The Sharks received a setback this morning as flank Jean Deysel’s SANZAR disciplinary hearing has been pushed back to Tuesday.
The former Lions loose forward was yellow-carded for an illegal clear-out and subsequent fighting during Saturday’s win against the Waratahs. He was duly cited and was originally scheduled to face his hearing today. The expectation is that he should pick up a suspension of anywhere between two and four weeks.
Should Deysel be suspended, it would come as a bitter blow to the Sharks. Having spent almost a year on the sidelines with a knee injury, he was starting to return to the sort of form that made him a Springbok two years ago. More importantly, Deysel’s physical presence in the loose trio allows the workload on Willem Alberts – who has been virtually played into the ground this year – to be lessened.
There is a potential ray of sunshine, though, with Ryan Kankowski a possible returnee against the Cheetahs. The Bok eighthman will probably need to be the fourth loose forward this week, with Marcell Coetzee picking up an ankle injury playing for Collegians on Friday night.
In other injury news, scrumhalf Conrad Hoffman is in doubt for the Cheetahs game having hyperextended his elbow during the opening minutes of Saturday’s game.

so are you boys going to risk Smit at prop again?
Ross cronje’s chance has come
get the lad on the bench and give him 25min
4weeks for Deysal. Watching the game again, it looked so bad. Sorry but we going to have to play the rest of the competition with Keeegs, Kanko, Botes, Alberts and maybe Burden.
I have a feeling we’ll have to do without Deysel for the next two games
While I don’t doubt that Deysel was guilty of foal play, the incident did remind me a lot of the incident where Bakkies was cited for the incident earlier this year when he got Duvenhage in a neck grip as well. If I recall correctly Bakkies got off from that charge.
Bad news that Marcell got himself injured as well.
What I would like to know is “why that moment of insanity” took place in the firts place….a person does not grab someone like that and hold on for dear life (unless you are Bakkies of course) – what he di was stupid and wrong – but my female instincts says something serioulsy provoked him to act that way…do yous agree.
I always like to get the story behind the storey…
We better start planning for the game without Deysel. I cannot see that they will let him off that easy. Probably 2 weeks sounds fair.
@Ice (Comment 7) : Agree with you Ice. It was stupid in the first place. But meybe they will bring in circumstantial evidence that provoked him and he did in defence or somthing. He will still be banned for a game or 2 IMO.
You’re not supposed to react when you’re provoked. I agree that something may have caused his reaction, but unless it was something like, selfdefense, he won’t get much time of. It was stupid to do something like that. I’m unimpressed. We didn’t need this now!
this is a sharks player we are speaking of, he will get like 4 weeks
think back to sharks stormers first match?? bekker looking to take mcleods head off , punching etc in the second encounter, nothing happened to stormer players
sykes got kicked in the face , nothing happend or will
again the citing system is a farce
kanko has gotten shoulder chagres in the face 3 times this year , once if fractured his cheekbone
was someone cited?? NO
@Letgo (Comment 10) : again if you do the crime do the time, no problem with that
problem here is we have seen far worse and everytime nothing happens to other teams
daniel got banned 2 weeks for something that had been done to sharks players etc , they get off scotfree, did daniel get off??
@Ice (Comment 7) : hiyas aunty ice
did you get a hold of the PTA bloke??
@sharks_lover (Comment 13) : We are in talks…
@sharks_lover (Comment 12) : Yes, I’m unhappy that other players get lesser punishments for similar crimes, but we can’t really expect Deysel to get better treatment because of this? Deysel needs to get his full 2 or 4 weeks or whatever it is they usually give for a “head grip” otherwise the same president that has been created before will now be created by this case. Then other teams will be saying the same thing about the Deysel case as we have been saying about other citing and that just doesn’t solve anything.
Let’s see what happens with the other citings this week. In the Harricanes/Force game (I think) there was an almost exact instance to the Deysel one. What will make me really, really unhappy is if nothing happens to the guy in that incident. Then that’s just blatantly biased.
@Letgo (Comment 15) : i am not saying he should not get punnished , but why are the sharks players being used to set examples ??? surely the laws are quite clear??
@Ice (Comment 14) : good to hear hun , hope you come right to see the players
@Letgo (Comment 15) : lets wait and see i agree
there were 3 incidents of the neck grip on the weekend
other one besides the 2 we mentioned is Rhodes , in the Lions match
@sharks_lover (Comment 17) : I doubt – but lets wait..
@Ice (Comment 19) : ok
well hope you come right
i know paul will prolly enforce the membership rules
but like i said it is prolly worth your while to join up
@sharks_lover (Comment 16) : Pretty sure most fans feel that way when one of their team’s players are cited.
@McLovin (Comment 21) : feel what way?? is it wrong to want a fair system??
I could say the same in reverse to you then
stormers okes got away with the dirty play thus you dont have a problem with the way citings are handled??
always 2 sides, but ahain i am not saying deysel should get off
as i said before “Do the crime you must do the time” , Is this really happening though???
@McLovin (Comment 21) : oh and i have stated the same argument when it has happened in matches that does not include the sharks
dirty play is dirty play ,or should one only recognise dirty play when its you own team playing?
@sharks_lover (Comment 23) : You’re preaching to the choir. I’ve been bitching about it for ages.
@grant10 (Comment 1) : As I said earlier, John Smit isn’t the problem at scrum time. Beast also battled at scrum time when he came on. Only when Mostert came onto the park did the Sharks scrum settle. Alistair Hargreaves doesn’t seem to be doing his part at scrum time.
@McLovin (Comment 24) : then good on ya , because its wrong ,
@waje (Comment 25) : uhm no use arguing with grant on that one , grants hate for smit has nothing to do with abillity
guess ur a newby lol, so you wouldnt know
@McLovin (Comment 24) :
it seems you guys will have Earl the pearl at 10 this weekend????
@sharks_lover (Comment 27) : Aaah. Thanks for the warning. So I should take him for Granted.
@sharks_lover (Comment 28) : Why? Is Coleman injured?
@sharks_lover (Comment 28) : Lovely. It should keep Grant 10 happy. Rose 10 against the Rebels.
@waje (Comment 25) : Very true but FS have the in-form props in SA at the moment.
Our front row is gonna be crucial this weekend.
What makes me wonder is, has this been delayed because the citing commissioner wants to see what Rhodes gets? Shows how poor and how inconsistent these guys are.
@Original Pierre (Comment 32) : True but their locks aren’t that strong. So I think the Sharks can keep Hargreaves in for two more games, but then have to look at Mostert at starting.
@Original Pierre (Comment 32) : on form how though , they got squashed in the scrums against the bulls , we did not
Oosthuizen is a lot like CJ , great in the loose play but weak scrummagers
again Oosthuizen gave away 3 penalties last weekend
, far more then any other prop in SA or the super 15
@waje (Comment 34) : Lions concede a lot of penalties around scrum time.
We should select our strongest possible combination and milk it!
@Original Pierre (Comment 36) : True. And Mostert and Alberts loves having a go at the Lions. Like half the Lions team likes lifting their game against the Sharks.
A little off topic, but how did Hoffman do before he was injured?
@waje (Comment 34) : I have been wanting mostert to start for a month now , from some reason he is seen as an impact lock
we need him to start
@molly (Comment 38) : played very well i thought , snappy service
@waje (Comment 37) : remember the reverse is also true
rhodes whitely butch and kockott gona have a go at us too, oh and cilliers
@sharks_lover (Comment 40) : Cool, pity he got injured, I would’ve liked him to have a long run.
@sharks_lover (Comment 11) : dude. He broke his cheek in practice. You want us to cite our own players?
@robdylan (Comment 43) :
Hahahahahaha!!!
@robdylan (Comment 43) : yes
Just watched the video on the web of the incident and it doesn’t look terribly great for Deysel. If he got a suspension, I wouldn’t feel terribly wronged as a supporter.
What does grate me is the fact that both parties weren’t cited.
Deysel had his face ripped open around his eye and there is serious swelling below his eye… Go check the video!

at least two weeks I think
@sharks_lover (Comment 12) : agree but we are the Sharks and they hate us
@robdylan (Comment 43) : oh my then our team will never be sited for anything we will be the mighty Sharks
Stupid. Summed up in one word.
I watched the clip that was posted above, I don’t think it was heinous at all, sure its not part of rugby, but it wasn’t as bad as some of us make it out to be – I will be shocked if he gets more than one week.
In Cage Fighting you can get your opponent to tap out, or you can knock him out – SBW attempted the later and got away no problems – Deysel has an impecable disciplinary record. He is not a thug and I think did go out to seek some revenge there…
He is one of our favourite sons – Come on Wolla – hope you have a lenient call – it wasn’t so bad…
What was worse was some of the tip tackles that weren’t cited… Yellow card is adequate…
