Highlanders rocked by a family death

The Highlanders, rocked by a death in the “family”, have made one change to their starting 15 to face the Stormers in Saturday’s clash of Super Rugby’s unbeaten teams.

Stuff.co.nz reports that James Paterson comes in on the right wing, with last week’s two-try hero Kade Poki left out of the 22 altogether. Hooker Mahonri Schwalger is also fit for duty this week and will take his place on the reserves bench.

But the Highlanders admitted to being “shell-shocked” ahead of the second leg of their South African double in Cape Town, after news that midfield back Matt Saunders’ father Mike had died back home in Gore.

“It has rocked the squad,” centre Kendrick Lynn told Radio Sport this morning.

“A lot of us knew Mike and some of the players were very close to the Saunders family.

“It is a tight squad, we’ve had a yarn about it and I know we’ll pull together and hopefully put in an extra special performance for him and Mike.”
The Highlanders had been out playing golf when news come through of the death.

“It was a bolt of lightning out of nowhere,” added coach Jamie Joseph.

Matt Saunders, whose sister Hayley is in the Southern Steel netball team, was immediately despatched on a flight back to New Zealand to be with his family.

The Highlanders have a massive assignment this week, backing up on their stunning upset of the Bulls in Pretoria which extended their perfect start to the new season to three straight victories.

The Stormers, after starting with a bye, have won two home matches over the Lions and Cheetahs to get their season away to a solid start.

It’s not clear yet why Poki was dropped, but there had to be something behind his omission after his outstanding performance against the Bulls.

Paterson is a more than capable replacement though, and the promising Siale Piutau moves to the left wing.

Joseph has left his in-form pack intact for the match against last year’s runners up, which means there is no place for fit-again All Black Tom Donnelly in the starting 15.

Veteran former All Black Tony Brown also retains his place on the bench where Joseph will no doubt look for him to make an impact similar to what he made in Pretoria last weekend.

HIGHLANDERS: 15.Ben Smith, 14.James Paterson, 13.Kendrick Lynn, 12.Shaun Treeby, 11.Siale Piutau, 10.Robbie Robinson, 9.Jimmy Cowan, 8.Nasi Manu, 7.Alando Soakai, 6.Adam Thomson, 5.Josh Bekhuis, 4.Jarrad Hoeata, 3.Chris King, 2.Jason Rutledge, 1.Jamie Mackintosh (captain).
Reserves: 16.Mahonri Schwalger, 17.Bronson Murray, 18.Tom Donnelly, 19.John Hardie, 20.Aaron Smith, 21.Tony Brown, 22.Telusa Veainu.

  • No Kade Poki????????

What I wouldn’t do for some behind the scenes info. A guy scores 2 tries in a side that was the first to beat the Bulls at home in almost 3 years and he get’s dropped from the side?

    Is he injured?
Which taxi door did he break?
Which hotel flower pot did he wee in?

I wonder how many drafted him into their FL sides after last weeks great performance.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 9) : Went against them on SB so far for every game they’ve played and they won all of them. Now I’ve picked them to win on SB now watch them lose. Just my luck. :)

  • I wonder where Hertford is hiding. Maybe he is scared that if he creeps out of his hole, his team will lose again

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : I would also love to hear the story Poki(and Piutau for that matter) have been outstanding for the Highlanders this season so far. James Paterson altho’ significantly taller and prob better on D than Poki poses a far far less danger on attack than Poki.
