S15 Game 74 – Stormers (32) vs Sharks (12) F/T

The rugby weekend culminates with a massive match in Cape Town, where the Stormers are confident of two from two against a Sharks team that has gone through a rough few weeks before getting back to winning ways against the Hurricanes.

The Stormers welcome back a few Springboks in Jacque Fourie and Bryan Habana, while their flyhalf, after much speculation, has finally been ruled our and the pivot jersey will be worn by Lionel Cronje.

The Sharks coach has opted to keep John Smit at hooker and leave Bismarck to come on in the second half, and whether that is a result of Bismarck’s poor lineout throwing in recent weeks or the fact that he might not be fully fit yet, is still to be seen.

Everywhere you look in this match you see battles of epic proportions, from front rows, lock combinations to the centres. It will be a battle royale and the winning team will almost certainly take top spot at the end of the conference games. A tough game to call but I would put my money in the Sharks here.

Stormers: 15. Conrad Jantjes, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Jaque Fourie, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Lionel Cronje, 9. Dewaldt Duvenage, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Francois Louw, 6. Schalk Burger (Captain), 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Rynhardt Elstadt, 3. CJ van der Linde, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. Wicus Blaauw

Replacements: 16. Ethienne Reynecke, 17. Brok Harris, 18. De Kock Steenkamp, 19. Nick Koster, 20. Ricky Januarie, 21. Juan de Jongh, 22. Kurt Coleman

Sharks: 15. Louis Ludik, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Stefan Terblanche, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. JP Pietersen, 10. Pat Lambie, 9. Charl McLeod, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Willem Alberts, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Ross Skeate, 4. Steven Sykes, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. John Smit (Captain), 1. Tendai Mtawarira.

Replacements: 16. Bismarck du Plessis, 17. Eugene van Staden, 18. Alistair Hargreaves, 19. Jean Deysel, 20. Conrad Hoffmann, 21. Adrian Jacobs, 22. Lwazi Mvovo

Schlk Burger and Frans louw played well .

Wake up sharks ,you where a sad affair tonight.
Emotions aside ,the score line really refelcts what went on here!

Our forwards also took the ball up by them selves to much and got tackled and driven back by two or three men.

  • Hello all, pity my first post here couldn’t have been made in happier circumstances. The Sharks were TERRIBLE today. The Stormers played with so much more hunger, energy, physicality and brains. The Sharks seemed stunned into submission. What happened?

We DESPERATELY need new centres. Bosman has been a bit of a disappointment this season and his defence is very suspect for such a big guy. Oupa Terblanche is becoming a liability to the team.

Turnovers! Boy, when did we forget how to protect the ball in the tackle? For the Stormers it was like taking candy from a baby.

Lineouts! They have been poor all season…

Touchy subject this… but I reckon it’s time for someone like Hargreaves to take over the captaincy. In my view neither Terblanche nor Smit can command a starting place.

The real disappointment is that had we won that game the Sharks would have been top of the conference. But worryingly the manner of the defeat suggests the Stormers are a FAR superior team.

I can’t see the Sharks topping the conference from now on in, not if they play like they did today. As usual (with a glass half empty) it AGAIN seems to be a season of disappointment for Sharks fans, when there was so much early promise. Again.

They did not secure the breakdown well enough -last year we had simmilar problems !

The conference winners are placed 1,2 & 3 on THEIR finishing points regardless of any other teams’ points. Then 4,5 & 6 are placed from the next 3 highest. So it is VERY concievable that a team with more points than 2nd or 3rd will be placed 4th or lower.

  • Plum is really starting to make me dislike Stef more and more. How good was that mark from Stef behind is own goal line? Just to take a tap and kick the ball straight to Aplon. Think Stef think!!! Dot the ball down and get the 22 dropout! Sorry just had to get that one out of my system!

  • As much as we like to bloat about our loose forwards here at the Sharks, we do have an Achilles heel. For most of the time our Loosies, bar Botes, stand of the ball and are not at the breakdown. I feel we missed Botes a lot today, especially when Smit was on.

  • We have a lot to think about. I was really hoping we would be up for this game considering how much was at stake… Sadly we were pitiful. Stormers strategically are a lot more refined, and today they were in a different sphere physically. Our lineout set piece is still worrying and our whole game management is suspect. Midfield is seriously worrying. MB & ST haven’t truly clicked and just don’t seem SupeRugby level. What will Sharks do? We need to finish the season strong…

  • @Pablo Dinero (comment 243): Mate, I’m too pissed off to give you a proper responce. In short, the Crusaders offered us extra cash for our role in having the game played on the Sunday. Sharks management thought it was a great idea as we would get some cash and a few sensless blogger that live in lalaland and I believe don’t use their brains, thought that we would be able to beat the Crusaders on the Sunday and still win the game against the Stormers in SA on the Saturday. The 3 games therefore was the Crusaders game as they would be too pumped to lose that game, the Stormers at the Tank as we would be too tired, today’s game as the Stormers would believe that they can beat us and would want to prove that 1st game was no mistake.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 306) : So no credit to the Stormers then?

You scored 18 points in two games.

    Conceded almost 50 points.

    Conceded 5 tries.

Scored zero tries & zero log points.

Can’t possibly be because the Stormers are simply a better team?

  • McLovin, I see I need to further explain myself. The Stormers game in Durban would have been won if we didn’t think we have a team of supermans. An away game is tricky and you don’t want the added pressure of having to win one to make up for a loss at home. The Stormers team we played today was a different team that we played against last year and this year. The Stormers have now beaten us 3 times in a row. Plum is also not smart at times. The Stormers have been throwing numbers @ the ruck for ages. Still we didn’t plan accordingly.

The better team won. Twice in a row. Comprehensively. No excuses.

  • @greatsharksays: goalkicking cost is in durban vs stormers..couldve been very diff game if our kicking was on target.sadly,it wasn’t..
Why don’t sharks look to use the dropgoal vs stormers? How many times did we get into a position to use the dropgoal?we have lambie, meyer bosman and stef who can both kick at goal.. If we can’t seem to make the final yard to get over the tryline, but we are in a position to get it between the poles, then surely we must do that??.. Name of the game is scoring points and like naas said:can’t really stop the drop goal..something to thonk about when playing “the comps best def sysytem”..

  • we shouldve looked to go for dropgoal when we gained possession of ball from the first kick-off.
Stormers lose the ball from kick-off,we get it,lay a platform for the dg..bang! Sharks3-0stormers.. In the first min of play..bit of a confidence boost to the sharks and bit of a blow to stormers confidence..
