Jonathan Kaplan, Craig Joubert and Shaun Veldsman have been selected by the IRB to do duty at the 2011 Rugby World Cup that takes place in New Zealand later in the year. Marius Jonker and Mark Lawrence missed out on selection for the tournament.
André Watson, SARU’s Manager of Referees and previously a referee in World Cups himself, said it was an amazing achievement for South Africa to have 2 of the 10 referees come from South Africa.
Craig Joubert and Jonathan Kaplan are 2 of the referees that are going to be doing duty and Shaun Veldsman will go as a dedicated TMO.
Only South Africa, England and Ireland have two referees each on the panel. The four other referees are from New Zealand, Australia, France and Wales.
Apart from Kaplan and Joubert, the other referees selected for RWC duty are Bryce Lawrence (New Zealand) Steve Walsh (Australia), Wayne Barnes (England), Dave Pearson (England), Alain Rolland (Ireland), George Clancy (Ireland), Romain Poite (France) and Nigel Owens (Wales).

Well done SA Refs
you must of all did sth to impress the IRB
I’m no expert but I think Mark Lawrence deserves to be there more than Kaplan does.
The Aussie no.1 is actually a NZer. I wonder if Stuart Dickinson offered to buy him a drink when the selection news broke?
@beet (Comment 3) : Who reffed the Sharks vs Crusaders game?
@Ben (Comment 4) : Walsh
I’m glad Marius Joubert didn’t make the cut. That means he can play for the Sharks in the Currie Cup.
@war1 (Comment 5) : Thanks, don’t like that chap at all.
@war1 (Comment 6) :
thank goodness! Wonder if Marius Jonker made the cut then?
@Ben (Comment 8) : He didn’t either which was obviously what was meant there at the end of the first paragraph.
@war1 (Comment 9) : I was being sarcastic. Smiley at the end of my comment.
@war1 (Comment 6) : I’ve fixed it now.
I am very surprised that Lawrence has AGAIN not made it. What must the guy do to get there, he got screwed in 2007 as well.

SBW on his unpunished shoulder charge…
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/
rugby/news/4867638/More-cold-shoulder-from-Sonny-Bill-
Williams
Having been clocked by Williams, Kankowski appeared in need of a standing eight count in London last month. As he lay squirming on the Twickenham turf it seemed as if he had either run into an invisible
100,000-volt electric wire or a
short jab from the Crusaders
second five-eighth. Then the TV
replays revealed he had actually collected the point of Williams’ shoulder in his chest.
For those who watched Williams
during his league career, his
shoulder charges were one of
those rare treats that brought fans to their feet, sent stars spinning behind opponents ’ eyes and dentists rushing for their phone numbers.
The only problem is they are
illegal in rugby. So when Williams unleashed another soon after the Kankowski “hit”, and accidentally nailed Owen Franks instead, it was of little surprise referee Steve
Walsh exercised his lecture finger. Any more of that, commanded
Walsh, and you are a goner.
Williams reckons he has had his
fun for the season and that it was just Kankowski ’s misfortune to cop it.
“After I did that shoulder charge I was just pumped and a minute
later I went in for another big
shoulder charge and hit
`Owie ’ (Owen Franks). Sometimes I get that aggression but I know that is an easy fix. It is just a mindset thing and I am old enough to handle it.
As far as I know, only 2 refs per country is allowed per RWC. I’m sure Jonker and Lawrence would’ve been there if they allowed more.
@Ben (Comment 10) : Yeah, I know. Twas for the benefit of the masses.
@war1 (Comment 17) :
This is bad news for us indeed. Jonker would now be involved in the CC, which means the bulls should sneak the semi`s again.
@Ben (Comment 2) : Agreed
