Skysport.co.nz reports that All Blacks first five-eighths Dan Carter has withdrawn from the Crusaders side to play the Chiefs in Friday’s Super Rugby match at Mt Maunganui.

Carter was due to join Chiefs and All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina and All Blacks captain and flanker Richie McCaw in making comeback appearances in the game.

Carter left the field injured in the Crusaders’ Twickenham game against the Sharks but suffered a hamstring tightening at training on Wednesday. His place in the Crusaders side has been taken by Matt Berquist while Tom Marshall moves onto the reserves bench.

Muliaina suffered fractures to two vertebrae in the week three match against the Rebels in Hamilton.

Carter was to have marked his 200th first-class game in the match which will be McCaw’s first game of the season after recovering from a stress fracture in his foot suffered during pre-season training.

Coach Todd Blackadder said: “These derby matches are especially important in this season’s competition due to the conference format. Traditionally they always carry extra spice and it will be a tough, physical match up there.

“I was pleased with what we achieved against the Bulls in Timaru last weekend but we still have plenty to work on and I know the guys are looking forward to doing that.”

Kahn Fotuali’i will have his first start of the season at halfback while Owen Franks will start at tighthead prop with Ben Franks at loosehead.

Chiefs’ coach Ian Foster said: “We have had a really solid weeks preparation as we get ready for this game and then our two-week tour.

“The Crusaders have a strong playing roster and are playing as well as I have seen them play and are no doubt very confident for this game.

“We are going to have to be strong and accurate in our play to combat them and we have focused hard on that all week. We are looking forward to spending three days in the Bay and finishing off our preparation,” he said.

The game will be significant for wing Sitiveni Sivivatu as he plays his 83rd game to become the most capped Chiefs player, having passed Michael Collins.

Unavailable for the Crusaders was Sam Whitelock and for the Chiefs were Ben May, Colin Bourke and Stephen Donald.

The teams are:

Crusaders: 1.Ben Franks, 2.Corey Flynn, 3.Owen Franks, 4.Brad Thorn, 5.Chris Jack, 6.George Whitelock, 7.Matt Todd, 8.Kieran Read (captain), 9.Kahn Fotuali’i, 10.Matt Berquist, 11.Zac Guildford, 12.Sonny Bill Williams, 13.Robbie Fruean, 14.Sean Maitland, 15.Israel Dagg.

Reserves: 16.Quentin MacDonald, 17.Wyatt Crockett, 18.Luke Romano, 19.Richie McCaw, 20.Andy Ellis, 21.Tom Marshall, 22.Adam Whitelock.

  • Matt played opposite Morne Steyn, that doesn’t make it very hard to be the stand out Flyhalf.

  • @Ben (Comment 2) : Matt played very well and he has a lot of talent. He needs to work on his kicking though, but if you play for the Crusaders, who needs a kicker. Just give the ball to SBW and he will score you a try under the posts and make you look good

  • Pity he will not be able to run out for his 200th….but rather keep him in cotton, so he could be longer in action for me to watch!!

BTW – if they need an au pair to baby-sit him – show him straight to me!

The only problem Ice might have in NZ is that she might get arrested for stalking Dan carter.
