Pat cleared to play, but no Deysel yet

The Sharks received a timely boost ahead of their tenth-round Super Rugby clash against the Hurricanes this weekend, with playmaker Patrick Lambie taking full part in training on Monday. The 20-year-old flyhalf has been out of action for some weeks with a finger injury.

Coach John Plumtree confirmed that the Sharks are in good shape after their bye last week, with only Alistair Hargreaves unavailable for this weekend’s game. Jean Deysel, who has been making a low-key return after a serious knee injury, will also not be considered for Super Rugby at this stage and will probably feature for the Sharks XV in their Vodacom Cup quarter-final against Western Province next week.

Plumtree expects Deysel to come back into the Super Rugby reckoning after the Sharks’ second bye, coming up in three weeks’ time.

  • Good that Plum’s managing Deysel with due care. No need to rush him back. Welcome back Lambo!

  • Welcome back SuperPat! Glad to see Plum is managing Deysel. Don’t rush him back. Would be a real bummer though if he got injured playing the Vodacom cup. Also Alberts needs a rest.

  • Good to get Pat back. Damn, really wanted Deysel back for the game against Stormers next week. Then rather he is 100% fit and game ready when he finally gets back.

  • If UCT can call up Lobberts for that one game to get them into the semi-finals. I see no reason why Deysel AND a few others shouldn’t be used in our VC side to boost our title chances.

  • Excellent news. He’s been out a few weeks so lets not expect miracles.Happy if he doesnt play the full 80. As for Deysel, it will be fantastic to see him back but fit and healed is better than sporadic appearances due to injury.

  • Nursing Deysel is good, but i don’t think that is really the case as he played 80min against the Pumas last week Friday. I think it is more a case of letting him get ready for Super Rugby again. And I fully agree with the choice when you look at the huge mistake the bulls made with rushing FdP back to Super Rugby without any game time.

And YAY for Lambies return! can wait to see him back in action this weekend!

Interesting call on Deysel. I guess it shows that the intensity of the two competitions is just so way apart.

@rekinek (Comment 30) : And if he keeps going the way he has been in the No 10 he’s definitely guaranteed the Springbok flyhalf berth. It may not be for the RWC (then again, looking at current form, it might) but Pat was born to wear the Springbok 10.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 35) : We only have to hope Divvy has the gumption to go with form instead of tried and tested but woefully out of form.

I would have Butch as my first choice flyhalf and Super Pat as his 2IC. Scrum half is another concern. After FdP my next choice would be Pienaar who has been playing some amazing rugby in Ireland.

  • Damn, what`s the use of getting Deysel back when it`s too late for us to secure a play-off spot?!

I say roll the dice next week in Cape Town. Start him, Alberts and Keegan. If we pull off the upset we`re right back in contention. If not, it`s the end of our season anyway.

  • @Pr’Ice Flower (Comment 38) : What I mean is, we`re still in contention right now. But if we lose to the Stormers in CT, we won`t finish first of the SA conferences, so we`ll probably have to travel away to Cape Town or worse, Eden Park for the Quarter finals, then all the way to Nelson for the final.
That will make it very difficult for us.
But if we can somehow snatch the lead from the Stormers by playing our best possible combination right now, we`ll make it so much easier on ourselves for the final couple of rounds.

Oh well, Plum probably won`t go for it anyway. You read it here first! ;-)
