Let’s win the game first and count the tries afterwards

Am I the only one who gets REALLY nervous when the Sharks go into a game as overwhelming favourites?

I’ve yet to read a match preview for tomorrow’s game against the Rebels that gives the home side any hope in hell of finishing within three scores of the Sharks, much less actually winning the game. Memories, it seems, are short – in my case, not short enough to eclipse the fact that it was a similar “sure thing” match in Melbourne that cost me my life in Last Man Standing.

Super Rugby is tough and the Brumbies found, to their detriment, that being just a little off your game is going to cost you log points in Melbourne, just as it would anywhere else. Sure, the Rebels are a long way from being the best team in the competition, but they have a smattering of really good players and a PROPERLY experienced coach too, the one, in fact, on whose blueprint the Sharks game of today is based. When Rod Macqueen says that he admires the game the Sharks are playing, that’s only because he bloody invented it when Pat Lambie was still in nappies, after all!

What I’m saying here is that the Sharks, once again, are going to be their own biggest enemies heading into this game and the signs are very similar to the encounter against the Reds in 2009 that ultimately ended up derailing a hitherto perfect campaign. Those Sharks too were Currie Cup champions and had rolled into town on the back of a long unbeaten run. They were on top of the table and a five-pointer against the so-called “Rubble Reds” was seen as just another formality along the way to a home semi-final. They went into that game thinking about tries and points difference and because they hadn’t thought too much about winning the game first, they got hammered.

Let’s hope the Class of 2011 remembers that lesson and approaches the Rebels with the same respect they would pay the Crusaders, Bulls or Waratahs when playing any of those sides away from home. Stick to the game plan and subdue the opponents and the tries will come. Start chasing individual glory and you’ll soon be chasing the game as well.

  • I’m always worried when we play against ‘weaker’ teams. I’m more relaxed when we play stronger teams

  • Amen to that. I too am just a little anxious and sincerely hope that the game against the Reds has been held up as a warning for anyone too quick to diss the Rebels tomorrow. We cannot afford to underestimate ANYONE this year.

  • We’re not just going to rock up and win, that’s for sure. The Rebels have some very good, game-breaking players who can turn a game quick-sharp.

If our dear Sharkies didn’t have such a penchant for not pitching up for the “easy” games I wouldn’t have been worried, but unfortunately we often go walkabout in Australia against the “weak” sides.

So, yes Rob, I’m also slightly nervous

  • Have always felt that the sharks (and their supporters) have three different attitudes before a game:
    1. Should Win
    2. Can win
    3. Will win

It’s number three (and this is one of those games) that often comes back and bites.

I have sharks by 15, but if they get to the stadium with the ‘all we have to do to win this one is pitch up’ attitude, they could well come unstuck.

  • Wise words Rob. I am with you on this one. We need to be focused and if we win, that all that counts. If we get a bonus point well that will be great, just need to concentrate on this game and hope to win it. Brumbies came short here a few weeks back.

Also not so sure about our ref for this game. Think Kaplan cost Brumbies that game against the Rebels actually.

One game at a time Sharks. Stay focused.
