Twickers plans falling into place

While we’re yet to see any sort of confirmation from the Sharks themselves, The Crusaders and the RFU seem to have reached an agreement and have confirmed that the Crusaders will host the Sharks at Twickenham in London, with the match kicking off at 16h00 on Sunday 27 March.

The match will be the focal point of a massive fundraising campaign, in which the Red Cross hopes to raise over £1 Million to assist the people of Christchurch, which was devastated by an earthquake on 22 February this year. Tickets go on sale via Ticketmaster on Tuesday (today) and £5 from the sale of each ticket will be donated to the Red Cross.

The Sharks will (presumably) fly to London after their match against the Chiefs on Friday and one of the conditions of their agreeing to the switch was availability of a flight back from London to South Africa immediately after the game, on Sunday evening. This would allow the players to resume training for their derby fixture against the Stormers on Tuesday 29 March with little disruption to their regular schedule.

The Sharks are currently in Auckland and will travel to Hamilton by bus tomorrow.

  • Excellent. This also means that the Sharks won’t be fighting jet lag when they are preparing for the Stormers game. But this is about more that rugby, and I hope the expats pack out the stadium and raise a lot of money for Christchurch.

I think it might even lift their spirits before the chiefs game, and result in a good victory for us. Let’s hope so anyway, I’m having doubts about fridays game…

  • Well I hope this does not affect our Sharks in their home games. I fear tiredness will set in the week we get back.

Now that it looks like it is a given to take place. I feel Sharks should have travelled back on the Mondy night. What a rush after the game to the airport. How rested can you get flying business class? Compare a business class seat/bed to a proper bed? Think players should just think about resting more so than rushing back to train for the Stormers game.

This is hectic travel for our Sharks.

Anyhow good luck to our Sharks. All you guys living in the UK get your butts to the stadium. That means Sharks and Sader supporters.

  • @Ben (Comment 87) : The clocks go forward in England at midnight on Saturday 26 March. At the moment they are on GMT (we are GMT +2 hours). In order to save daylight and give longer evenings in the spring/summer they put the clocks forward to GMT +1 (British Summertime). In autumn the clocks then get put back an hour to GMT. If you remember, there were plans for daylight saving here in SA a couple of years ago. The advantage is that you get long evenings with the sun setting at a later time, allowing you to do more “stuff” after work. It only sets at around 9pm or so in the UK in summertime. This is why things like Wimbledon don’t have/need floodlights.
