Former Sharks outside centre Waylon Murray has been dealt a cruel blow, with an ankle injury sustained against the Chiefs set to rule him out of the Lions’ upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Murray has been omitted from the Lions team to face the Cheetahs this weekend, with his place going to former WP and Stormers centre Dylan des Fountain. The switch in the number 13 jersey is just one of several changes that coach John Mitchell has made this week as he desperately seeks for a combination able to turn around his side’s woeful season.

Joining Des Fountain in making a maiden Super Rugby start for the Lions is hooker Edgar Marutlulle, who comes in for Martin Bezuidenhout. Frst-choice number 2, Bandise Maku, is also out injured and likely to miss the tour. Further changes see Kevin Buys, Rory Kockott, David de Villiers and Joshua Strauss come into the starting team, with two other former Sharks in Mike Rhodes and Pat Cilliers losing their starting places for this week’s game.

Lions: 15 Michael Killian, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Dylan des Fontain, 12 Doppies la Grange (captain), 11 Deon van Rensburg, 10 Burton Francis, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 David de Villiers, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Edgar Marutlulle, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Patric Cilliers, 18 Franco van der Merwe, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Elton Jantjies, 22 Jaco Taute.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : In my opinion he hasnt justified the hype. He was good in the currie cup, but like Elton, hasnt made a real impact in super rugby with his biggest contribution so far being THAT attempted tackle on JP. Also not overly surprised Pat Cillier has lost his place (alhtough maybe the Lions are resting him). Hes a good currie cup player but his scrumming has been exposed and the Lions are finding out why he hasnt played more for the Sharks at this level.
