The Sharks squad is in good shape at the moment, but there are a few reaching the last couple of seasons of their careers. So how are our possible replacements looking?

In the front row we are possibly going to lose John Smit within the next year. Sabelo Nhlapo is making good progress as a loosehead and I see him filling the gap in the squad. He is strong and has the mobile edge which Sharks props are known for these days.We already know about Kyle Cooper’s abilities, he should play a big role in the Currie Cup coming off bench for Craig Burden. Great that we have Van Staden and Burden who will benifit the most when Smit calls it a day on a great career. Hopefully he is able to lift the Super Rugby trophy for us, cause I can’t remember if he has lifted a trophy for The Sharks. We deserve it after we were robbed in 2007.

At Second Row we don’t need to have a look at replacements just yet; Mostert, Hargreaves, Skeate and Bresler should carry the bulk of the work for at least the next 3 years. Although Hargreaves and Mostert could become choice 3 and 4 in the lock position for the Bokke. Personally I think Mostert has the potential to become Springbok starting number 4 in the next 2 years.

At Loose forward we have to look at bit deeper into our systems due to the possibility of Alberts, Deysel and Kankowski getting consistent call ups for the Springboks over the next 4 years at least. Our main young 3 to look at is Francois Kleinhans for 6, Dan Adongo at 7 and Marcell Coetzee at 8. Coetzee has a strong shot for Currie Cup this year after already being with the senior side for a couple of weeks. Adongo has all the potential, just seems like he needs a bit more time in senior rugby; not sure if or when he is getting his SA Citizenship, but I believe joining the SA Sevens will help his development. Kleinhans has been with the SA U/20 side and we will hopefully see more of him in the U/20 World Cup this year.

Halfback in my opinion Ross Cronje and Fred Zeilinga are the ones to be watched. Ross has not been in his best form some say, but with the Super Rugby exposure he got, he showed he can make it at that level. Zeilinga has a mature rugby mind similar to Lambie. He is calm under pressure and has all the attributes, like Lambie he is pure class. McLeod and Lambie should in my opinion be starting Bok halfback combination, if not this year, after the World Cup. So Conrad Hoffman and Jacques-Louis Potgieter will take their places in the Currie Cup and Ross Cronje and Zeilinga in my opinion should be the cover off the bench. I’m also looking forward to see what Paul Jordaan’s brother does at 10 for Grey Bloem over the next few years.

In the middle we could be losing about 2-3 centres over the next few years through retirement. Leaving only Bosman and maybe Adi, who I think can still go for another 4 years. By this time our main target Paul Jordaan will be around 20-21 and very likely have some Currie Cup experience behind his name. Hopefully Piet Lindeque will also be able to make the grade. Unfortunately Paul Jordaan injured his quad in Hong Kong last week, but we have seen some great stuff from him thus far in the world Sevens series. Great pace and agility, mixed with some clever kicking skills. He has also gained some muscle mass since he left school and he will be hoping to gain a couple more in preparation for senior rugby.

At outside back we could only lose Odwa within the next 4 years, so no need to look too far ahead; but then again all 3 are strong contenders for Springbok call ups and i think all 3 will make the World Cup squad. So we have Sbura Sithole who is currently playing for The Blitzbokke and Mark Richards. Sithole is very well conditioned and his BMI is perfect, he is in great physical condition to play senior rugby. He performed very very well in the Hong Kong sevens and I hope to see more of his combination of strength, power and pace in Adelaide. Mark has been performing very well for Sharks XV as we have all seen. Both of them are great talents and looking forward to see what they can do and we should see at least one or maybe both of them this year in the Currie Cup. Fullback…no brainer! Kobus De Kock has been great for the Sharks XV thus far and plays an attacking style which will suit The Sharks. Not sure if he will get much time this year, Ludik has strongely cemented his spot at 15 for The Sharks and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

The future of The Sharks is in talented hands and I am hoping we will continue picking up trophies and being one of the best and most professional Rugby Unions in World Rugby. Sharks Forever!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Another question, is there a possibility that Tian Meyer will join The Sharks again this week? If JLP, i think he could be a good option off the bench. Don’t really rate Hoffman as a 10 too much, Tian has more experience in the position.

  • Actually why don’t we sign Tian Meyer on a permanent basis???? I still don’t get it. Play 9 and 10 and even centre, he has already shown for Pumas what he can offer and in my opinion it is better than both Cronje’s. Still believe Ross can make it, but i am starting to lose the faith a bit.

what is our options as Bosman is suspect on defence and Stef is a fullback and adds no attacking power in the midfield.

Should the sharks not concider throwing money at Juan de Jong and Tim Whitehead?

Rob , every time I seen them play, I never got the feeling that they are great @ what they do, I actually thought they pretty dam average, not to mention they are way to small to make a decent impact even @ Currie cup level. They have been in the systems for how long now? And still not making the 1st team? They have never ever made me sit up, and never made me get the feeling that they might have the stuff to go all the way.

Rob now please, can you explain to me why they are the wonder kids in your eyes? What have they done to deserve their spot @ the sharks? Are you saying they are able to go all the way want win a World cup for the Boks? I doubt you can say that.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 12) : Now, now, Why do we always hear how good they are and never see it for our own eyes? Not to mention they played a second grade team and expect every player to have a good game against the Griffons.

    Ross played well..

In the first half he battled, the forwards werent getting to the breakdown, so we lost some ball there..

But when he had ball, he played the backline, and surprised the Griffons with a few sniping runs.

    Good player!

Should we not throw money at De Jong, Whitehead and Frans Steyn?

    Bosman – no go
    Stef – fulback
Adi – dodgy on defense, getting long in the tooth.
Swannies – we can use him as a hooker, no flair, one dimentional.
Piet Lindeque – trust me he wont make the step up.

But, all jokes aside, don’t you think if they are only good enough for the Vodacom cup, is that good enough? You are right that they are good Vodacom cup Players, but are they not supposed to be ne next back up players to the Sharks team? How long are we investing in a player, who from age group level will only be good enough for Vodacom Cup then? Are we not doing “Bad” investments in players then?

  • Rob, my feeling is just that if Lindeque was that good he would have made the step up in the last 18 months like Lambie did, specially in last years Currie Cup, he was not even in the squad. Even JP, Frans Steyn, and Mvovo made the step up before the age of 20 and showed their potential. Instead Piet is kept out the side by Stef and Adi to which we all can agree that they do not set the world alight.

If you are good enough you are old enough!
He is now playing wing in the Sharks15, why not centre? Is it because there is better centre’s than him or do we need more wings?

if we ever need a Flank/Lock i would go for Hilton Lobberts. So much potential which i think The Sharks can get out of him. Always liked his aggressive style of play, also has great strength and Power…maybe that is why Deysel and Alberts are my two favourite Sharks….

  • @Reynier Jacobs (Comment 75) : Well in all honestly – if this match was played on paper and on the past performances of both teams – I’d say the Sharks would take it…by quite a margin. However – we have travelled, we are without our little conductor, and less another flyhalf. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, that’s for sure. And the Stormers has a score to settle, so they’ll come out guns blazing. i do still believe the Sharks can pull this off though! But not by too much.

  • @JJR (Comment 15) : Jokes JJR. I’m not too good at being objective. Favourite players and best players are seldom one and the same thing for me. I’m just happy that you’re placing emphasis on the up and coming players. With Rob, Rich and you plugging away, soon we’ll have all Sharks fans arriving early on Sharks matchdays to watch the next generation.

Just 3 things to note: 1. is that this process of development has no end point. On Saturday I watched a Westville schoolboy centre shine like you wouldn’t believe. His brother is already in the Sharks Academy, so in a year or 2 this gr.12 might be the new name on everyones lips. 2.Many of the guys who start out showing a lot of promise never quite cut it in senior rugby as well. Hilton Lobberts is a good example. 3.In order to stay on the top the Sharks have to contract the very best available which means we’ll always be in the market to shopping for quality players.

  • @Reynier Jacobs (Comment 65) : ok – look, I can kind of see your point here, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that he WON’T make the step up… maybe more a case of not being ready to make the step up right now.

Players mature at different ages and for every one guy who’s ready for senior rugby at 19 or 20 (Steyn/Lambie) there are at least 20 others who aren’t.

Piet has just turned 20… He was a star in the under 19 side and is doing well in the Sharks XV too. His own goal is to play Currie Cup this year, so let’s see if he manages to do that. If not, he still have 2 years of under 21 rugby before we need to start worrying about whether he’s ready to step up or not.

Sometimes it’s ok to let a youngster be a youngster.

If Hilton did have quality in 2010, it didn’t reflect in their results. I thought Guy Alexander (Teich’s nephew) and Tack the TH covered all that was good there. I’m obviously wrong.

As for Bosman(nough said). Last 3 games,Rebels,Chiefs and Crusaders showed his weakness on defense and he added nothing on attack, the supposed playmaker. He is Currie Cup material at best. Watch this weekend without Lambie there will again be no plan in that backline. As for Jacobs, maybe he has his hunger back, so lets give him the benefit of the doubt.

He was the top tackler against the Crusaders and was inspiring on attack… go watch how many offloads he made off the deck. Eg. it is incredible how some of the SA Sevens guys have developed and even Odwa Ndungane…he just seems to be getting better with age…incredible. I say back the System first, but definitely have a look out for quality personnel to sign to close the gap between Senior players and the Youth, which creates unbelievable consistancy for a Union in terms of results and performances. • @robdylan (Comment 145) : So much potential it is crazy!!! That is why i think SA Sevens could make him even better…i have seen how Sithole has grown as a player recently, he has taken a huge step forward in his game and could soon be ready for a Sharks opportunity. Hopefully CC is his time to shine.

  • @JJR (Comment 147) : I think we need to understand exactly where the weaknesses are in Dan’s game and work out whether 7s would actually help him strengthen those. I think it could actually turn out to be very good for him, because from what I’ve heard his ball skills and tactical appreciation don’t quite match his brute strength and natural athleticism.

  • @robdylan (Comment 151) : Exactly…he tends to run at players rather than runnign fullout at the space between defenders, he has attributes to also be a 8, but they can only be truly brought out if he develops those skills you mentioned. So, yes i do think Sevens will help him.

  • @JJR (Comment 155) : ja, I don’t think he can be an 8 until he adds a little bit more subtlety to his game. But as Alberts has shown, you need a brute in every loose trio and the combo you mentioned, with Franna, Dan and Marcell has the potential to be quite frighteningly good as a combo, especially with Mtembu on the bench.

  • I love articles like this: thanks JJR.

Sithole is really improving from 7′s, and I think Dan would also benefit from having some space to better learn to exploit his attributes, and also build his confidence.

Cooper and Nhlapo are great front row prospects, while Jordaan and Lindeque could well become great centres in time.

Only concern for centres though, is that 100kg seems to have become the new standard.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 163) : outside centres, maybe… I reckon inside centres can still fit the compact form-factor mould…

Lindeque has the sort of frame that could probably carry 100kgs if it makes sense for him to bulk up that much without losing speed. As a big inside centre option, we of course have Dwayne Jenner.

    @Big Fish (Comment 163) :
Pleasure…i love exposing the youngsters, cause i hate it when brilliant youngsters get over looked.

Piet has gone up weight…he is around 97kg now and Paul is 90-91kg…That weight is almost perfect for his height though and too much weight/muscle mass eg. more than 29 BMI could effect his pace and agility, if he can settle on a 28.5 BMI he will be fine…also has low centre of gravity and powerful hips, so he won’t have a problem.
