Newly re-appointed Springbok captain John Smit has been ruled out of rugby for two weeks after picking up a calf strain in the match against the Stormers.
The good news though is that Bismarck du Plessis is back to 100% full fitness and will take the captain’s place in the two jersey for the match against the Brumbies this weekend.
The bad news is that the captaincy will default to Stefan Terblanche (we assume) and this veto any changes that the supporters are calling for in the centre combination.
Other changes that can be expected this weekend is a rest for Willem Alberts after Jean Deysel came back into the Super Rugby fold against the Stormers last weekend.

maybe we can expect a win or two now that Tinky Winky strained her calf. He should be ashamed for making such a d**s of himself, and in the process costing the sharks their season. I will bet any takers a grand that beast and the du plessis’s are gone after this season.
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 1) :
I will take that bet..
… Is this a relative of Megatron?
No Train smash here, we`ve got great back-up!!!
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 1) : Now how the heck did John cost us our season? What utter rubbish. Think it was our centres and our Locks.
When will Adi get a start? Hope this week Bosman is on the bench.
@Puma (Comment 6) :
Adi wont start at inside, I really cannot see it..
But who knows?!
OMG. I must admit I wondered if I was on the wrong site after reading the first comment.
Standards are dropping on SW.
@Puma (Comment 6) : “like”
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I know he will probably be on the bench again. Pity cause really think we need Adi to start at outside centre. Bring Swannie back and play him at inside centre or even JLP cause Bosman just not doing it at all. His defence is very poor.
@Puma (Comment 5) : @wpw (Comment 8) :
Plum nailed it at the beginning of the season, tall poppy syndrome
@Morné (Comment 11) : Plum was spot on.
Jeez, it is one thing to read that nonsense on keo, but here on a Sharks site is just not on.
@WPW
I won’t even comment about that.. I might just get myself a ban or something.
I know another person that just made a ‘box’ out of himself
Sorry to hear Smitty is out. Hope he recovers soon and comes back even stronger.
Apologies guys. Only spotted that comment now. It’s gone.
What the hell is going on here?
@puma. when no one is tackling, and people are making silly mistakes, and their is a general slapgat attitude, it is normally a morale issue. Would you like working in a company, where you clearly know you are the prime candidate for a raise, and the boss’s son keeps getting promoted? Wouldn’t office morale start to fade? I think so. When I say he is making a d**s of himself, I simply mean to say that he is making a complete and utter d**s of himself.
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 1) : Dude!
And the ‘box’ is at it again, almost could be grant10′s boet.
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 18) : Change your name to GeneralBullshit please.
@wpw (Comment 8) : @Ben (Comment 21) : have to agree, yellow for generalwhatever.
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 18) :
Here is the thing about making a point.
You can make a point, substantiate it with means other than going gutter and the point will be respected and usually debated.
I reckon the majority of South Africans might actually agree with you, but in the way you try and state the ‘fact’ (which is more just a point of conjecture and subjective opinion) you lose the higher ground and effectively the point you are trying to make.
You still obviously make your point as can be seen above, but so does a certain (or most) politicians I read about on news websites. So if you want to make a point without being taken seriously, you are winning, and perhaps that is your ‘point’.
The downside of this of course no-one will ever take whatever point you try to make seriously in future.
Again I see this from politicians and perhaps thats their goal, and I almost guarantee what I am writing here means nothing to you.
The irony is, that is exactly what you have achieved – what you said means nothing.
Good luck with that, I am out, need to feed the family!
Damn you people are abussive. I thought different oppinions were encouraged. Stop taking yourselves so seriously, its much more fun.
@GeneralSpecific (Comment 24) : Although I still do not agree with your 2nd comment. You would have been far better off making that comment 1st and never making your 1st comment.
*sigh*
Like I said, standards have dropped.
Ok guys I am sorry. Just a bit bored and a bit tired and still upset about saturday. Really thought we would take it. Outbursts wont happen again. Im out
Are we sure John Smit is not to blame for global warming also? The credit crunch even? I’m sure he’s been spotted in and around banks quite often.
Wpw. Standards?
Richard, what is our solution in the midfield? Bosman and Stef is not making it.
So what about Carter’s injury? Are the Crusaders pulling a Rassie?
@mclovin. Funny
This doesn’t sound to serious an injury. Not even a flesh wound as far as Smit is concerned, I’m sure.
well i am of the opinion that the center pairing should be swannie and adi
swannie playing good rugga AT THE SHARKS xv
problem is smitty out injured so stef to be capt
also locks have not been pulling their weight m sorry to say and i am a huge sykes fan , but i get the feeling since it has become known he will be leeving his standard of play has dropped , hope im wrong
i would play mostert and hargreaves with sykes on the bench
@sharks_lover (Comment 34) : Don’t the Sharks have some wunderkind centre in the juniors somewhere? I’m sure they have, but can’t recall the name.
dues to injuries etc , this is the team i would play
15 ludick
14 jpp
13 stefan
12 swannie/jlp
11 mvovo
10 lambie
09 hoffman
08 kanko
07 alberts
06 deysel
05 hargreaves
04 mostert
03 jannie
02 bissy
01 beast
16 burden
17 van staden
18 sykes
19 daniel
20 mcleod
21 jlp/swannie
22 odwa
1
@McLovin (Comment 35) : they do but he presently with the bok under 20 squad as far as i saw last
paul jordaan , said to be one of the best talenst in SA in many a year
he is a 12/10 awesome player
infact check out the clip of him on youtube , boks under18 vs england under18
he was 17 at the time
he was a star for the boks 7′s this year too till he had a leg injury but is over that
how i would love to see jordaan at 12 next to pat
@sharks_lover (Comment 34) : swanie and other juniors is valuable to sharksxv semi this weekend and not not nessasary for brumies game. Bosie or even jlp can do the stuff. Hope to see some of the jonger generation into the mix after vodacom cup is won..
@sharks_lover (Comment 37) : Saw Jordaan playing sevens and he certainly looks like something special. But isn’t there another one? Or maybe I’m confused.
a center combo of jordaan and mvovo would be interesting lol, although not sure mvovo’s distribution is that great
@McLovin (Comment 40) : there are , i just cant remember them all lol
thats where rob should come in
@franshark (Comment 39) : Here we go. Piet Lindeque? Or is he too young still?
no piet can be used
but there was a better player wynand pienaar , just dissapeared?? hell a serious talent @ 13/15 he was and only 21
Had a Shite day back at worked today, the province guys are still celebrating big time, news papers everywhere already crowning the Stormers s15 Champs ( Cape Town not a great place to be if you support the sharks and they lose the weekend against WP!!!)
One interesting point everyone is making is that Big Wil Alberts was very ineffective Saturday , we all know that he is perhaps a bit tired, but why does the Sharks not use him more as a decoy runner, gaps will appear surely because the teams are starting to put more than one defender on him every time he gets the ball. I know that when J Smit is not playing, the feel they MUST play Stefan , but surely this must come to an end now after this weekend, make Alberts Captain if you must, at least he will lead by example!!!!
@McLovin (Comment 43) : Now there’s a talent. Piet Lindeque. I forgot about him completely.
@morne1 (Comment 46) : hargreaves can capt
or deysel who just capt the VC team
@Ben (Comment 47) : him and paul jordaan could be a brilliant center pairing
@McLovin (Comment 43) : not to young, maybe a good cc season a bid later this year and next year we have a good mix with young and experience
@sharks_lover (Comment 48) : or even swanie, did a good job of it in the qauter final
@sharks_lover (Comment 49) : Oh yes!! Can’t wait for that. Especially Paul Jordaan, I dearly hope the Sharks can hold on to him.
@sharks_lover (Comment 42) : Heimar Williams is another prospect at 12. Lindeque is still too raw, his time will come though. Jerome Pretorius is the Sharks XV starting 13 and not doing badly there at all.
@sharks_lover (Comment 44) : Is Wynand not injured then?
@war1 (Comment 53) : u mean not badly
@Ben (Comment 52) : ben end of may jordaan fully joins the sharks
he wont be going anywhere
@franshark (Comment 50) : If you are expecting Lindeque to play a lot Currie cup this year I think you will be disappointed. Players coming through well at Lambie’s age are very much the exception than the rule.
@franshark (Comment 55) : Sorry, I dont follow, that is what I said.
@war1 (Comment 57) : yea and as usual players like bosie and jlp will want to claim there pond of meat while the others are on wc duty
@war1 (Comment 57) : Howzit Warren? I think the only young centre that might play CC is Paul Jordaan, well I hope so.
Wynand Pienaar is back… saw him play 15 for the Duikers two weeks ago and he was on fire.
We have Bosman, Swannie, Adi, Joubert and Terblanche.
I don’t think the youngsters will get a look in..
@Ben (Comment 60) : It’s not a good idea to push the guys too far too young. Paul may have the temperament to do it but that is for the coaches to decide. He still has another year of sevens next year too. I suspect he will be fighting it out with Heimar Williams for the under 21 inside centre spot and he is still eligible for under 19 too.
@robdylan (Comment 61) : Good news, did he play 15 or 13? Is he still under 21 this year?
If I were coach: put emphasis on a systematic, pragmatic demolition of Brumbies. Ludik rests to have Stef move to fullback. Adi comes into outside centre, Bosman stays, gets chance to play with a specialist outside him. Conrad Hoff gets his chance to play scrummie. Daniel at 8, Deysel at 7, Botes at 6, Willem gets rest. Kanko employed as a supersub. Mostert at 5, Sykes at 4, Hargreaves supersub. Beast, Bismarck, Jannie. Emphasis on demolition…
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 65) : I like that team. I would start with Hargs instead of Sykes though.
Sykes can come off the bench, yes. Mostert to 4…
@war1 (Comment 64) : read the comment
@war1 (Comment 63) : Yes I agree but like I said I think he is the only young centre that might get a look in with the CC side. Not saying it will happen but he is the most likely to get a chance if we go that route, imo.
@war1 (Comment 58) : sorry dude, I was still answering your q before the site was gone on my side. There’s no not in your comment
…. Late but there u go
@robdylan (Comment 68) : I honestly don’t know how I missed that the 1st time. Anyway I think he turns 22 this year, not so?
@franshark (Comment 70) : Thanks, there is one there now. I’m really sukkeling on this phone today.
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 65) : yea like the sound to that, vovo also for a start
@war1 (Comment 72) : no worries
Alberts surely should be rested, with deysel coming in.
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 67) : Cool, u gonna send it to Plum?
The whole team is resting the following weak, the coaching staff will not rest to many this week. Will wanne make a point
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 67) : Love that team.
See carter is out
@franshark (Comment 79) : Too bad, gives the Crusaders an excuse for when they lose.
@franshark (Comment 79) : Peter Grant should be fit to play.
@McLovin (Comment 80) : What excuse will the Stormers use?
@Ben (Comment 82) : None. When we lose we simply say to the opposition: ‘Well done, the better team won’.
No excuses.
@McLovin (Comment 83) : Good stuff. That’s the opposite of what the Bulls usually use.
IMO move Stefan to fullback and Ludick to bench as Terblanche needs to be captain…Give Adi Jacobs a start @ 13, that’s long time overdue and it may also help in giving our starving wings some quality ball…Bar this all that our “highly rated” pack can give quality ball on the front foot, also mention to Mcleod that if he is not effective in the first 45 min or so, that he will be replace as Hoffman has shown glimpses of quick service and is hungry to play…
@Charlie (Comment 85) : I think Hoffman should be given a start.
The team just feels balanced with that proposed line up… And it seems we have buy in from the fans! Trust Plum calls it. I am starting to feel positive for a strong finish leading up to playoffs. Cheers for now gents.
@McLovin (Comment 83) : same what we said, with some strings atached
Smit-calf strain
The Sharks is in a must win situation and this happens
Somebody get my tinfoil hat plzzzzz
Mind-bottling!
@Ben (Comment 86) : Short of agree, but I doubt that Plum would split the 9 & 10 as Lambie had only made his comeback just after a month…The centre pair is more of a problem area, must remember with Kockett gone, the pressure on Mcleod in being consistent is not so big anymore, but more of a comfort zone created by coaching staff in not giving Hoffman enough game time…
@robdylan (Comment 61) : eish great news rob , i reckon thids kids a serious prospect
@sharks_lover (Comment 92) : he struggled to get back in form after breaking his leg last year, which is why he didn’t feature for the Sharks XV this season. Reckon he’ll push hard for Currie Cup inclusion, though
Am I the only one that thinks that JPP could do the job at center? AT least then we get to ave Mvovo on the field for 80 too.
PS…Sorry to hear about John – he will be missed..with Bissy back no hope of the line outs coming right now.
@robdylan (Comment 93) :
Rob, who and what are the Duikers these days?
@robdylan (Comment 93) : thanks bro , didnt know he broke his leg, i really rate this kid, i know it may be saying much , but watching him play i saw a bit of cullen in him
Bosman @ 10 and Lambie @ 12
@Salmonoid (Comment 95) : he he – good question. A bit of an exhibition team, I guess.
The curtain-raiser to the Sharks-Canes game was a match between the Duikers and UKZN. The Duikers seemed to be sort of an invitational team made up of club and Academy players on the fringes of Vodacom Cup selection.
They thrashed UKZN
Want the team list?
Sorry to hear Captain we need you more than ever 2 weeks is a long time for our team but Oupa Stef has done us well in the past so faith i do and must have for our team
Sharks forever
@robdylan (Comment 98) :
Yes, please post the team.
@Salmonoid (Comment 100) : I’ve got the match program… will dig out the team list in a bit
@robdylan (Comment 101) : rob mate , any news on when exactly jordaan joins the sharks?? hell if lambie can make it so fast into the senior side i am sude jordaan can
we need some magic in our backline next to lambie
@sharks_lover (Comment 102) : sorry mate – I don’t know
@robdylan (Comment 103) : thanks boet
@sharks_lover (Comment 104) : Paul Treu’s feeling is that the lad will play Currie Cup this year…. Then again, it’s easy for him to say that!
