well. Fourie played a pretty decent game for the Bulls but Charl definitely had the upper hand.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Did you catch rugby365′s team of the week by any chance? Good for a laugh if you have the time. Ashley Johnson doesn’t even feature in the bubbling under section but somehow Duane Vermeulen made it in there?

Those teams hardly ever resemble anything worth paying attention to.

But as you say, always good for a laugh..

  • One position I would argue here is 12. I think Meyer Bosman had a better game then Doppies. Or maybe that’s just me. :)

  • @Ben (Comment 12) : Meyer was a little sloppier on defence than Doppies was… 3 missed tackles, to the 0 from the Lions man

  • I’m a Lion, but there’s no way in hell Minnie would be in my team of the week. He kept the Stormers in the game. He conceded 5 penalties, of which three were kickable.

  • @WilladieLeeu (Comment 14) : looking at the stats on ruggastats.com, I’m actually tempted to say Keegan deserves that one based on defence alone.

Stegmann was quiet and I can’t say I even noticed who was at 6 for the Cheetahs… I didn’t see the Stormers-Lions game, but it doesn’t sound like Burger did enough to get a mention either.

In oly 40 minutes of Vodacom Cup, Brussouw would get my vote. He was really good. Opposition not good but he’s gonna be back to his best soon.

Schalk wasn’t good. Must agree on Keegan. He was good.

  • @WilladieLeeu (Comment 17) : well, can’t pick Heinrich for a SA Super Rugby team of the week if he played Vodacom Cup, but agree with you that he shouldn’t have too much difficulty getting back in as soon as he gets into the Cheetahs team proper.

I believe he’s going to play Vodacom again this weekend, then hopefully Super Rugby next weekend.

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : I think Pieter Louw came on as replacement for Burger? He scored a try at the death and that’s about all I remember but I was paying far more attention to the Lions than I was to the Stormers.

Edit: And for what it’s worth I’d pick Doppies ahead of Meyer.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 19) : oh ja… Schalk buggered his knee, didn’t he? It was my wife’s birthday on Saturday and by the time the Lions match came on, her tolerance for rugby had left her for good!

  • On the money except 11 and 15- both of those in my view belong to bulls players (or atleast over the past two weeks they do! )

  • Maybe just playing with the loose trio balance ,have Kabamba chase the ball or try fetch from 8 ,which the cheetahs have used HB in a simmilar way. Viljoen is a good player I feel sorry for the Cheetahs forwarsd becuase they are fantastic ,but from 10-15 they are not as competitive
