Sharks taught a rugby lesson

The Stromers played all the rugby and kept all of the log points on offer in beating the Sharks by 32 points to 12 in Cape Town this evening.  The home side scored four tries to zero and have extended their lead at the top of the South African conference to 8 points as a result.

For the Sharks, precious little went right all day and some serious questions will need to be asked after some very lacklustre performances from players with big reputations. The Stormers hammered away at the Sharks pack all night and kept them on the back foot, with big counter-rucking and superb groundwork from the likes of Francois Louw resulting in numerous turnovers at the breakdown. Benefting from this surfeit of possession, the Stormers centres made mince meat of the porous Sharks defence, with Jean de Villiers, Jacque Fourie and later Juan de Jongh making huge inroads through the gaping holes between Meyer Bosman and Stefan Terblanche.

Despite a somewhat improved second-half showing – at least in terms of possession, the Sharks were never able to erode the massive 22-9 half-time deficit due to poor decision-making with ball in hand, as well as horribly sloppy execution that saw a knock-on count in the high teens. Add to that some frankly ridiculous aimless kicking from the likes of Charl McLeod, Pat Lambie and Stefan Terblanche and it’s actually miraculous that the Stormers didn’t win by more.

The tries in the first half were scored by Gio Aplon, Jacque Fourie and de Villiers, while hooker Deon Fourie rubbed salt into the wounds late in the game in scoring the fourth from the back of a driving maul.

Scorerrs: Stormers (32): Tries by Aplon, J Fourie, de Villiers, D Fourie. Lionel Cronje (2 convs, 1 pen), Aplon (1 drop) and Kurt Coleman (1 conv)
Sharks (12): Pat Lambie (4 pens)

  • if we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna be doing it the hard way this year.

We still have a 6 point buffer over the next closest team (the Tahs) and provided we don’t lose again, we’re still fine for a knockout. It’s going to be away, though…

Some tough calls need to be made here as well.

  • Few things we learnt today.

Stormers (coaching staff take a bow) have the Sharks’ number.

Stormers forwards, especially Vermeulen, are not as bad as some folks would like us to believe.

Bekker is the best lineout forward in SA.

And the Sharks are in desperate need of a competent centre pairing.

  • Stormers were excellent. I have personally written off this season. Meyer and Oupa has cost us our season. Dont know why Plum persists with them week in and out. Now we wait anxiously on Joubert – a player we couldn’t wait to get rid of for the boks due to his poor defense… And we get excited when Adi comes on… What a low after an era with Butch, Barrit, Murray, Steyn.

Perhaps this is justice if you look at the names of the players we messed around to the point where they left.

  • Well done Stormers, and congratulations to the fans – this was a dominating performance.

Really positive to see the performance of Boks like Bekker, JdV, Fourie and Habana.

Sharks have some major issues to resolve of they wish to reach the knock-outs – lineouts, kicking, midfield and tackling aree glaring weaknesses.

Oh, both centres and Mcleod had a shocker.

Juan de Jongh and Heinrich Brussow would be a good start

Anyone else think Skeate was disappointing again?

  • Not a lot of positives to take from the game, but Deysel made it through his first 20 minutes, which is good.

Hoffmann made a half decent impact when he came on, it might be time for him to get a start, McLeod is just off his usual pace.

Our front row was good, the second row let us down. We need to work on our lineouts and I reckon Mostert and Hargreaves to start at lock next week.

Centre I’m not going to comment on, but if I have to say something, all the talk about Adi coming on, and he had almost no impact. We need to start looking at our juniors and give them the opportunity to shine..

  • @ Richard, when Adi came on the damage was already done, from a player’s perspective myself there is not much to do when others around you are already down and out…Jacobs was isolated most of the time and this was pre-planned by Stormers coaches seeing the Sharks coaches build-up this hype of Jacobs being the best impact player around in persisting using him in that capacity…

  • The Brumbies are a bit of a bogey team for the Sharks. I wouldn’t propose wholesale changes but Bismark to start, Hargreaves and Mostert to start, Botes for Daniel (if fit) and Jacobs in for Terblanche. Make Hargreaves captain, we need to plan for the captaincy for next season when Smit and Terblanche will no longer be around.

McLeod and Alberts possibly need a rest too, but that’s starting to get wholesale.

  • The one thing when you get a hiding like this that you cant do is sudenlly have wholesale changes ,the individuals need to recognise their mistakes ,pick themselves up and get on with it . Our midfield is the only change i would make . Maybe play deysel at 7 and Alberts at 8 (in a looser role as a break )

Jean is a better running and passing player than SBW ,Sbw offloads well (he is a much much better league version of the wynands/andreis strauss of the worlds ) yet his distribution , i feel ,hasnt been that of a great 12, he attacks the advantage line well and get offloads to tackles.

Jean dv will get his backline firing better than sbw would on any given day, if they both had to tap into the depths of their talents

JDV just drifted into the space that Meyer created by drifting out which is probably more the system that Meyer. What worries me is that this hasn’t been fixed after so many weeks of rugby.

    @war1 (Comment 60) :
Bit of both. We don’t have a good defence marshall amongst the centres, and neither is particularly strong on defence.

In any event, I was at the game and I can tell that from on high you could see the Stormer’s speed of the mark on defence – they were shutting down Lambie very quick, and Mcleod’s head-high passes were not helping.

Big picture; it was an awesome display from the Bok centres, and we shouldn’t undermine how well the Stormers played by just blaming our centres.

  • I’m up and I’m feeling much better than I was last night. I haven’t been as pissed off as I was after last night’s game. simple..the stormers at the start of the season made it public that they lost in both finals last year because they were not physical enough, they also said they will not be bullied again. Their play this season has been bordering on thugery (if there’s such a word) the entire season. Sharks didn’t do their homework and thought that Alberts alone could the job. Never again must we go to war without Bismarck, alberts, deysel and mostert in our pack. Alberts was marked big time and therefore in effective.JS, Skeate, MB don’t have it in them when the game is this physical.

  • Not sure how much value there is in adding my voice to the cacophony, but venting might make me feel a little better…

Firstly, congratulations to the Stormers and their fans. Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected such a one-sided affair. And while I was less than enamoured with some of the reffing calls, the simple fact is that this was a 20-point margin game; there is *no* way a ref could account for all of that. Nope, we were handed our asses by a team who was simply in another league on the day.

The Stormers were hungrier and more committed on attack and in defence, and executed the basics far, far better than we did. It’s hard to think of any facet where we even had a look-in, except maybe for the scrums.

I am also in complete agreement with McLoving that the roles of the respective coaching teams have to be acknowledged. The Stormers had clearly done their homework, and knew exactly how to neutralise our strengths (when last was Willem Alberts this ineffectual?) and where to apply the pressure (the first two tries were both as a direct result of pressure, first on attack, and then of defense, on our centres). Also, the Stormers defensive systems must surely be as close to perfect as they come. Alistair and co. can look in the mirror this morning, knowing that they have earned their salaries, and my respect.

As for the Sharks, the more I think about the game, the more I feel that the only suitable description is “rudderless”. People have been bemoaning the fact that the Boks and the Bulls have only one game plan, and when that proves ineffective, lack the ability to change to a plan B. On the evidence of last night, even our plan A is half-baked at best.

The standard of our backline play is simply shocking. I’ve noted before that our strategy seems to involve sending the ball down the line, hoping for a line-break, and then playing off that. Disregarding how monumentally naive that is in the modern game (and particularly against the Stormers’ defense), a simple look at our personnel should make it abundantly clear how inefectual a plan like that is.

Lambie has the ability to break the line, but is being closely marked. As for our centres, Meyer Bosman is not going to create linebreaks in the JDV mould; instead, he will create opportunities for those outside him, but then you need someone to capitalise on that, and… I’m not going to repeat that conversation, even I am getting sick of hearing myself hold court on it. Which leaves only our outside backs to provide some thrust, but then we need some plan to bring them into play in the midfield, a la the Crusaders. Sadly I’ve seen very little evidence of that thus far the season.

As for the debate about the use of substitues, I feel that Hoffman should have been brought on much sooner, and Adi deployed at 13. McCloud’s passing was wayward enough to rob us of the opportunity to run onto the ball and build momentum, and Hoffman showed, to me, a real hunger to get involved. And while Bosman had a bad day at the office, I’m still convinced a Bosman/Jacobs combo would have had a better chance at creating something than a Jacobs/Terblanche combo.

  • A few other thoughts:

Based on this weekend’s performance, I am looking forward to the Stormers/Crusaders match rather more than the next Sharks game. Should make for an enthralling contest, particularly the SBW vs. JDV face-off!

Given the treatment he’s received at the hands of Province management, I thought Lionel Cronje really stood up and gave a good account of himself. It would appear that contrary to Morne’s words earlier the season, the Stormers are in fact *not* just one injury away from having their campaign derailed (except maybe if an injury to Dewald Duvenhage means a run-on spot for Ricky).

That lock pairing of Bekker/Elstadt is putting the Springbok incumbents of Matfield/Botha to shame.

Their coaching staff are top class and made us look average technically. We need to be sharper and more technical, we too need a more varied attack with better decision making, a better set piece with better tactics on how to use our big runners more effectively. There can be no excuses, but there are now clear areas we need to address and we cannot afford to not to. Cape Town take a bow, how beautiful and respectful to give your team and opposition a packed stadium.

However, the weaknesses in our game and some of our players are just too glaringly bloody obvious to ignore and candy-coating that does nobody any favours.

I for one can´t see us winning a semi-final play-off, even if we make it that far, but anyone out there who don´t mind bullshitting themselves are welcome to feel otherwise, of course ;-) .

Spot on. And while we are at it, let’s put to bed this crap about the Stormers have yet to tour. What are we expecting? That they will be shown up as the fraud of a rugby team that they are?

They reached 2 finals last year and beat us comprehensively twice so far – this time with Lambie, Deysel and every single other fan favourite available.

I hope Plumtree won’t be floating any nonsense such as the players being naïve again.
He needs to realise that he was outplayed by the opposition coaching team on this one.

We were beaten a combination of things, including rush defence, lineout dominance, rucking and midfield superiority. None of this should have been unexpected – but we didn’t have a plan to counter this.

And on the midfield – focusing on Bosman (who was very poor) misses the poor quality ball that the forwards were securing and the head-high passes that Mcleod was shovelling to Lambie, who couldn’t do much with it.

The JDV try-making tackle was made as much by those factors as by the tackle itself.

  • Sharks are hurting, Plum went as far as to call the game embarrassing.

What was interesting however was Plum’s comments for next week against the Brumbies – he wants to bliksem them good and propper.

Plum usually never talks like this but I expect an almighty roggering of the Brumbies next week.

  • We were outwitted, we were outplayed, and we were completely outclassed. But that does not mean that we are washed up and kla!
All of the mistakes we made yesterday can be fixed. And I certainly believe that Mr Plumtree will be intent on fixing them. He will make it his life’s purpose to fix them. It’s his reputation and lifeblood on the line too.
In my exceedingly humble opinion, what is needed now by the Sharks is a complete “defrag”. The slate needs to be washed clean and we need to start at Square One and go back to basics… basic handling, basic tactics, basic discipline.
The ability to beat the Stormers was on the field yesterday – talent in the genes and DNA of every player in the black and white. Every player on that pitch at Newlands knew that we NEEDED to win. But not every player believed that we COULD win. Desperation prevailed over common sense and panic manifested as a result.
And in a game we all knew was going to rest on possession, we failed to retain it. Plain and simple.
The Sharks are not the sum of their failures. Demoralised they may be, and are indeed allowed to be today, but tomorrow begins a new day and a new mission – getting back the mindset that is able to produce some of the most exciting rugby this country has ever been witness to.
A good regroup now, combined with a break over the bye weekend, will set us up for the home straight and what should be a run of victories against inferior teams. And I include the Bulls in that sweeping statement. And the Tahs, even though they are sneaking up on us.
What we, as supporters, must not do now is give up. If we give up, how can we reasonably expect our team to go out there and do what is required of them? A loss against the Stormers like yesterday’s is always going to sting, especially when we know what we are capable of. But pain does not last forever, unless we allow ourselves to dwell on it.
People working together, united in the same cause, have overthrown governments and changed the face of human history. Sharks supporters pulling together, rooting for our team, encouraging them and willing them to do better, can lift them up to the place they need to be right now and show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and a glimmer of silver too.
We all need to be Good Samaritans in the coming weeks and pick our Boys’ battered collective ego up out of the gutter, dust it off and carry it for a while until they can run with it and regain their momentum.
I’m up for the task. And I know the majority of you out there are up for it too. So join me (the gal from the Boerstad) at King’s Park this weekend if you are able to, and FILL THAT STADIUM…
The Sharks need us. Let’s not let them down.

  • Completely out played. Well done Stormers, we do wish you luck for next week.

As for the Sharks, the first problem is their centers. Adi plays better at outside centre than inside. Bosman got a huge achilles heel and the Sharks are killing of Stef in the most brutal way possoble, playing him in the wrong position.

Second our loose forwards got dominated. We needed Bismarck there to compete. The combination of Daniel, Alberts and Kanko fails miserably when playing physical teams. They are all stand out of the breakdown or wait in the backline instead of competing at the breakdown.

This is the best Sharks team IMO for the rest of the competition and until Mcloed gets a wake up.. I think JLP is a first centre who can tackle and does break the game line. Mcloed is out of form and Hoffman is actually playing quite well.

    15 Ludik
    14 Odwa
    13 Adi
    12 JLP
    11 Jp
    10 Lambie
    9 Hoffman
    8 Kanko
    7 Deysal
    6 Alberts
    5 Hargreves
    4 Sykes
    3 Jannie
    2 Bismarck
    1 Beast

Smit, Eugene, Mostert, Botes, Mcloed, Mvovo, Stef

We have the ability to bounce back, but its concerning that we have fallen into the old bliksem hulle mentality.

It was not passion that was missing yesterday, it was technique and tactical nous. We need to take the right lessons from this loss.

You can channel a sense of shamed outrage into 1 or 2 victories, but you can’t win a campaign on it. I really expect more from our coaching staff then that response – I hope it will emerge over the next few days.

  • Looking back on the game The Stormers had a very good look at what the saders had done They ran the 3 loosies and the 2 centres at our centres JDV and SBW got the glory but in both games it was the loose forwards who caused our centres problems
What concerns me is that none of our centres tackled the Stormers back When Strauss was there he owned the inside channel but now no one is owning that channel and thats why the 5 on 2/3 attach will work against us every time
I also think that the Sharks were aware that the stormers were going to have a go at them physically and were told not to retaliate cos Paper has the reputation of going for players that retaliate. Hence the CJ Burger and Elstat attacks. IN days gone by we would have taken all of them out!!!!Lastly you cannot play Wolla and Vic as flankers together-Wolla and Vic play the same game and after Keegan left the field we were not competitive at all in the loose Yes Wolla had some nice runs but there was no trio work
Stormers playing 2 open siders killed us when last did we have 20 odd turnovers-12 loosing the ball in contact and i think 13 t/o and that was the game folks
Moving forward Yes next week must be a 5 pointer no issue and to do this we need to change a few things-maybe not personnel but playing method. I think Plum is a good enough coach to notice that some teams have our number and we need to be sure that when we come up against the stormers in the semi that the result will be different and when we come up against the saders in the final that we win that too
The Sharks remind me a lot of Tottenham Hotspur great midfield and nothing else We have a great pack an ok S/H-who I think is overplayed- a great F/H and nothing else!!!!!
I was told the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!!! Thats our midfield There needs to be changes Adi is a 13 not a 12 so play him there move oupa to 12 or something radical play odwa at 12 his one on one defence is great and he runs good lines on defence and attack. Wingers make great centres
    my 2 cents worth

  • we could not believe our luck in CT when we heard Bissy was on bench. With Botes out it was thought to be a foregone conclusion that Bissy would start to assist at the breakdowns. As for Adi, what a waste of a talent considering what the sharks have in that squad. I said flo would have a free luch with Bissy and Botes not there. You guys were lucky P Grant did not play, 50 would have been easy. Be careful of how you select going forward, especially against the Bulls and Cheetahs…steggmann and brussow will hurt you again . see rugby 365….plum calling it men against boys…stormers are the real deal…Smit needs to retire and allow Bissy to play…Burden showed in the earlier game he too is wasted because of the ongoing accomodation of a skipper in decline.PDV better wake up and smell the coffee…or boks will be in same boat as sharks.

I think a Oupa Adi combo would work well Or maybe a Odone Adi combo. After watching the Sharks XV yesterday I think its time for Swannie to make a S15 debut Riaan Adi would also work very well But the S15 side need Swannie so if i was choosing I would use Oupa at 12 Adi At 13
However even given the changes we need to change our way of playing and here Hugh must step up. I remember years back Just after we won the currie cup for the first time I was at a breakfast when Mac spoke and had a question and answer section he was asked why did he change the “banana boys” style of playing He said he got tired of loosing and started to study how the french and Aussies were playing He talked Stansky into running the ball straight up and the rest is history
For us Hugh must come up with a change of plan with both our attack and defence that will get us over the gain line every time and bring in the loose forwards to create the space for Adi to shine
Just a thought Use it Dont use it

  • Plumtree said that the players must now come up with the answers in how they could do better. My advice would be that the Sharks must go on a serious buying spree for midfielders that can take the punch. The “Old Boys Club” in the team may cost the team a few trophies along the line!! And by the way, Meyer Bosman was not a good buy at all. I also heard a rumour that another has been is on his way from Europe!! So, Sharks management take it from a supporter’s view that if you cannot buy class players, go for a hunt on the country’s good U/21′s!! There must be a solution. Half of yesterday’s tries were soft ones that could have been prevented!!

Two complaints from a Stormers perspective.

    1. CJ is a tool. Looks like he got away with some vuilgat stuff yesterday. So far. That kind of brainless thuggery can cost the Stormers the match.

    2. Not a biggie, but de Jongh should occasionally consider PASSING THE DAMN BALL to the oke next to him who happens to be in acres of space.

  • I don’t know if we are in or out of title contention, but I do know that we need to play out of our skins to finish as strong as possible…

From a technical aspect our locks and hookers need to do a lot of hard work to develop a synergy and a mentality of domination…
Andries Bekker is a big unit, but what makes him so special is not the half inch he has on Ross Skeate, but the technical nous and reading of the lineout – we need to develop a total lineout playbook that has variance. I will be very surprised if big Gerhard Mostert does not get selected in the match 22 from now on… Plum likes Skeate because of “intelligence” and I think he spoke his way into the match against The Stormers because of perhaps knowing the lineout system – Skeate did not pitch up to the game, and looks unable to put a crsip solid tackle together – he tackles like a tall James Small – collar here, shirt sleeve there. Skeate needs to be honest with himself and up his game big time.

John Smit did nothing for his reputation, and allowed a little pikey to get the better of him… John Smit – my man, this is your last season here – but do we allow him to carry on playing, or do we start building now for next season? Bismarck, Kyle Cooper and Burden are our hookers and Kyle/Burden to rotate on the bench and get a mandatory 20 min in each game.

Locks and hookers need some face time.

    Loose forwards:

Ryan Kankowski: Where are you? Are you able to get go forward ball, do you know how to counter ruck with venom? Do you want to be a forward, or a back? Because maybe you should audition at centre we seem to have a problem there… (more to follow) – Ryan has not shown up all season, sure he scored a try here and there, but he needs to be more involved, if he cannot, then it is time we accept that Ryan is a super sub employed when the game gets loose and the real forwards have set the platform…

    Botes / Daniel / Deysel / Alberts:

I disagree that Alberts and Deysel are the same players, as Deysel is a more dynamic number 7, and before injury was the leading counter ruck forward we have – thus he is more tight on defence than Alberts who stands pillar defence – thus Alberts and Deysel do compliment each other – Alberts had the highest tackle count for last season, Deysel most clean outs and most running meters… What we do need is a number 8 that can get tight too – Is this Alberts, is this Daniel, is this Marcel in the XV team?

    But my loose trio is:

    6) Daniel
    7) Deysel – lineout forward also (lets not forget that)
    8) Alberts

Our management is stubborn and is one dimensional with team policy, making it an honour to get a look into the senior team (play for the jersey mentality) – but there are some shining stars in the junior teams who could out play one or two of our current centres… Our centres need work, and Stef needs to be regarded less for his leadership, and more for his ability – I played centre, I may not be world class, but I can see that Stef is the weak link there, he places far too much pressure on Meyer Bosman, Bosman is in fact defending two channels as Stef drifts too much – he is not a centre, Meyer Bosman is a centre, and he is a centre with a gift to distribute – I would put Adi on his outside and look at blooding in our Vodacom Cup boys into the senior team – Swannie can pass a ball and has shown signs even last season that he can up his ante – he needs to be allowed to put pressure on Meyer Bosman – Adi and co must be allowed to put pressure on Stef…

As for captaincy I would put Deysel as my captain – I say this because he is currently not in Bok contention and he is a calm guy who leads from the front – he commands respect from friend and foe – if not him I would look at Ali Hargreaves – Ali is more or less in Bok contention, but even though he is an astute rugby man, I feel he commands less respect than Deysel – with power of delegation given to the younger long term players in the system you can kill two birds with one stone – Smit and Stef i.e. Leadership – both can play from the bench as cover, or for the time being be dropped altogether…

Does Plum and co have the balls to do this, or am I in the wrong?

As for management – we lack in technical skills, Mark Steele is a world class conditioning coach and you can see that our boys are fit, but what you can also see is a dogmatic coaching theology in place on attack, but no clear defensive pattern – we do drift, but when there is no defensive marshall at centre our communication breaks down and one player is left with three defensive positions to cover, it is not possible…

Guys this is just my thoughts and I would like to use this as a discussion on where to from here… We don’t want youngsters to be left out in the cold whilst old timers get game time and I don’t want to see youngsters overlooked for old mercenaries for next season…

    15. Louis Ludik
    14. JPP
    13. Adi Jacobs
    12. Meyer Bosman V/C (Defensive Marshall – currently Stef)
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    10. Pat Lambie
    9. Conrad Hoff
    8. Alberts
    7. Deysel (C)
    6. Daniel
    5. Ali Hargreaves
    4. Steven Sykes

  • @McLovin (Comment 185) : 1,77m. So average height I guess. (Around 5ft 10 or so). There’s a fair amount of muscle under that shirt, I can assure you! He’s bulked up somewhat since the Currie Cup final, which I think helps make him something of a tackling machine, because the opposition completely underestimates his impact, and, as you so rightly point out, he looks too cute to be considered dangerous!

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 179) : Totally with you on Oupa. Super rugby is showing his age and lack of centre experience. Jean’s 1st try was due to Oupa drifting. Secondly, Pls rest Big Willem!! Jean is back, so lets rotate. 3rdly Keegan was beaten 6-0,6-0 on the ground… concerning as counter rucking was also not working…

But, be honest… the Stormers came with their AAA-game and were never going to lose this one. their intensity was up for 100% of the game. Give respect where its due. We will bounce back, but have to make changes.

How long have we been saying and how long do we still need to say this, drop that clown at inside centre!!!
We have the best pack of fowards but will get nowhere if we do not get quality centres.

Bosman is probably still at the Cape Town Police station laying charges against JDV because he got screwed big time by him.

When in Bash and Reece going to do something about this problem, probably never.

We got humiliated, its like losing 4-0 in football.

If we are going to keep selecting him I’m going to throw my toys out of the cot! Enough is enough, our backline is stalemate with him in it. Note JDV 1st try from yesterday, Stef should have stayed and helped Meyer tackle JDV. There was one attacker outside of JDV and Stef had Odwa next to him how could cover that attacker. Stef should have went for JDV. Not saying Bosman didn’t have a bad game that he did, but I think Stef is our problem in the backline. He has been consistantly kak.

Could even have resulted in a try against us if Aplon didn’t go for the drop. He missed a trick, he should have retired after the Currie Cup. Would have been remembered as a huge Legend. I’m just starting to dislike him more and more now.

Sharks were beaten by stormers and I don’t like it,but when it comes down to a choice between stormers or bulls or cheetahs or lions vs aus and kiwi teams, then I hope we can beat them.
Sharks must win ALL their games and fellow sa teams ALL their games vs kiwi and aus teams..then I’m happy :-)

  • Its ridiculous that we lost those three… They were special. (Barrit, Murray, Steyn) – Sharks rugby seems to always have some volatile undertone. To lose young players is a crime, to lose young players and replace them with carthorses, I am not so sure. Had Barrit and Waylon stayed and played for a decade and a bit they would still be younger than Stef. Mull over that for a second or two… Centre combinations are built, not merely put together…
