Hoffmann out for 10 weeks

Sharks scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann has been ruled out for ten weeks, after rupturing ligaments in his elbow during the first half of Saturday’s game against the Waratahs.

The injury faces the Sharks with somewhat of a head-scratcher, given that the coaches have thus far resisted the temptation to include a third scrumhalf in the Super Rugby training squad. Former Westville boy Tian Meyer, who left Durban two years ago to join the Pumas, came in to train with the team in pre-season, even joining them on their camp in Phokeng ahead of the season. John Plumtree mentioned after Saturday’s game that he’d have a look at Meyer if Hoffmann’s injury were to prove serious – however, Sharksworld has learned that the player himself has heard nothing from the Sharks as of late yesterday. Should he now be called up, the soonest he could join the squad would be on Thursday – probably too late to be considered against the Cheetahs.

The more likely option to deputise for Charl McLeod this weekend would be Ross Cronje, who has at least tasted Super Ruby before. The 21-year-old Michaelhouse old boy toured with the Sharks in 2009, although he enjoyed precious little game time in the process. He seems to have fallen from grace a little bit of late, with his appearances limited to Vodacom Cup rugby in 2010 and 2011. That said, he’s been part of the structures for ages and is a good communicator, having regularly captained all the sides he’s played in (including the Sharks Under 19 side that won the trophy in 2008).

Should the Sharks opt not to go for either Meyer or Cronje, young Cobus Reinach, son of Bok winger and 400m champion Jaco, could be a shock inclusion.

In other injury news, Ryan Kankowski and Adrian Jacobs should both come back into the selection frame for this weekend’s crunch match in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have lost another loose forward, though, with Kabamba Floors out for an extended period with knee damage. This should be countered to some extent by the anticipated ban to Sharsk flank Jean Deysel. Deysel faces a disciplinary hearing this afternoon after a dangerous clear out this weekend; Lions flank Mike Rhodes was this morning given a 6-week suspension for a similar incident.

  • This is such a shame..

I hope we get to see quite a bit from him in the Currie Cup..

That puts him in the frame only towards the middle part of the Currie Cup..

  • Can it be confirmed that he went into Saturday’s game with a injury? His elbow was heavily strapped when he went on the field.

  • @Ben (Comment 3) :

I dont think Plum would have done that.. Why have a player play 5 minutes every game, and then when he is injured start with him. I doubt that very much!

Ruan Pienaar left the Sharks for a reason, lets forget about who we can buy and just go with what we have..

Reinach and Cronje will be fine..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 10) : Yip I understand your view point fully and let’s be honest Plum’s player management hasn’t really been good at all.

Darren Scott actually asked Conrad during the game if he was carrying the injury into the game but I couldn’t fully hear what Hoffman replied. Anyone?

  • @Ben (Comment 20) : and if I remember correctly when the injury occured he seemed to know exactly what it was. Maybe it was a case of getting injured at captains run and since it was his first start tried to cover it up. Just speculation. .

  • It is a sad blow that Hoffman is out as i thought he added some pace into the Sharks attack that McCloed has lacked this year for some reason. Reinach is much quicker than Cronje and as far as i know he was the Sharks XV scrumhalf in the last game, therefore he should be picked. We have to back our structures and if Reinach was the 1st choice scrumhalf for the Sharks XV then he must be the natural replacement. If not then we are not backing the Sharks XV coaches.

  • Cronje was regularly preferred to Reinach in the Vodacom Cup. Reinach started the quarter final cos Cronje was injured.

So Plum mentioning Cronje is in line with what the Sharks XV coaches were thinking..

  • Hi guys. This is bad news about Hoffman, really liked what I saw from him in those few minutes he was on. But it seemed that the bench duty shocked McCloed into life again. Why do Plum and then want to look into using Tian Meyer, we need to start trusting and developing our own players that’s waiting in the wings.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 28) : But Meyer is from our structures. Plum and co seem to rate him high. His just playing for the Puma’s to get better exposure. His the only scrumhalf I have seen who plays centre as well. Except for Ruan. But I can’t recall him playing centre.

  • @Mocho (Comment 29) : Ok didn’t know that. But what must Cronje and Reinach be thinking. I’m sure it has to lead to them doubting their abilities when some one leapfrogs them in the pecking order from outside the immediate team structures

  • Rob sorry to correct you but the late Jaco Reinach was a 400m sprinter not hurdler, who if my mind serves me correct still holds the SA record of 45,01 which he set sometime in 1986 in Bloem..He was also a springbok wing..
