Congrats, Jake!

Jake White has apparently been confirmed as Brumbies coach on a four-year deal. This development marks an (in my opinion) long-overdue return to hands-on coaching for the former Bok mentor, who hasn’t picked up the whistle in earnest since leading the South African side to World Cup glory almost four years ago.

As we know, Jake has been involved in a number of ventures over the last few years and has been more than happy to offer his opinions on the performances of virtually every other coach in the game. Occasionally, this has been done under the guise of paid “consultant” – such as when his Winning Ways team lifted the Lions off the bottom of the Currie Cup log a few years ago and helped them achieve a vastly-improved sixth place finish. More often, though, through a proliferation of blog posts and media interviews, Jake has offered his assistance in a father more unofficial capacity and is always a great oke to consult when you want to understand what it is you are doing wrong.

Let’s hope that the combined wisdom of these four years spent analysing the weaknesses of his competition (and talking about them at length to anyone who will listen) will come in useful as Jeppe’s finest looks to once more put his outstanding theoretical understanding of the game into practice. Jake showed that he has what it takes to turn a bunch of no-hopers into champions in a short space of time (the Boks in 2004 being a case in point) and the strife-ridden basket case that is the Brumbies class of 2011 looks like just the sort of challenge that is tailor-made for his particular skill set.

At least the Sharks can rest easy knowing that one player who certainly won’t be on the Brumbies’ shopping list in 2012 is flank Willem Alberts… the former Bok coach went to some lengths last week to explain why the burly Alberts considered by many to be an automatic selection for the South African World Cup side, is a limited player that would have no place in his loose trio.

Congrats, Jake and good luck. Let’s hope the shift from commenting to coaching after four years on the sidelines doesn’t prove too difficult to make.

  • I wonder if he has, what is required, to deal with a bunch like the Brumbies?? Where two coaches have seen their backsides, due to player power. Jake is notorious for instilling his discipline, ask Victor?? Just not sure the Aussies will like it!!
At least he starts with a team that are playing quite badly and will be able to take them up, rather than down, hopefully for him!! I used to be a Jake White fan, but I think his ego has got in his way, he does love the sound of his own voice

As coach you are running the entire show, deciding on game plans, developing game plans, selecting players, managing players, etc. I just don’t think one could be successful without have complete self belief, or even arrogance to an extent. Just my opinion, makes for a good coach, but not so much for a good person.

  • I think Jake White is frustrated at how he was treated by the South African media.

I sincerely hope that he gets a chance to show a big fat up yours to each and every South African fan that has had any negative comment about him.

South Africans are by and large unable to show loyalty to their own kind and will turn on anyone at a moments notice irrespective of the reasons.
