Has HSM moved into the Bester category?

HSM has gone into player management

Andre Bester, launched a website some years ago as, and I quote “South Africa’s only independent rugby website that serves the interests of local unions, clubs and schools.” That there is an “independent” website is a good thing, but unfortunately his website is anything but independent. The website shamelessly promotes the qualities and achievements of players who just happen to be managed by Andre Bester’s firm. Oh as long as the player doesn’t cross him of course then the articles about the player take a very different slant.

Giving oneself a supposed independent forum to make or break the future of players is not really ethical but it seems another company has just jumped on the same wagon.

HSM (Highbury Safika Media – publishers of the SA Rugby magazine and the website of that short guy) yesterday paraded Luke Watson before the Cape media, launching themselves into the sport management side of the sport. HSM, CEO – Kevin Ferguson, Commercial Director – Shane Keohane, and his brother Mark Keohane the Chief Operating Officer of HSM were at great pains to stress that there will be no conflict of interest created between the magazine, the website and the sports management divisions of the business.

Oh BTW did I mention who graces the cover of SA Rugby magazine this month and is also the poster boy on the pull out section? The answer is so easy that I’m afraid I can’t even promise to give you anything for guessing the answer correctly. Yes it is none other than Luke Watson fresh from two seasons of making a small fortune playing rugby abroad.

I suspect that we will see an increase in players who are represented by HSM gracing the pages of the magazine in the future. I actually enjoyed the magazine until now.

Luke Watson is back in South Africa having signed with HSM and the Southern Kings doing interviews. Luke is advising players that they would serve SA rugby better by staying in SA rather than going to play abroad for financial reasons.

  • Does anyone remember the conflict of interest when Keo and Jake were business partners?? At the time there were a number of articles on Keo promoting Jake as the only worthy candidate for a DOR position at SA Rugby or to replace PDV as Bok coach.

The relationship between Keo and Jake has since soured which means no more pro-Jake articles!!

  • Not sure if there is any conflict of interest here. Yes they will use the magazine to promote their players more than others but that is part of marketing their players. Its a private company and they should be allowed to put their own inetersts before any other.

  • Is this the death of objective sports journalism? I am a fan of SA Rugby magazine…

  • But lets face it… Keo often sings the praises of Sharks players, and Lambie was on the cover of SA Rugby on the previous issue… He too is openly rated by keo as the best flyhalf in SA…

  • @Viking (Comment 17) : No problem with that as long as they then come out and say this is a marketing magazine rather than a news magazine.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : you have been delusional for a while then if you thought SA Rugby magazine was “objective” all along, keo & his minions have been punting the usual suspects for YEARS!

you only see habana, spies, FdP, Smit, jaque fourie, jdv, bismarck, vic, francois steyn and now lambie has been added to the mix with 2 covers in less than 8 months..

have you ever seen a willem alberts cover? i bet you the next player to sign with keo will be Big Joe

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : @Megatron (Comment 21) : Must say that although SA Rugby Magazine has interesting reading it is not a news magazine for me. They select who to put on the cover that will sell the most magz. Their first objective has always been to make as much money now and in the future and not to give all players equal chance of making the cover. They will now also use the magazone to promote their signed players which will allow them to make even more money off the contracts.

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 19) : I guess Keo wouldnt mind having Lambie on his books, and what a way to butter up prospects – cover picture and a feature article.
