Get well soon Emil

We received some really bad news this morning, with junior Sharks winger Emil Schwarz facing an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a serious knee injury in a club game yesterday.

Scwarz, who just turned 18 a month ago, established himself as a regular in the Hilton College first team from the age of 15 and after a string of good performances at Craven Week in 2009 and 2010, won selection to the SA Under 18 side last year. At 1.9 metres and over 100kg, his combination of raw power and skill saw him rewarded with a Sharks junior contract and an Academy spot this year and he was also fortunate enough to tour Argentina with Dawie Theron’s Baby Boks a month or so ago.

According to our information, Schwarz suffered a horrible dislocation of his knee while playing for the Rovers Under 20 side last night and he appears to have suffered extensive ligament damage in the process. The injury will, no doubt, have put paid to his 2011 season and we wish him all the best for the speediest possible convalescence.

Sterkte, Mielie! We’re all behind you, hoping and praying for a full recovery and a return to rugby in due course.

  • Remember watching a inter town game a few years back – standing next to the field in bitterly cold NorthWest, we just heard this Bang sound like a starting rifle. It was one of my friends who’s leg got broken in a tackle – right off in the middele of his ankle and knee. It was the most horrific sound in the world, and this being at social level. Dont even wanna know what goes on in the professional world. Respect to all players taking the hits!

  • Just a quick update here. This was a very serious injury indeed, with arterial and nerve damage involved. Emil was operated on for 6 hours in the early hours of this morning and is still in ICU.
Right now, I think the concern is whether he will regain the use of his leg at all. A return to rugby is very much a secondary consideration.

Any and all good wishes and prayers are sorely needed for Emil and his friends and family

  • Very sad news. Emil also picked up an injury in the opening minutes of last year’s 1st Craven Week match and ended up watching the KZN schools games from the sidelines, so he’s had some rotten luck. Hopefully it all changes to good luck from this point onwards.

  • @Reebok (Comment 7) : Hey Reebok, were you at Kearsney today. That Grey College vs Monnas game was unbelievable. Any opinions to share if you were there?
