On Sunday 5 June, Crusader and All Black Sonny Bill Williams will fight for the earthquake ravaged Christchurch at the Waitakere Trust Stadium, Auckland in a fundraising event to support the beleaguered city.

Sky Television has more than 800,000 subscribing households, throughout New Zealand, who will be able to watch this charity fund raising event at home and in licensed premises such as hotels, pubs and clubs throughout New Zealand.

SKY’s ‘Arena’ Pay-Per-View channel and SKY will host the broadcast and has gone on record to officially state that all proceeds the fight generates will be donated to the Red Cross 2011 New Zealand Earthquake Appeal. SKY will also cover all the production costs for the fight and its commercial partners will be actively encouraged to take the opportunity to make a donation. Rialto channel, SKY’s movie channel partner has already pledged NZ$25,000.

Crusader, Sonny Bill has immediate ties to Canterbury and was in Christchurch during the September 4th 2010 and the February 22nd 2011 earthquakes. He has often expressed his passion about contributing to the Christchurch earthquake recovery efforts in anyway he can.

SKY Chief Executive John Fellet has gone on record in saying, “We were considering how best to contribute to the earthquake relief and this event posed the best opportunity to raise a lot of money for the cause”.

“When Sonny Bill learned that SKY was to donate its proceeds from the event for Christchurch he committed to not only put his body on the line on June 5th but has personally committed to contribute $100,000 to the fund”.

“I’m sure all New Zealander’s will get behind Sonny Bill by either coming to the stadium, or watching at home, knowing they are supporting Christchurch by doing so. SKY will heavily promote the event in an effort to raise as much money as possible to pass onto the people of Christchurch” said Mr Fellet”.

Sonny Bill Williams added “I’m looking forward to getting in the ring again come June and I encourage everyone to get behind the fight by watching on SKY to help support Christchurch”.

The fight will take place during the Super Rugby season. Round 16 takes place on the 3rd and 4th June when the Crusaders have the bye. Williams has gone to on record to say that he will not be taking any time off rugby with the Crusaders to train for the fight.

Fight promoters are now in a search for an opponent for SBW. It is thought they are after a fighter who has had more than 12 professional fights as well as someone that will give the fight creditability.

SBW will be more than NZ$100,000 out of pocket. June 5th will put his rugby and boxing careers on the line. In such a huge rugby year tongues are bound to wag around the sporting globe.

  • Good of SBW.

Must admit that after his “tackle” on Ryan Kankowski I was wishing that he would get in a ring with Flo Simba.

    Maybe he still will. ;-)

  • I am amazed that NZ Rugby let him continue with his boxing. I would have thought they would restrict him to one employer… namely the NZRU?

  • @CS (Comment 5) : His contract allows him to fight – it was the only way that the NZRFU could get his signiture ! :???:

  • @McLovin (Comment 7) : How is he going to punch someone with his shoulders? Cos we all know SBW doesn’t know how to use his hands

  • Perhaps his opponent will put him out of SupeRugby for the rest of the competition and leave Dapper Dan Carter bereft and partnerless, thereby severely reducing the Saders’ chances of lifting the trophy.
