Downey named to face former team

Former Sharks loose forward Justin Downey will face his old teammates for the first time on Friday as he continues his good run in the Griquas number 7 jersey.

Downey, who moved to Kimberley midway through the Currie Cup last year did not play in either of their matches against the Sharks, but a string of strong performances later in the competition cemented him a place in the side for this year’s Vodacom Cup, in a dominant loose trio containing the likes of Wesley Wilkins and Leon Karemaker, both from the Western Cape.

Former Eagles and Cheetahs player Jandre Blom comes in for Griquas at scrumhalf in an attempt to get the North Section frontrunners back on track after narrow losses to the Pampas XV and Western Province in the last two weeks. The Sharks XV will name their side for the Kimberley encounter later today, but they will also need a good win in order to claw their way back up the log after dropping from first to fourth when the Lions beat them two weeks ago. Sean Everitt’s side have their tails up, though, after a good win against the Griffons in Empangeni at the weekend.

Griquas: Logan Basson; Richard Lawson, Matthew Rosslee, Hanno Coetzee, Rocco Jansen; Earl Rose, Jandré Blom; Leon Karemaker, Justin Downey, Wesley Wilkins (capt), Jaco Nepgen, Hendrik Roodt, Ashley Wells, Matthew Dobson, Steph Roberts.
Subs: Simon Westraadt, Ivann Espag, Henry Grimes, Edwin Hewitt, Burger Schoeman, Liam Slatem, Johan Herbst/Rudi Vogt.

  • Hey Rob where’s Mark Richards. (I think that’s his name the outside center that went to the Griquas for last years Currie Cup) He seemed to have a lot of potential. Is he out with an injury or just not getting picked or did he make another move?

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) :
Too true. Last week against the WP15 they were by far the better team on the park and should have won the game easily. Strong scrum and good lineout. Earlier WP and Lions drew at Newlands. Lions bullied us at a very wet Ellis Park. Griquas destroyed WP scrum. Will be interesting.

  • @Whindy (Comment 6) : coach is Abrie Minnie. He’s there in a caretaker capacity until they name a perm replacement. Knuckles Connolley is still in the running, as far as I know.

  • Good team, almost a Eagles 2008 team…love the fact that the super schedule has created urgency with big unions to perform on this stage…
