Keep the champagne… Just win, please!

I’m nervous. The last time I wrote a preview for a match it backfired on me big-time when the Bulls ground the Sharks face-first into the hallowed turf of King’s Park. That’s why I steered clear of comment on the Waratahs match last week. But try as I might I can’t avoid the issue of the upcoming match against the Cheetahs…

We all know that the next three matches are critical for our darling Sharks. And we all know that at their best, Durban’s finest can outwit, outsmart and damned-well outplay all comers. But the fact remains that the Sharks are not at their best at the moment. In fact, their best seems to have eluded them for the most part this season, with only fleeting glimpses of it here and there letting onlookers know what the Sharks are really capable of.

These hints of greatness, the few measured moments of supremacy, have served as a reminder of what we achieved last year in the Currie Cup, but also as a litmus test of how far short we are falling thus far this season. And how much we need to get our game on if we really want to outshine and outdo our SupeRugby competition.

Which is why I am nervous. Because I am not entirely convinced that the Sharks currently have what it takes to tap into their much-needed A Game over the next three weekends.

Now before you all start falling off your chairs and choking on your chips, I have not forsaken my positive approach to Shark-ness and become a quivering wreck of a thing ready to flee a sinking ship at the first sign of a rat wearing a life-preserver… Far from it. But I must confess to having hoped that there would be significant improvement on a game-by-game basis as the SupeRugby season wore on. Instead there have been times when I have had to be physically restrained from hurling my television out of the lounge window in dismay at the Sharks’ lacklustre attempts at what we love to call “champagne” rugby.

So. This weekend I am not looking for bubbly rugger. I am not hoping for blindingly brilliant displays of awesomeness and might. I don’t want our front row to trample the bones of the Cheetahs’ pack to dust. I am not interested in a try-scoring fest par excellence from our darling boys in the backline. Nor do I expect SuperPat to kick 100% (even though I know he’ll do his damndest to do it anyway!)

No. This weekend I just want a win. In any way possible. Be it ugly, be it brutal or be it ground out slowly over the full 80 minutes… I just want the Sharks to get four points on the log.

I’m not even asking for a bonus point, even though one would come in terribly handy at this stage. I merely want our score to be bigger than the Cheetahs’ when the final whistle goes. Be it by one point only. That’s all. Victory. Come what may.

We’ve gotten this far in the competition by grinding out wins over opposition we would trounce in a heartbeat if we were playing at 100% capacity. So by the law of averages it should be possible for us to hang on to our position on the log by continuing to do so. N’est pas?

Of course, there is the possibility that my nervousness is ill-founded, and that the Sharks have been hustling their way to the play-offs! And believe me no-one would be more happy at being hustled than little old moi! But if this is the case, then could I please put out an APB for that aforementioned A Game because if there was ever a time to stop the hustling and put a permanent smile back on Shaz’s face then it’s now, boys, NOW!

So go you Black and White biscuits. So I can dunk you in the steaming hot coffee of superlative victory!

  • i agree. it is a bit nerve wrecking watching the Sharks now as when looking at them playing I really do not have confidence that they will take the game but then one keeps thinking – these are our CC champs.

  • If a bogey side was a bogey side when they were playing crap rugby, would they still be a bogey side when they are playing decent rugby?

  • @Letgo (Comment 8) : Now THAT’s a good question! Theoretically not, I suppose, and yet, if they were a bogey side, it would suggest that they had a reputation for slaying the opposition when least expected to do so, which would mean that the opposition was inclined to play crap rugby against them… OR…
They are not a bogey side but hustlers as well… OR… They are so bogey they need a good snot-klap… (pardon the pun!) OR… I dunno… makes my brain hurt!

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 9) : Exactly! Hopefully they were a bogey side because they beat opposition when least expected. I think the Cheetahs has a good chance of beating the Sharks, thus expected! Maybe on Saturday we could become a bogey side for the Cheetahs.
