Keegan Daniel in hot water

Sharks flanker Keegan Daniel – who many feel was robbed of the man of the match award in Saturday’s Super Rugby win over the Brumbies – has been cited for a dangerous tackle and will attend a SANZAR disciplinary hearing in Durban today.

The 26-year-old loose forward, who made his Springbok debut last year and is in the reckoning to make the South African World Cup squad, stands accused of contravening law 10.4 (e) in committing a late and dangerous hit against Brumbies inside centre Christian Lealiifano in the 71st minute of Saturday’s game, which the Sharks won 34-16. The offence was not picked up by the referee and also didn’t appear to be shown on the regular broadcast footage, since no evidence of it seems to have yet come into the public domain. I do recall hearing the commentators say something about the incident shortly after it happened, though, so presumably there must be grounds on which the hearing may proceed.

Should Daniel be suspended, it would stretch the Sharks’ loose forward reserves somewhat, given that both Ryan Kankowski and Jacques Botes are currently battling injury. Mitigating this somewhat is the promising form that 20-year-old Marcell Coetzee showed in his brief Super Rugby debut late in the game.

In other disciplinary news, Hurricanes scrumhalf Tyson Keats has been found guilty of a tip tackle and suspended for four weeks.

  • He hit the guy with his shoulder (no arms in the tackle), and because Lealiifano ws already being tackled by someone else and was on his way down the “tackle” from Keegan ended up being a bit high too!

It was when Lealiifano was about 5m out from our tryline (the wonders of PVR  )

  • I didn’t see the incident, but at once stage I was thinking that Daniel is playing a bit too rough. I hope he is cleared and luckily we have our bye coming up and all other injuries might be sorted out before the next game.

  • Different topic: PDiv really dislikes the SHARKS, he is the one that is negotiating with the Bulls, Stormers and Ruan’s club to have Ruan released early so that he can play Super Rugby. The Stormers already have an awesome backline and a good scrumhalf, the Bulls have Fourie and Hougaard…! Ruan is at home with the Sharks, he has played with our guys all his life and would adjust quickly if he would join us – surely that also needs to be considered. PDiv is so inlove with the Stormers that he would do anything to try get them a trophy! Hope Rudolph pulls a fast one and gets Ruan to join the SHARKS…we need him, Mcleod has lost focus.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 10) : I agree. First playing in a new union takes time to adjust, plus living in a new environment also takes time. Time is not what Ruan has to get used to the tempo of Super Rugby. Moving to the Sharks would make the transition so much easier. Same goes for Steyn.

  • I think that a lot of people, including Plum, underestimates Keegan’s abilities and commitment a lil bit. He plays full out for 80 mins leaving a definite impact on the game as a whole. I dont see him as a mere impact player. He should and must hold a more permanent starting berth in the Sharks setup.

  • In regards to Ruan Pienaar. The way I’ve heard the rumour/news is that PdV wants Ruan to play at flyhalf and we know that Plum doesn’t do what others tell him to do (read Smit).

If the flyhalf thing were even remotely true then surely he would go somewhere where there is a flyhalf needed not the unions where the two probable flyhalves currently play?

  • @Ben (Comment 38) : Actually it was PdV, before Ruan was a Bok, and while playing for the Baby Boks at the U20 World Cup, PdV (head coach) moved Ruan to 10 and Morne Steyn to 12. Delport (9 from WP) was the captain and starting 9 so that is why Ruan was moved. So PdV was the first coach to move Ruan to flyhalf.

  • @Ben (Comment 45) : Actually I think that PdV was in love with Delport, making him captain even though Ruan was a stronger scrumhalf. Ruan played so well PdV had to find a spot for him but could not drop his captain.

Also remember the timing with Jake, we were very thin at flyhalf, with Butch coming back from injury, Morne Steyn had not made his deput, Crazy Jaco was not cutting it at 10 anymore. Basically he had nobody after Butch at 10 (just back from long term injury), and the 9 birth was pretty well locked up with FdP and RJ. I am sure that it was circumstances that drove Jake to touting Ruan as the next great 10.
