De Kock double does the trick

The Sharks XV had to dig deep to grind out a scrappy 25-5 win over the Welwitchias in Windhoek on Saturday afternoon. While the game itself was little to write home about, the 4-try win away from home, including another brace from fullback Kobus de Kock, sees Sean Everitt’s side move to the top of the Vodacom Cup South Section log after two rounds.

The Sharks XV got the match off to a perfect start when de Kock scored his first try in the opening minute. Some good hands down the line saw the fullback given a sniff at the line, which he duly took, despite the attentions of two would-be tacklers. An unexpected downpour fifteen minutes into the game ruined the spectacle somewhat, though, although the Sharks will conceded that they were their own worst enemies at times, with poor execution and decision-making letting them down. The home side drew level through a try by Morne Blom, before Ross Cronje opened up a three-point gap via a penalty (it was a bad day for goal-kicking, with the scrumhalf only converting two from five attempts). Bok sevens wing Sbu Sithole scored the second just before half time.

Impressive number 8 Marcell Coetzee, who worked hard all day alongside flankers Nico Claasen and Lambert Groenewald, scored the third try just shortly after half time and it was de Kock who added the final nail in the coffin with the bonus point try after outside centre Jerome Pretorius had done well to draw his man and create the smallest of gaps. While the Sharks XV will feel that they did what was needed to win, they’ll also be under no illusions, as the tough Namibians proved a real handful, particularly up front.

Speaking to Sharksworld after the game, forward coach Ryan Strudwick confirmed that “we were messy, but effective. We created a lot of opportunities, but struggled to finish.

“Our decision-making and handling let us down in the pouring rain, but we were happy to get the five points away from home,” Strudwick added. The Sharks XV’s next game is against the Valke in Margate.

SCORERS:

Welwitschias 5 – Try: Morné Blom.

Sharks XV 25 – Tries: Kobus de Kock (2), Sbura Sithole, Marcell Coetzee. Conversion: Ross Cronjé. Penalty: Ross Cronjé.

  • Great news to hear that Marcell had another good game. I really like this youngster. I think he’s oozing potential. Hopefully a Sergio Parisse in the making.

  • @bergshark (Comment 4) : Richards is contracted… Sharks won’t take an uncontracted player on tour, I’m pretty sure.
