Lions coach John Mitchell has opted to hand Butch James the all-important flyhalf jersey for this weekend’s Super Rugby clash against the Waratahs in Sydney – this notwithstanding the fact that Elton Jantjies delivered his best performance in some time against the Brumbies last weekend.

Bok tourist Jantjies finds himself on the bench this week, along with another of last week’s starting backs, Dylan Des Fountain. The return of regular captain Doppies le Grange sees Alwayn Hollenbach shifted to outside centre this week, with the former Port Natal boy reclaiming the number 12 jersey, as well as the captain’s armband. Loose forward Josh Strauss was the man who lead the Lions to their first ever win in Canberra.

The Waratahs are always next to impossible to beat in Sydney and will present a far sterner challenge to the Lions than the Brumbies did, who in the midst of a real crisis. James would appear to be the right man for this particular job and will do his Springbok World Cup chances no harm at all if he manages to guide the young Lions side to yet another famous victory.

Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Alwyn Hollenbach, 12 Doppies la Grange (captain), 11 Deon van Rensburg, 10 Butch James, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Joshua Strauss, 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Warren Whiteley, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Rory Kockott, 21 Elton Jantjies, 22 Dylan des Fountain.

  • Butch and Doppies next to each other… Solid as hell, but not sure it offers enough variety.

I’d like to see Butch outside Jantjies at 10, but I understand that the coach can’t completely change things just after Butch arrived and Jantjies returned.

  • Let’s hope they can carry the same atitude into the game for the Tahs..

If Mapoe’s defence were better I’d move him to 13 and bring in Chavanga.

Also let’s not kid ourselves Josh will eventually Capt the side he may aswell start now.
